Rhetorical Counterinsurgency: The Fbi And The American Indian Movement, Casey Ryan Kelly Jan 2007

Rhetorical Counterinsurgency: The Fbi And The American Indian Movement, Casey Ryan Kelly

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

In 2007, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents Joseph H. and John M. Trimbach published a tell-all book to expose the crimes of American Indian Movement (AIM) and dispel contemporary myths about Bureau conspiracies against Indian activists. The book provides an insiders’ account of the agents’ participation in the investigation of AIM and attempts to correct what they characterize as popular revisionist history accusing the FBI of gross injustices against Indian Country. The agents argue that as far as AIM is concerned, in the halls of academia, “There is a market for blurring the historical lines between fact and fiction” (2007, …

A New Approach For Evaluating The Order Fulfillment Process Options Of B2c Horizontal Portals Using Dea (Data Envelopment Analysis), Tapati Bandopadhyay, Pradeep Kumar Jan 2007

A New Approach For Evaluating The Order Fulfillment Process Options Of B2c Horizontal Portals Using Dea (Data Envelopment Analysis), Tapati Bandopadhyay, Pradeep Kumar

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

By using the traditional statistical or operations research methods for deciding the product-delivery logistics, the portal companies are not using their competitive advantages on being more e-enabled, informed and computationally able than their traditional counterparts. In this paper, we show some typical characteristics of the portals like their handling of a huge range of goods in terms of transactional values or volumes. Subsequently, we have identified three types of generic product-delivery logistics of the portals with various intermediate entities or trading partners. Then, a completely different approach using an extreme point method rather than the traditional central-tendency-based statistical methods has …

Personal Data Collection Via The Internet: The Role Of Privacy Sensitivity And Technology Trust, Susan K. Lippert, Paul Michael Swiercz Jan 2007

Personal Data Collection Via The Internet: The Role Of Privacy Sensitivity And Technology Trust, Susan K. Lippert, Paul Michael Swiercz

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Policy makers and researchers from a wide range of perspectives have expressed concern about the interplay between privacy rights and information exchanges via the Internet. Of particular interest has been the challenge of protecting sensitive personal information. In this paper, we assert that user willingness to share sensitive data is an area of critical concern and requires additional investigation. In an effort to enrich the dialogue on the question of voluntary sharing of sensitive personal data via the Internet, we present a model showcasing the relationship between personal data sharing, privacy sensitivity, and technology trust and discuss how organizations can …

In Search Of Factors To Online Game Addiction And Its Implications, Yangil Park, Jeng-Chung V. Chen Jan 2007

In Search Of Factors To Online Game Addiction And Its Implications, Yangil Park, Jeng-Chung V. Chen

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Research has explored online users who are hooked on Internet applications such as chat rooms, web surfing, and interactive games. Online game addiction is one of the problems arisen from the use of the Internet. This study is motivated by a causal connection found from previous research of computer game addiction. The study describes two typical types of online games and looks further into the causes of the addiction by using two main theories. We also propose research hypotheses and discuss possible implications of online game addiction.

An Examination Of Internet Effectiveness For Non-Work Activities, Pruthikrai Mahatanankoon, Tim Klaus, H. Joseph Wen Jan 2007

An Examination Of Internet Effectiveness For Non-Work Activities, Pruthikrai Mahatanankoon, Tim Klaus, H. Joseph Wen

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

The Internet is frequently used for non-work activities. When used for these purposes, the effectiveness of the Internet in accomplishing these leisure activities becomes an important consideration. Research literature has remained relatively silent in regards to the examination of accomplishing non-work tasks through the Internet. This study uses Davis’ Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as a basis to predict different types of common user web activities—entertainment, communicating, and information searching. Using Structured Equation Modeling, this paper examines the effectiveness of the Internet in accomplishing non-work activities. In this study, the overall analysis of the survey data suggests that perceived ease of …

Improving Credit Card Operations With Data Mining Techniques, Malini Krishnamurthi Jan 2007

Improving Credit Card Operations With Data Mining Techniques, Malini Krishnamurthi

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Consumer credit is ubiquitous and lending poses credit risk – the risk of economic loss due to the failure of a borrower to repay according to the terms of his or her contract with the lender. And so, managing credit risk entails estimating the potential ability of borrowers to repay their debts. Researchers have sought to identify factors that contribute to consumer risk, by using quantitative models. However, the presence of data mining techniques to identify credit risk cannot be ignored. There is a paucity of research to demonstrate the use of data mining techniques in this context, and such …

