This thesis is a cross-relational enquiry into the nature of ritual as the subject of arts-based research. It can be described as ritual-led; or as an artist's manifestation of ritual. The core of the submission consists in an exhibition, comprising 30 pieces of framed, wall-hung artwork; 3 artist's books; some small-scale sculptural work and a documentary film. The research is concerned with parallel, related disciplines and modes of working: visual art, music, general ritual studies, pedagogy and the practice of Buddhist meditation and ritual. Perhaps more than any other American psychologist and philosopher, William James (1842-1910) was intimately familiar with contemporary European thought and debate, including the discussion of Erklären and Verstehen advanced by Wilhelm Dilthey (1833-1911) and others around the turn of the twentieth century. Even before this discussion was initiated, James had been dealing with related issues, pondering alternative solutions, and formulating his own original views on human understanding. These views coalesced in a distinctive approach to cognition. Fundamental to this approach was a belief in possibility and probability as innate features of the physical as well as mental manifestations of the …

Oscar Wilde's short collection of fairy tales A House of Pomegranates (1891), often considered a minor work, is analyzed textually in conjunction with its book design, by Charles Ricketts and Charles H. Shannon, which accompanied it in the first edition. A House of Pomegranates was the first book Charles Ricketts designed for Wilde, and Wilde uses Ricketts's designs almost exclusively from that point. Despite this, the designs for A House of Pomegranates have not yet been studied at any great length. This thesis is about the developments in aristocratic divorce in Georgian England. I specify aristocratic, because at this time they were the only individuals who had the financial means to obtain a divorce by Act of Parliament. Officially, no divorce law existed in England until 1857. I have analyzed three divorce cases for adultery from the 1770's and researched how aspects of gender and class impacted the development of the process of divorce. I look at issues of power, shame, and the distinctions between the public and private spheres for men and women. I also investigate the impact of the …

These stories are meant to encapsulate the feelings of need and confusion, the desire for understanding and acceptance, and ultimately the finality and the sometimes futility of life. This research project explores issues of historic preservation, gentrification, and the contention over public space and culture. More specifically, it analyzes these elements within the setting of the historic Gaslamp Quarter and Horton Plaza in downtown San Diego. By tracing their development and conception from the early 1970s into the twenty-first century, this research reveals the different types of images and cultures that city leaders and developers created within the built environment. Building the Ark is a reference to the Biblical story of Noah's and the Ark. I became fascinated with this story a few years ago after realizing that, like many females mentioned in the Bible, the wife of Noah has no name and is simply a peripheral figure. This title poem, which attempts to uncover the story of a modern-day nameless wife of Noah, soon became central to the focus of the entire manuscript. Where It's At: Testing Urban Residential Preferences Of Creative And Noncreative Classes Of College Students., Robert Benjamin Travis Decola

This thesis uses data collected from a larger survey about residential preferences of undergraduate college students to show that a distinct group of creative students has a statistically significant preference for an urban residence. In addition to predicting urban residential preferences, students who have a creative major also have a significantly higher desire for bohemian cultural amenities. Regression results indicate that having a creative major mediates the direct effect of desiring bohemian cultural amenities on the preference for an urban residential environment. The evidence suggests that having a creative major socializes individuals into valuing bohemian cultural amenities in order to …

Raised as a member of Chicago’s upper middle class, Coolidge was prepared for a life as a wife and mother. An amateur pianist, she regularly performed at many of Chicago’s musicales. This study focuses on individual development and transformation of West Virginia University (WVU) McNair scholars as they exist in numerous realities. These scholars are first-generation/low-income students and/or minority students that wish to obtain their terminal degree. McNair scholars begin as undergraduate students ensconced within the educational community of the McNair Scholars Program (MSP) at WVU then independently enter graduate school programs throughout the nation. The WVU McNair scholars Program is one of over 170 national McNair programs within American higher education. With Playhouse interns coming from a variety of learning and teaching backgrounds, it occurred to me that there was a need for training that introduces all of these new, young teachers to working with all groups of students, grades K-12, in the theatre. Thus, I have created Lights Up!, a resource stripped of educational psychology jargon that is meant to help theatre students teach and to help education majors acquire the skill of using theatre as a tool.

This thesis consists of six essays written in the genre of creative nonfiction. The focus of the work is my experience of living in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and teaching at the American School from 1969-1971 when I was in my early twenties. The essays are sourced in 104 letters I sent to my family; entries in two daybooks; photos; and my roommate's diary. The events suggested by these primary sources have been enriched by information acquired through academic research and by details provided by conversations and correspondence with the people who shared the experiences with me. The current study investigated the out-of-school activities in which adolescents participate categorised in terms of structure, type (creative, physical, passive) and level of interaction (individual, group), the developmental, psychological and social consequences of such involvement, and the factors influencing participation. Questionnaires completed by 1280, 12 to 17 year old Western Australian metropolitan, high-school students provided information on adolescents' out-of-school time use, their perceptions of parental values and behaviours, friends' behaviours and relationships and their own behaviours and beliefs. A model, based on the research literature, indicated that parent support and intrinsic motivation were the two factors contributing most to adolescent …

The aim of this paper is to enter into the debate about meaning and movement and challenge the idea of dance as linguistic communication. Without words, and even with words according to some linguistic theorists, it's not possible to make sense unless we come to an agreement about a set of shared concepts. This is difficult in dance, an art form that has been silent, but undergoing evolutionary change for a large part of its history. I take the point of view that performance movement is even more arbitrary than text as a form of signification. We can read words …

This study explores the experiences of older volunteers and their managers in particular when a change in the perfonnance of the volunteer is noticed by the manager. The impetus for this study was an expressed concern of the managers of volunteers which classified the management of 'older volunteers" as being somehow different from their younger counterparts. Conducted within an interpretivist framework this study employed a two-phase methodology comprising a context setting descriptive quantitative study followed by an in-depth qualitative grounded theory approach. The importance of the in-depth examination revealed the importance of context to the management process.
