Identifying Synonymous Terms In Preparation For Technology Mining, Cherie C. Trumbach Dec 2007

Identifying Synonymous Terms In Preparation For Technology Mining, Cherie C. Trumbach

Management Faculty Publications

In this research, the development of a `concept-clumping algorithm' designed to improve the clustering of technical concepts is demonstrated . The algorithm developed first identifies a list of technically relevant noun phrases from a cleaned extracted list and then applies a rule-based algorithm for identifying synonymous terms based on shared words in each term. An assessment of the algorithm found that the algorithm has an 89—91% precision rate, was successful in moving technically important terms higher in the term frequency list, and improved the technical specificity of term clusters.

Influence Of Resource Availability On The Foraging Behavior Of Traplining Hummingbirds In Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2007, Michelle Levesque Dec 2007

Influence Of Resource Availability On The Foraging Behavior Of Traplining Hummingbirds In Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2007, Michelle Levesque

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Traplining hummingbirds have been observed to change their foraging behavior in response to a change in resource availability. Generally, trapliners change to territorial behavior when presented with an economically defendable resource. I investigated the degree to which aggressive behavior increases by observing changes in behavior frequency in response to increased resources. I observed that trapliner species showed an increase in aggressive behavior and a decrease in the total frequency of traplining behavior following the introduction of increased resources. My study also supports that traplining hummingbirds could switch their foraging behavior to territoriality when resources become economically defendable.

Atta Cephalotes (Formicidae) As A Reliable Bioassay For Anti-Fungal Compounds In Plants Of Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2007, Annie Chisholm

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Studies have shown Atta cephalotes (Formicidae) to be selective in choosing host plants, avoiding those that contain nonpolar secondary compounds harmful to their mutualistic fungus (Howard 1988). Due to this selectivity, several studies have found A. cephalotes to be a reliable bioassay tool for detecting antifungal properties of plants (Ozaki 1993; Taylor 1995). This experiment tests the acceptability of A. cephalotes towards six Costa Rican plants with known anti-fungal compounds. It was hypothesized that A. cephalotes would selectively avoid extracts of these plants. The frequency of removal of oat flakes dipped in the anti-fungal and control treatments was measured. A. …

Differences In Bark Beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Community Composition Within Cecropia Obtusifolia (Cecropiaceae) Petioles In Two Habitats In Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2007, Amy Strauss Dec 2007

Differences In Bark Beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Community Composition Within Cecropia Obtusifolia (Cecropiaceae) Petioles In Two Habitats In Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2007, Amy Strauss

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Cecropia obtusifolia trees shed leaves daily throughout the year, regularly dropping large, woody leaf petioles. These petioles serve as the perfect habitat for Scolytine bark beetles, which burrow in, lay their eggs, and feed on the moist, fibrous pith of the petiole (Wood 1983). Cecropia spp. are known to thrive in fragmented, edge habitats altered by human land use transformation (Bello et al 1996) but success rates of associated fauna, including Azteca spp. ants, scale insects and Scolytine beetles, are less understood. This study examined the bark beetle community composition, morphospecies richness, and abundance inside C. obtusifolia petioles. It also …

Behavioral Response Of Wrens (Troglodytidae) To Familiar And Unfamiliar Predator Playbacks, December 2007, Carl D. Johnson Dec 2007

Behavioral Response Of Wrens (Troglodytidae) To Familiar And Unfamiliar Predator Playbacks, December 2007, Carl D. Johnson

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Predator-prey interactions are important for determining fitness, especially including a prey species’ ability to distinguish a predator from a non-predator. In this study, I investigated how three wren species: the Plain Wren (Thryothorus modestus), the House Wren (Troglodytes musculus) and the Rufus-and-white Wren (Thryothorus rutilus) respond to familiar and unfamiliar predatory calls. The test subjects responded with higher warning call frequency to the predatory calls than the control (p<0.05). Wrens responded to the two predatory birds with similar call frequency, though there were varied responses in approach behavior. The fact that wrens respond to unknown predators similarly to known predators implies that a combination of both genetic inheritance and learning affects predatory birdcall recognition in wrens.

