The Relationship Among Spirituality, Self-Efficacy, And Quality Of Life In Adults With Sickle Cell Disease, Maxine A. Adegbola Dec 2007

The Relationship Among Spirituality, Self-Efficacy, And Quality Of Life In Adults With Sickle Cell Disease, Maxine A. Adegbola

Nursing Dissertations - Archive

For the individual with sickle cell disease (SCD), the lifespan is increasing but adults report decreased quality of life (QOL), low self-efficacy, and ineffective coping skills. The care of adult patients with SCD requires a complex multidisciplinary team approach with focus not only on physiological, psychological, and social needs, but also on spiritual needs. Quality of life, spirituality, and self-efficacy have been sparsely and separately studied in individuals with SCD. These three constructs have never been combined in one study in the adult SCD population. Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the relationships among spirituality, …

Ring Closing Enyne Metathesis Of Imidazole Derivatives And Subsequent Diels-Alder Reaction, E. Vindana Ekanayake Dec 2007

Ring Closing Enyne Metathesis Of Imidazole Derivatives And Subsequent Diels-Alder Reaction, E. Vindana Ekanayake

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses - Archive

The work presented in this thesis describes the development of new synthetic routes to elaborate simple imidazole derivatives into complex imidazole molecules by the application of different sequential transformations. The first transformation considered is the ring closing enyne metathesis (RCEYM) of imidazoles. To carry out this reaction various allyl and propargyl derivatives of imidazole have been synthesized. These enyne substrates have been varied by changing the positions on the imidazole, as well as changing the protecting groups. All substrates contain trimethysilyl-protected propargyl derivative as the "yne" moiety. After the successful preparation of different enyne substrates, they were subjected to the …

On Progenitively Koszul Commutative Rings, Paul Russell Stern Dec 2007

On Progenitively Koszul Commutative Rings, Paul Russell Stern

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive

This paper introduces and identifies classes of progenitively Koszul rings. A progenitively Koszul ring is a commutative ring that admits a Koszul complex A=K(R) that is formal, and such that the homology algebra H(A) generated by A is a Koszul algebra. Local complete intersections, which yield exterior algebras (an example of a Koszul algebra) for their homology algebras, serve as a prototype. It is shown that the local complete intersections occupy only a small portion of the class of progenitively Koszul rings. The material in Chapter 1 will cover basic definitions and facts regarding free resolutions differential graded algebras, homology, …

Multiply Charged Cationic Pairing Agents For Trace Analysis Of Anionic Species By Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry, Jeffrey William Remsburg Dec 2007

Multiply Charged Cationic Pairing Agents For Trace Analysis Of Anionic Species By Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry, Jeffrey William Remsburg

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses - Archive

Electrospray ionization is one of the most broadly useful and successful approaches for coupling high performance liquid chromatography to mass spectrometry. Most of the research in electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) has been limited to the positive ion mode, where lower detection limits are generally achieved, due several advantages over the more problematic negative ion mode. However, if one wishes to study anionic species, the negative ion mode traditionally had to be employed, and the problems associated with the negative ion mode had to be tolerated or ameliorated as much as possible Recently, novel work has been done to take …

A Sticky Situation: Functional Responses Of Mast Cells To Acidic Ph, Nicole Conaway Grose Dec 2007

A Sticky Situation: Functional Responses Of Mast Cells To Acidic Ph, Nicole Conaway Grose

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Precise regulation of extracellular pH is critical for proper function of many cellular activities. Minor fluctuations in pH can have profound effects on ion transport, receptor function, and cellular secretions. This work examines the impact of acidic pH, universal at sites of inflammation, on the activation status of mast cells. The mast cell line HMC-1 was used to explore activation by acidic pH. Activation of HMC-1 cells was characterized in cell adhesion, secretion of cytokines, and changes in cell morphology. HMC-1 adhesion to two substrates, collagen and laminin was measured at 0, 1 hr, 2 hrs, 4 hrs, and 6 …

Efficacy Of A Series Of Organotin Polymers As Anticancer And Antiviral Drugs, Kimberly Rae Shahi Dec 2007

Efficacy Of A Series Of Organotin Polymers As Anticancer And Antiviral Drugs, Kimberly Rae Shahi

