Graduate Record 2007: Bulldog Prints Edition, Southwestern Oklahoma State University

SWOSU Yearbooks

During the 2006-2007 school year, students participated in everything from palooza, to studying at the library, to having fun at Cowboys. With the fall semester beginning, students looked forward to attending athletic activities, homecoming, and the Miss Southwestern Pageant. Spring semester started out a little slick, causing the campus to close for the first time in several years. Despite a chilly start, the semester warmed up in March when actor Pauly Shore visited campus for Panorama. With spring break approaching, students were anxious for a break from studying. When classes resumed, everyone was looking forward to summer. With finals standing …

Born Of Freedom And Dissent: A Comparative Analysis Of American Antiwar Protest In The First 1,418 Days Of The Vietnam And Iraq Wars, Thomas N. Ratliff Jan 2007

Born Of Freedom And Dissent: A Comparative Analysis Of American Antiwar Protest In The First 1,418 Days Of The Vietnam And Iraq Wars, Thomas N. Ratliff

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Cultural aesthetics are the latent effects of human relations informing cognitive schemas as cultural variations of social forms in specific time-space contexts. To understand what conditions produce intra-national conflict during wartime, engagement reactivity between social control mechanisms and antiwar protesters was measured. Hypothesis-1 showed high numbers of arrests were influenced by the type and duration of protest and military presence at protest events during Vietnam, whereas place and size of protest were influential during Iraq. Hypothesis-2 showed that where and how antiwar protests occur has changed. Hypothesis-3 showed that, compared to Vietnam, Iraq antiwar protest has increased initial reactivity-intensity, has …

The Commodification Of Tragedy: A Critical Examination Of Contemporary Film, Harold Dawson Jan 2007

The Commodification Of Tragedy: A Critical Examination Of Contemporary Film, Harold Dawson

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The commodification of tragedy is an examination of contemporary film that depicts real events of human tragedy that are imposed on human society. Commodities are the cultural products of capitalist society through which meanings are attached; nationally released film and documentary-style cinematic productions are objects for consumption that presents tragedy as a simplistic and distorted spectacle of simulated reality. Titanic, United 93, and We Are…Marshall! share the conspicuous traits of distortion in historical facts through fictionalization of the event and reduction of complexity carried out by the entertainment industry.

Visual Culture Archaeology: A Criti/Politi/Cal Methodology Of Image And Identity, James Haywood Rolling Jr. Jan 2007

Visual Culture Archaeology: A Criti/Politi/Cal Methodology Of Image And Identity, James Haywood Rolling Jr.

Teaching and Leadership - All Scholarship

This study argues the efficacy of the phenomenological cultural work of a visual culture archaeology that liberates a political and critical identity, resistant to domination, authoring social change and its own agency through multiple and incommensurable positions. Built upon Foucauldian premises, visual culture archaeology is developed as a methodology for discursive un-naming and re-naming, and emerges from the inherence and attenuation of inscripted meanings in the reinterpretation of identity during a postmodern confluence of ideas and images. The hybridized representation of the African American in Western visual culture has been unique in the effort by some to define us over …

The Queer Tourist In 'Straight'(?) Space: Sexual Citizenship In Provincetown, Sandra Faiman-Silva Jan 2007

The Queer Tourist In 'Straight'(?) Space: Sexual Citizenship In Provincetown, Sandra Faiman-Silva

Anthropology Faculty Publications

Provincetown, Massachusetts USA, a rural out-of-the-way coastal village at the tip of Cape Cod with a yearround population of approximately 3,500, has 'taken off' since the late 1980s as a popular GLBTQ tourist destination. Long tolerant of sexual minorities, Provincetown transitioned from a Portuguese-dominated fishing village to a popular 'queer' gay resort mecca, as the fishing industry deteriorated drastically over the twentieth century. Today Provincetowners rely mainly on tourists—both straight and gay—who enjoy the seaside charm, rustic ambiance, and a healthy dose of non-heternormative performance content, in this richly diverse tourist milieu. As Provincetown's popularity as a GLBTQ tourist destination …