Synthesis, Study Of Self-Assembly, And Trivalent Lanthanide Metal Ion Recognition Characteristics Of Amphiphilic Acylpyrazolones And Amphiphilic Acylisoxazolones, Venkat Reddy Guduru Dec 2007

Synthesis, Study Of Self-Assembly, And Trivalent Lanthanide Metal Ion Recognition Characteristics Of Amphiphilic Acylpyrazolones And Amphiphilic Acylisoxazolones, Venkat Reddy Guduru

Dissertations

This research project focused on the separation of trivalent lanthanide metal ions by HPLC using amphiphilic acylpyrazolones and amphiphilic acylisoxazolones. The central hypothesis of our research project is that the nanoscale self-assembly nature of amphiphilic ligands (chelating lingads) can influence their metal ion recognition and separation. To test the central hypothesis, we have synthesized a family of novel amphiphilic ligands and employed them as model systems for the separation of trivalent lanthanide metal ions. Several novel intermediates such as 4-acylated. N -acylated, O -acylated pyrazolones and isoxazolones, have been efficiently synthesized and fully characterized.*

The trivalent lanthanide metal ion recognition …

Clostridium Perfringens Infections In Baby Calves, Russ Daly, Lori Rotert Dec 2007

Clostridium Perfringens Infections In Baby Calves, Russ Daly, Lori Rotert

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Illnesses and death losses in baby calves are significant problems for producers raising calves in beef or dairy operations. Several of these issues, especially sudden deaths and certain enteric (intestinal) conditions, are potential effects of infections due to Clostridium perfringens. Clostridium perfringens are Gram-positive, spore-forming, anaerobic bacteria that are very commonly found in many environments, including soil, water, poorly preserved feeds, contaminated or improperly thawed colostrum or milk, calf-housing environments, and the normal bovine intestinal tract. In small amounts, these bacteria are generally harmless in the intestine, but under the right conditions they may grow and proliferate, resulting in enterotoxemia, …

Leadership For Today Managing Conflict Within Groups, Karla Trautman Dec 2007

Leadership For Today Managing Conflict Within Groups, Karla Trautman

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

The human relationship is a complex and dynamic interaction. As living creatures, we need and crave the opportunity to interact with other humans by speaking, listening, and spending time with them. Most of this interaction tends to be mutual and cordial. Yet, at times, the interaction can be laced with tension and discord. If left alone, the tension can lead to conflict that may damage the relationship or even become volatile.

A Mixed Methods Analysis Of The Concept Of Female Sexual Health, Laura C. Ford Dec 2007

A Mixed Methods Analysis Of The Concept Of Female Sexual Health, Laura C. Ford

Dissertations

The theoretical concept of health includes the ability to function physiologically, perceive a state of wellness, participate in social relationships, and be disease-free. Currently, the medical field approaches sexuality from a disease prevention and treatment perspective. Female sexual health must be understood holistically (i.e., emotionally, sociologically, and physiologically) for healthcare providers to help their patients optimize their sexual health; however, little research has been conducted from a holistic perspective. This study's purpose was to begin an exploration of the meaning of female sexual health.

This study utilized focus groups and a survey to explore the concept female sexual health as …

Describing Change In Visitors And Visits To The “Bob”, William T. Borrie, Stephen Mccool

Society and Conservation Faculty Publications

Understanding wilderness use and users is essential to wilderness management. However, there have only been a limited number of studies specifically designed to detect changes in use and user characteristics across time. Recreation use of the U.S. National Wilderness Preservation System (NWPS) has increased since its creation in 1964, along with many other changes in influences on society’s relationship with wilderness. This article describes a series of visitor trend studies at the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex in Montana, and identifies some of the challenges encountered in estimating long-term use and user trends.

Proposing Measures For Assessing Systems Thinking Interventions, Megan Aline Hopper

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This paper presents an analysis of systems thinking interventions in educational settings. Although these interventions have been implemented in K-12 classrooms since the mid 1980s, there is still no clear definition of systems thinking or identification of the best method to test the effectiveness of interventions or methods for teaching systems thinking The goal of this paper is to answer the question: how do we assess the effectiveness of systems thinking interventions in education? In order to answer this question, I had to address the following sub questions: (1) what is systems thinking, (2) what systems thinking interventions are being …

The interactions between customers and service organizations, known as service encounters, have generally been between front-liner and consumers. Gradually however, these encounters are changing with the introduction of self-service facilities that are quickly replacing service staff. The use of self-service technology has seen an incredible amount of growth globally over the last few years. Self-service technologies are currently being used in more diverse ways for new services than once thought possible. The expenditure on self-service kiosks is expected to rise by 88% and the dollar value of transactions taking place through self-service technology should exceed 1.3 trillion by 2007 (Avery, …

Globalization is fast becoming the new trend of the hospitality industry. It remains as a highly complex and controversial concept that is not a new phenomenon. Researchers have suggested that globalization is likely an irreversible forceful process that will change the face of businesses (Mrak, 2000). In the recent Global Relocation Trends Survey conducted annually by GMAC Global Relocation Services (2007), it was reported that more than two-thirds (69%) of the multinational corporations surveyed reported an increase to the number of international assignments. This is the highest percentage that was ever reported, with more companies (65%) indicating their intent in …