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Anticancer drugs have been shown to have antiviral abilities as well. The two types of diseases are similar in that they hold the cell in a continued growth phase. Therefore, if a drug has anticancer activity, it could have antiviral activity as well. I was interested in drugs that could inhibit DNA replication, since both cancer cells and cells infected with a DNA virus have increased DNA replication. Organotins are known to have anticancer activity and are thought to inhibit DNA replication. In this study, four cancer cell lines (from the NCI 60) and two DNA viruses, HSV-1 and vaccinia, …

An Examination Of United Methodist Clergy, Jennifer R. Graham Dec 2007

An Examination Of United Methodist Clergy, Jennifer R. Graham

Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive

Research on occupational sex segregation and the gender wage gap has consistently shown differences between male and female workers with regards to both position and salary with males segregated in higher positions within companies and accruing higher salaries than females even in similar positions. Two primary explanations have emerged to explain these differences. Supply-side explanations, such as those put forth by economists, assume that the desires of male and female workers are different thus creating women’s disadvantaged work positions. Demand-side explanations, such as those examined in queuing theory, postulate that those in charge of hiring are biased towards male workers …

Niche Partitioning Between Eisenia Foetida (Lumbricidae) And Native Earthworms In Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2007, Christine Askham Dec 2007

Niche Partitioning Between Eisenia Foetida (Lumbricidae) And Native Earthworms In Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2007, Christine Askham

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

With an increased susceptibility to invasive species due to deforestation, exotic species in tropical rainforests are quickly gaining potential to alter these already disappearing ecosystems. This study examined whether the exotic earthworm Eisenia foetida (Lumbricidae) has the potential to become an invasive species. Niche preference for level of organic soil content, level of soil texture, and humidity level was tested between native and exotic species in Monteverde, Puntarenas, Costa Rica. There was a significant difference for organic soil content level between native earthworms and E. foetida. This significant difference was present both when the exotics and natives were tested alone …

Evidence Of Subsocial Behavior Through Analysis Of Prey Capture And Feeding In A New Species Of Anelosimus (Araneae: Theridiidae), December 2007, Aaron Mitchell-Dick Dec 2007

Evidence Of Subsocial Behavior Through Analysis Of Prey Capture And Feeding In A New Species Of Anelosimus (Araneae: Theridiidae), December 2007, Aaron Mitchell-Dick

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Sociality is a little studied, little occurring, and unique trait in spider biology. Recently, in the genus Anelosimus, where sociality has originated eight or nine times, research has shown that more quasisocial species exist at low elevations and almost all subsocial species at higher elevations. The purpose of this study was to determine the sociality of a new species of Anelosimus, and add to the knowledge base of social Anelosimus spiders. Analysis of prey capture and feeding has provided evidence for a subsocial classification. In 12 webs of a female and her offspring, juveniles coordinated efforts to capture prey. Almost …

Pollen Diversity On Male Hylonycteris Underwoodi (Glossophaginae), December 2007, Julia Hoeh

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Nectivorous bats play important roles in pollination systems in the tropics, by transferring pollen carried on their bodies between the plants that they visit for nectar. The purpose of this study was to evaluate diversity indices of pollen loads found on individuals of Hylonycteris underwoodi (Glossophaginae). It was conducted in the Selvatura Adventure Park in Monteverde, Costa Rica during the rainy season, and related pollen load diversity to aspect ratio, wing tip index, and mass of individuals (N = 30 males). The pollen load on individuals had low richness (2.20 ± 0.81), diversity (0.09 ± 0.16), and evenness (0.09 ± …

Relationship Between Floral Advertisement And Pollinia Removal In Oerstedella Exasperata (Orchidaceae), December 2007, Mary Snayd Dec 2007

Relationship Between Floral Advertisement And Pollinia Removal In Oerstedella Exasperata (Orchidaceae), December 2007, Mary Snayd

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The purpose of this study was to examine how the floral displays and morphology of Oerstedella exasperata affect reproductive success. This species of orchid is typified by extreme variability in both inflorescence and floral characteristics. In particular there is a wide distribution regarding the degree of symmetry observed in the labellum. The degrees of symmetry are characterized by variations within the fringe symmetry and bilateral symmetry. Furthermore, the surface area of the labellum varies greatly within a population. These remarkably diverse phenotypic morphologies and the summation of the floral traits can enhance or reduce the reproductive success of particular species. …

