The Traveling Quilter: An Exploration Of The Influences On Travel Behavior, Christine Drais Dec 2007

The Traveling Quilter: An Exploration Of The Influences On Travel Behavior, Christine Drais

All Theses

ABSTRACT

Quilters have been traveling to regional, national, and international symposia since the beginning of the quilt revival in the 1970's (Bonesteel Films, (Producer), 2005, The Great American Quilt Revival, UNC-TV). These events have attracted large crowds, mostly women, yet there is little data about their travel behavior (L. Brodsky, Country Heritage Tours, personal conversation October 29, 2007). In response to the lack of information on quilting travel, this research was undertaken to determine if quilting experience, skill level and level of serious leisure predict quilting travel behavior.
This thesis examines experience use history in quilting (i.e., number of years …

Deep Mixing Technology For Mitigation Of Swell-Shrink Behavior Of Expansive Soils Of Moderate To Deep Active Depths, Raja Sekhar Madhyannapu Dec 2007

Deep Mixing Technology For Mitigation Of Swell-Shrink Behavior Of Expansive Soils Of Moderate To Deep Active Depths, Raja Sekhar Madhyannapu

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Expansive soils are well known for their cyclic shrink-swell behavior due to seasonal related moisture changes. These cyclic movements of expansive soils are due to physico-chemical changes at particle level that are dependent on mineralogical composition of these soils. The subsoil depths susceptible to moisture changes are known as active zones and based on previous studies vary from shallow to deep depths. Movements from these active depths reflect to the surface and cause considerable damages to overlying infrastructures. These damages are slow and time dependent as the in situ moisture fluctuations are slow and continue with time. Since the current …

Reproductive Success Of Southeastern American Kestrels (Falco Sparverius Paulus) Nesting In 230kv Transmission Towers And Alternative Nest Structures In South-Central Georgia, Hope Alyce Beasley

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This research involved a survey of the distribution and reproductive biology of the threatened southeastern subspecies of the American Kestrel (Falco sparverius paulus). Numbers of Southeastern American Kestrels are estimated to have declined by more than 80% over the last fifty years in the southeastern United States. In Georgia, populations have nearly disappeared below the Fall Line. The paucity of adequate nest sites is the major factor contributing to the decline of this obligate secondary cavity nester. The largest breeding population of this subspecies in Georgia is located in the south-central part of the state in the hollow cross-arms of …

Fiscal Year 2007 Fhwa-536 Report For The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Steven Douglas Kreis Dec 2007

Fiscal Year 2007 Fhwa-536 Report For The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Steven Douglas Kreis

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) requires state transportation agencies to submit a biennial report on local highway finances. The purpose of these reports is to provide FHWA with the data it needs to capture the financing of highway activities at the local level. Based on this information, it can identify trends in revenue, expenditures, investments, and program development, and in turn make decisions about future investments. The report, FHWA-536, asks agencies to report on four areas of local highway finance: 1) disposition of highway-user revenues; 2) revenues used for roads and streets identified by source and funding type; 3) road …

Dangers Of Credulity: Mary Robinson And The Trope Of Victimization, Jeffrey Paul Kozee Dec 2007

Dangers Of Credulity: Mary Robinson And The Trope Of Victimization, Jeffrey Paul Kozee

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

A prodigious professional poet admired by Samuel Taylor Coleridge; a courtesan idealized for her unparalleled beauty; a famed actress and mistress to royalty known to live beyond her means in an era of exploding print culture: Mary Robinson found herself portrayed incongruously in motley of mediums. While the leading portrait artists of the day, Thomas Gainsborough, George Romney, and Sir Joshua Reynolds, were painting dazzling portraits of Mrs. Robinson, she found herself lampooned in the satirical cartoons of James Gillray and Thomas Rowlandson. The multifarious representations of Mary Robinson seem an apt commentary on her tumultuous life. Intriguing in their …

Function-Technology-Based Product Platform Formation, Rupesh Kumar, Venkat Allada Dec 2007

Function-Technology-Based Product Platform Formation, Rupesh Kumar, Venkat Allada

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Product platforms have been effectively used by many successful companies for product family design. Technological advancements and changes in customer needs pose problems for robustly designing product platforms over a given planning horizon. to date, most product platform formation approaches are directed by structural (subassemblies and components) considerations and are seldom undertaken at the conceptual design stage. We argue that product platform design should commence at the conceptual design stage rather than the detailed design stage. It is noteworthy that physical structures are the end results of designs already frozen at higher level of functional abstraction. Hence, tackling the platform …

A Closed Form Solution For Multiple-Input Spike Based Adaptive Filters, Il Park, António R.C. Paiva, José C. Príncipe, John G. Harris Dec 2007

A Closed Form Solution For Multiple-Input Spike Based Adaptive Filters, Il Park, António R.C. Paiva, José C. Príncipe, John G. Harris

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Neurons are point process systems, in the sense that the inputs and output which are spike trains can be treated as point processes. System identification of a point process system has been studied mostly with single input. However, multiple input is required in many applications such as liquid state machines or neural prosthetics. We propose a simple multiple-input spike based adaptive filter which is based on an integrate-and-fire neuron model. The optimal closed solution is derived, and the performance is analyzed with respect to noise in various parameters and measurement. ©2007 IEEE.

Neural-Network-Based Intelligent Control For Improving Dynamic Performance Of Facts Devices, Wei Qiao, Ronald G. Harley, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Flexible ac transmission system (FACTS) devices are widely recognized as powerful controllers to improve the dynamic performance and stability of power systems. the standard FACTS controllers are linear controllers designed around a specific operating point from a linearized system model with fixed parameters. However, at other operating points their performance degrades. Neural-network-Based nonlinear intelligent control offers an attractive approach to overcome the drawbacks of the linear controllers. This paper presents two different neural-network-Based intelligent control architectures, i.e., indirect adaptive NeuroControl and adaptive critic design based optimal NeuroControl, for designing the external control of an SSSC FACTS device. Simulation studies are …

Novel And Efficient Download Test For Two Path Echo Canceller, Mohammad Asif Iqbal, Steven L. Grant Dec 2007

Novel And Efficient Download Test For Two Path Echo Canceller, Mohammad Asif Iqbal, Steven L. Grant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The two-path echo cancellation technique is a popular method for handling the double-talk problem in acoustic and line echo cancellation applications. the method uses two filters. a so-called background adaptive filter adapts its coefficients to predict echo all or most of the time regardless of signal activity on the near end. a second foreground filter, that also predicts the echo, receives it coefficients from the background filter, but only when the background is performing better than the foreground. Only the foreground residual echo is sent to the far-end. so any background divergence due to double-talk is not observed by the …
