The strength of Hamas in Palestinian elections in early 2006 reshuffled the cards in the game of Middle East politics. Many astonished observers have sought an explanation for this political change. But the election result should not have been so surprising. Hamas has earned a reputation of clean governance and compassion for the poor, unlike the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority. Hamas has had a strong presence in the health sector which helped establish its legitimacy and popularity. This paper reviews bilateral and multilateral aid to Palestinians following the second intifada and argues that not enough was done by the international community …

Small-Scale X-Ray Variability In The Cassiopeia A Supernova Remnant, Daniel J. Patnaude, Robert A. Fesen

Dartmouth Scholarship

A comparison of X-ray observations of the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant taken in 2000, 2002, and 2004 with the Chandra ACIS-S3 reveals the presence of several small-scale features (≤10'') that exhibit significant intensity changes over a 4 yr time frame. Here we report on the variability of six features, four of which show count rate increases from ~10% to over 90%, and two of which show decreases of ~30%-40%. While extracted 1-4.5 keV X-ray spectra do not reveal gross changes in emission-line strengths, spectral fits using nonequilibrium-ionization, metal-rich plasma models indicate increased or decreased electron temperatures for features showing increasing …

An understanding of the material property changes in building materials due to exposure to a fire is needed for accurate damage assessment of a structure. Discussion pertaining to material property changes and the bond between concrete and prestressing steel following elevated temperature exposures is presented. Evaluation of the use of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) as a post-fire analysis tool to determine the maximum temperature exposure of concrete is also included.
Heated concrete cylinders were tested to determine the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity changes of concrete. Heated steel prestressing strands were tested in tension to determine changes in the ultimate …

Detecting damage location and severity in civil engineering structures has become an important research topic in the past several decades. Various non-destructive damage identification methods using dynamic properties from ambient and forced vibration have been developed. Researchers have shown that higher order derivatives of mode shapes of the 2nd and 4th order can be effective in detecting damage in civil engineering structures. Furthermore, these higher order derivatives are sensitive to small changes in global stiffness facilitating the detection of small degrees of damage.

Starvation resistance is an important trait for insect survival. The studies presented in this dissertation investigated starvation resistance using Drosophila melanogaster in terms of genetic correlations, physiological mechanisms and evolutionary trajectory.

/="/"> Whether increase of starvation resistance can also extend lifespan is a controversial issue in D. melanogaster. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping can provide good evidence concerning this controversial problem. A QTL analysis was conducted to test the correlation between starvation resistance and longevity using a set of recombination inbred lines (RILs) from a natural population of D. melanogaster. I have been asked to focus my testimony on litigation and how it contributes to oversight of jails and prisons, in particular to incentivizing appropriate prison and jail supervisory practices and policies that minimize sexual misconduct and sexual violence behind bars. Litigation is an accountability mechanism operative in many spheres, of course, but whereas in most other areas of governmental activity, other such mechanisms have pride of place, we have as a polity largely failed to implement any other effective regulatory system to govern our burgeoning incarcerative apparatus. Phonemic awareness is the foundation for a child's literacy development. God's initial interation with man after creation, through the spoken word, bestows authority on oral language. Manipulation of language begins in infancy and continues throughout one's life. Teachers need to understand what phonemic awareness entails in order to develop and assess a child's development in this area.