Prey Naiveté: Evolutionary And Ecological Implications, Jonathan G. Cox Dec 2007

Prey Naiveté: Evolutionary And Ecological Implications, Jonathan G. Cox

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite its ecological importance, the concept of prey naivete has become a biological truism that receives little study. I explored the evolution of naivete and its likely influence on two major ecological patterns: a) the historically greater destructiveness of freshwater predator introductions, and b) the greater strength of aquatic trophic cascades. In a review of the ecological literature, I demonstrate that the conditions for the evolution of naivete (isolation) exist in freshwater habitats at multiple spatial scales. In addition, I show that freshwater prey exhibit naivete which could be responsible for the high impacts of freshwater predator introductions. I then …

This Article surveys administrative law developments in appellate cases from June 1, 2006 through May 31, 2007. Only cases from the Georgia Supreme Court and the Georgia Court of Appeals have been reviewed. As compared to prior years, the number of cases in which administrative law principles played a significant role showed no upward spike. There are many other topics that concern elements of administrative law, but this Article does not address cases containing those specific subject matter topics. There is likely some duplication of cases among the subject matter topics, but only the administrative law elements are emphasized in …

Domestic Relations, Barry B. Mcgough, Gregory R. Miller Dec 2007

Domestic Relations, Barry B. Mcgough, Gregory R. Miller

Mercer Law Review

This survey period saw domestic relations law continue to evolve through new legislation and new case law. The 2006 Georgia legislature made dramatic changes to the child support calculations that took effect in 2007. The 2007 Georgia legislature has turned its focus to child custody issues, including passing laws requiring parenting plans in custody, allowing attorney fee awards, and allowing for direct appeals in child custody cases. The Georgia Supreme Court continued to accept nonfrivolous appeals in divorce cases, and as a result, the appellate courts have been able to give guidance to those interested in domestic relations law.

Local Government Law, R. Perry Sentell Dec 2007

Local Government Law, R. Perry Sentell

Mercer Law Review

This particular [City Commission] meeting had drawn on for quite some time, until it was getting fairly late. We heard someone knocking very rapidly on the plate glass window. As I turned around, I observed an elderly woman, the wife of the Mayor. The Mayor appeared to ignore his wife and continued to conduct the meeting. Not getting any response from her knocking, the wife then walked into the building, grabbed the Mayor by the arm, and scolded him that it was ridiculous that the City Commission was meeting so late at night. "You," she informed the Mayor, "are going …

Insurance, Bradley S. Wolff, Stephen L. Cotter, Stephen M. Schatz Dec 2007

Insurance, Bradley S. Wolff, Stephen L. Cotter, Stephen M. Schatz

Mercer Law Review

The Georgia Supreme Court reviewed, and reversed, two cases featured prominently in last year's Insurance survey article, and it also held a key provision of tort reform preempted by federal law.

The Georgia Supreme Court reversed the decision in Ryder Integrated Logistics, Inc. v. BellSouth Telecommunications, Inc. and held that an agreement to name another as an additional insured could not be used to salvage an invalid indemnification clause in the parties' contract. The legislature amended Official Code of Georgia Annotated ("O.C.G.A.") section 13-8-2 to help avoid this type of litigation in the future.

However, both appellate courts continued …

Workers' Compensation, H. Michael Bagley, Daniel C. Kniffen, Katherine D. Dixon Dec 2007

Workers' Compensation, H. Michael Bagley, Daniel C. Kniffen, Katherine D. Dixon

Mercer Law Review

The year 2007 was relatively quiet for workers' compensation legislation in the Georgia General Assembly. However, there were several statutory modifications of note.

The Georgia Workers' Compensation Act has long excluded "farm laborers" from its coverage. The scope of that exclusion was clarified by including within the term farm laborer "any person employed by an employer in connection with the raising and feeding of and caring for wildlife, as such term is defined in paragraph (77) of [Official Code of Georgia Annotated ("O.C.G.A.")] Section 27-1-2." The Code section referenced defines wildlife as "any vertebrate or invertebrate animal life indigenous to …
