Collaborative Routing Algorithm For Wireless Sensor Network Longevity, Shishir Bashyal, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy Dec 2007

Collaborative Routing Algorithm For Wireless Sensor Network Longevity, Shishir Bashyal, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study proposes a new parameter for evaluating longevity of wireless sensor networks after showing that the existing parameters do not properly evaluate the performance of algorithms in increasing longevity. This study also proposes an ant inspired Collaborative Routing Algorithm for Wireless Sensor Network Longevity (CRAWL) that has scalability and adaptability features required in most wireless sensor networks. Using the proposed longevity metrics and implementing the algorithm in simulations, it is shown that CRAWL is much more adaptive to non-uniform distribution of available energy in sensor networks. The performance of CRAWL is compared to that of a non-collaborative algorithm. Both …

L’Écriture Tumulaire : Témoignage Sur La Mort, Pour La Vie, Philippe Basabosa

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The article proves how the testimony narrative, in writing death and genocide-related atrocities, attempts to restore human dignity to the victims. The narrative space that becomes in that way a burial place and a funeral monument plays also the role of the ''redemption'' of history in order to secure the future. The narratives that the article analyzes constitute at the same time a hymn to life. By creating themselves other destinies, other reasons for life, the survivor and witness authors succeed in overcoming the world-weariness that threatens every survivor of the Itsembabwoko slaughter.

Transportation Management Associations: A Reappraisal, Erik Ferguson Dec 2007

Transportation Management Associations: A Reappraisal, Erik Ferguson

Journal of Public Transportation

This article reviews the results of eight national transportation management association (TMA) surveys conducted between 1989 and 2003 using meta-analytical techniques. TMAs became popular as vehicles for dealing with traffic congestion and related problems in the late 1980s. Despite their initial popularity, however, many TMAs struggled in the 1990s, and by 2002 almost half of all TMAs formed in previous years had disappeared. Median TMA annual budgets bottomed out in 1991, but have since rebounded to a new high in 2003. TMAs today are more diverse in terms of organizational structure, offer a wider variety of products and services, and …

Diagnostic Evaluation Of Public Transportation Mode Choice In Addis Ababa, Mintesnot Gebeyehu, Shin-Ei Takano Dec 2007

Diagnostic Evaluation Of Public Transportation Mode Choice In Addis Ababa, Mintesnot Gebeyehu, Shin-Ei Takano

Journal of Public Transportation

The major modes of public transportation in the city of Addis Ababa are buses and taxis. There is no rail transit within the city. The existing public transportation is of a low quality because of the limited number of buses and taxis, poor management, and bad behavior of drivers. Despite these prevailing problems, efforts to make an empirical study of the city’s urban transportation are insignificant. This research attempts to develop an ordered logit model to examine citizens’ perceptions of the bus condition, as a determining factor for their choice of bus transportation, and to develop a binary logit model …

Documented Impact Of Transportation Demand Management Programs Through The Case Study Method, Sara J. Hendricks, Nevine Labib Georggi Dec 2007

Documented Impact Of Transportation Demand Management Programs Through The Case Study Method, Sara J. Hendricks, Nevine Labib Georggi

Journal of Public Transportation

What are the internal and external conditions of a work site that influence the success of its commuter choice program, aside from the trip-reducing services and incentives themselves? This article shares the results of two studies that used a more rigorous case study method for discerning the relative influence of conditions within and outside of the control of a work site. It also discusses the useful application and elements of the case study method as well as the location for finding properly documented case studies that describe successful programs. Recommendations are developed for work sites to implement commuter choice programs …

Employer Perceptions And Implementation Of Commute Alternatives Strategies, Kai Zuehlke, Randall Guensler Dec 2007

Employer Perceptions And Implementation Of Commute Alternatives Strategies, Kai Zuehlke, Randall Guensler

Journal of Public Transportation

Employer-based trip reduction (EBTR) strategies are the transportation demand management elements of commute options programs that target commute travel. This article reports the results of two surveys conducted in the Atlanta metropolitan area of implementation of EBTR strategies and employer perceptions of associated costs and benefits. On average, less than a quarter of the employers surveyed utilized EBTR strategies. Survey results indicate that employers commonly perceive that EBTR strategies provide minimal benefits for the company, that employers believe their employees lack interest in such measures, and that upper management does not provide support. Employers regard the distance between work location …

Extremism And Social Learning, Cass R. Sunstein, Edward L. Glaeser Dec 2007

Extremism And Social Learning, Cass R. Sunstein, Edward L. Glaeser

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

When members of deliberating groups speak with one another, their predeliberation tendencies often become exacerbated as their views become more extreme. The resulting phenomenon—group polarization—has been observed in many settings, and it bears on the actions of juries, administrative tribunals, corporate boards, and other institutions. Polarization can result from rational Bayesian updating by group members, but in many contexts, this rational interpretation of polarization seems implausible. We argue that people are better seen as Credulous Bayesians, who insufficiently adjust for idiosyncratic features of particular environments and put excessive weight on the statements of others where there are 1) common sources …

Gender, Citizenship, And Dress In Modernizing Japan, Barbara Molony Dec 2007

Gender, Citizenship, And Dress In Modernizing Japan, Barbara Molony

History

Between the 1870s and 1945, dress was one of the signifiers ofJapan's transition from being objectified as an "Oriental" country subordinate to the West to playing a dominant role as the bearer of "universal" (Western) modernity to East Asia. 1 In the late nineteenth century, Western dress indicated a yearning for international respect for Japan's modernity; by the early twentieth century, when Japan had largely achieved diplomatic equality with the West and colonial dominion over parts of Asia, Western dress had come to be taken for granted by "modern" Japanese men. In some cases, colonial subjects could be distinguished by …

Creating Micro- And Nanostructures On Tubular And Spherical Surfaces, O. Lima, L. Tan, A. Goel, Lmehrdad Negahban, Z. Li Dec 2007

Creating Micro- And Nanostructures On Tubular And Spherical Surfaces, O. Lima, L. Tan, A. Goel, Lmehrdad Negahban, Z. Li

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

The authors developed a new technique to create micro- and nanometer scale structures on curved free-standing objects by combining embossing/imprinting lithography approaches with mechanical loadings on elastic films. Embossing/imprinting generates small structures and mechanical loading determines shape or geometry of the final object. As a result, a portion of the tubes with a radius between 0.5 and 3.5 mm and a portion of the spheres with a radius between 2.4 and 7.0 mm were fabricated with grating line features (period of 700 nm) and microlens array features (lens radius of 2.5 µm) atop, respectively. It was found that both static …
