Aristotelian Privacy: Perfectionism, Pornography, And The Virtues Of The Polis, G. Scott Davis
Aristotelian Privacy: Perfectionism, Pornography, And The Virtues Of The Polis, G. Scott Davis
Religious Studies Faculty Publications
In the United States privacy is a hot topic, not least because of the current administration's desire to have unbridled access to its citizens' overseas conversations. But in what follows I do not plan to deal directly with any legal or policy concerns. Instead, I am interested in the philosophical foundations,- if any there be, of privacy as something to which individuals and other groups may be entitled. Because much of the discussion of "privacy rights" has revolved around matters sexual, I shall key the discussion to individual access to sexually explicit publications and what limits, if any, moral reflection …

On Rhetoric As Gift/Giving, Mari Lee Mifsud
On Rhetoric As Gift/Giving, Mari Lee Mifsud
Rhetoric and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
In this essay, I explore the possibilities of rhetoric as gift. I begin with the Homeric gift economy and the rhetorical resources of this economy. My use of "economy" here is not reducible to a monetary exchange system, but rather a more general system of practices orchestrating cultural identity and relations. As Georges Bataille suggests, studying a general economy may hold the key to all the problems posed by every discipline (1991, 10). For Bataille everything from geophysics to political economy, by way of sociology, history and biology, to psychology, philosophy, art, literature, and poetry has an essential connection with …
The Myth, Paul Meske
The Myth, Paul Meske
Masters Theses
The Myth chronicles a few days in the life of a young man in search of his place in the world. Through flashbacks and discussions concerning choice and purpose, Adam tries to carve out a life for himself after everyone he knows melts away. Adam discovers many things about himself and how the people around him come to embrace their choices. In the end, Adam attempts to make his own choice and to land somewhere nice and peaceful.

Honors Theses
The United States intelligence community is an integral part of the security of our' nation. It has been continually growing and redesigning itself for the past 230 years to suit the needs of the people and of the nation. Inhibiting the American intelligence system, however, is the struggle for the U.S. to find a balance between the rights of the people and the security of the nation. This struggle has been at the basis of change in almost every instance of intelligence redesign. It is these changes that have become the study of this thesis. Major trends found in the …

A Study On Bruce, Mississippi, Susan Nicola Penman
Honors Theses
This is a paper about the people who live, or have lived, in Bruce, Mississippi. Between September 2004 and March 2007 I made photographs in the town; between September 2005 and December 2006 I conducted 19 interviews with 19 different town residents. Each interview was slightly different; the questions I asked varied according to such factors as the occupation and age of the interviewee, the position the interviewee had in the town society, and the particular issues I was interested in exploring at the time. My questions changed and developed as I learned more about the town. As a result, …
"The Problematic Business Of Living Itself" : David Mamet's Devolving Theater, Kristopher Aaron Spring
"The Problematic Business Of Living Itself" : David Mamet's Devolving Theater, Kristopher Aaron Spring
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
David Mamet's ’style is remarkably minimal; there is little in the way of stage direction and his dialogue is often a staccato vernacular. At the same time, within the apparently loose frameworks of his plays lie the seeds of their own destruction: Mamet makes up for the lack of obvious, literal stage direction with the subtle downward spiral of the plot; the coarse frankness of the language depicts worlds nearly devoid of - or at least rapidly losing - their sense of morality or whatever implicit ideas and ideals are central to maintaining the appearance of the status quo. Whether …

Authorship, Audiences, And Anonymous Speech, Thomas F. Cotter, Lyrissa Lidsky
Faculty Publications
A series of United States Supreme Court decisions establishes that the First Amendment provides a qualified right to speak and publish anonymously, or under a pseudonym. But the Court has never clearly defined the scope of this right. As a result, lower courts have been left with little guidance when it comes to dealing both with the Internet-fueled growth of torts and crimes committed by anonymous speakers, and with the increasing number of lawsuits aimed at silencing legitimate anonymous speech. In this Article, we provide both positive and normative foundations for a comprehensive approach to anonymous speech. We first draw …

No Law: Deadwood And The State, Mark L. Berrettini
School of Film Faculty Publications and Presentations
Deadwood's final episode of season 3 opens with a monologue from theater operator Jack Langrishe (Brian Cox), a relative newcomer to the camp of Deadwood. Shown in a wide shot that spotlights him on the dark stage of his nascent theater, Langrishe ostensibly speaks to one of his companions, the actress Claudia (Cynthia Ettinger), shown in one medium reverse-shot. Yet Langrishe also speaks and performs beyond the theater to the residents of Deadwood and to the program's viewers extradiagetically as he sums up the tense state of affairs within the camp: This camp is in mortal danger. The man Hearst …