Fostering The Development Of Vocabulary Knowledge And Reading Comprehension Though Contextually-Based Multiple Meaning Vocabulary Instruction, J. Ron Nelson, Scott A. Stage Jan 2007

Fostering The Development Of Vocabulary Knowledge And Reading Comprehension Though Contextually-Based Multiple Meaning Vocabulary Instruction, J. Ron Nelson, Scott A. Stage

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

The primary purpose of this study was to assess the effects of contextually-based multiple meaning (i.e., words with multiple meanings) vocabulary instruction on the vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension of students. Third and 5th grade students received either contextually-based multiple meaning vocabulary instruction embedded in the standard language arts instruction offered to all students over a three-month period or the standard language arts instruction alone (i.e., non-specific treatment). Students who received the contextually-based multiple meaning instruction generally showed statistically and educationally significant gains in their vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension relative to students who did not. These gains were most …

Personal, Interpersonal, And Political Temperaments, John Alford, John R. Hibbing Jan 2007

Personal, Interpersonal, And Political Temperaments, John Alford, John R. Hibbing

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

Are political liberals generous? Are political conservatives conscientious? Are generous people personally agreeable? Research in behavioral genetics and elsewhere increasingly indicates a biological basis for the manner in which people behave in personal, interpersonal, and political situations, but this biological basis does not mean behavior in these three very different contexts is correlated. In this article, using an original data set obtained from nearly three hundred subjects, the authors are able to test for the degree to which personal, interpersonal, and political temperaments are related. As expected, the overall correlations are quite low. Standard personality traits do not predict political …

The Biology Of Political Behavior: An Introduction, John R. Hibbing, Kevin B. Smith Jan 2007

The Biology Of Political Behavior: An Introduction, John R. Hibbing, Kevin B. Smith

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

A broad cross-section of the social sciences is increasingly turning to biology and evolutionary theory to help explain human behavior. Political science is a notable exception to this trend, even though there are sound conceptual reasons for expecting biological processes to play an important role in explaining political behavior. While agreeing with the conceptual arguments, the authors believe original empirical research is the most persuasive means of convincing political science to incorporate biology in explanations of political behavior. Techniques developed in neuroscience, behavioral genetics, agent-based simulation, experimental economics, and other fields offer exciting research opportunities to explore questions of central …

The Role Of Drinking Motives In Social Anxiety And Alcohol Use, Lindsay S. Ham, Michel Bonin, Debra A. Hope Jan 2007

The Role Of Drinking Motives In Social Anxiety And Alcohol Use, Lindsay S. Ham, Michel Bonin, Debra A. Hope

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Although social anxiety and problem drinking commonly co-occur, the relationship between social anxiety and drinking among college students is not well understood. The current study examined the relationship between drinking motives, or reasons for drinking, and social anxiety in 239 volunteers. Contrary to hypotheses, high (n = 83), moderate (n = 90), and low (n = 66) social anxiety groups did not differ in endorsement of coping and conformity drinking motives. Further, social anxiety was negatively related to weekly alcohol use and unrelated to alcohol-related problems. Post hoc hierarchical multiple regression analyses conducted for each social anxiety …

American Sociological Association, Michael R. Hill Jan 2007

American Sociological Association, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The American Sociological Association (ASA) is currently the largest and most influential membership organization of professional sociologists in the US. The ASA began its organizational life in 1905 when a small group of self-selected scholars representing several existing scholarly organizations (including the American Economic Association, the American Historical Association, and the American Political Science Association) proposed a separate and independent American Sociological Society (ASS) ("Organization of the American Sociological Society" 1906). The first ASS annual meeting convened December 27-29, 1906, in Providence, Rhode Island, with 115 members and a full program of scholarly papers. In 1959 the organization's name was …

Is Support For Top Managers' Dynamic Capabilities, Environmental Dynamism, And Firm Performance: An Empirical Investigation, Michael J. Zhang Jan 2007

Is Support For Top Managers' Dynamic Capabilities, Environmental Dynamism, And Firm Performance: An Empirical Investigation, Michael J. Zhang

WCBT Faculty Publications

Despite a continual interest in developing information systems (IS) to support the work of top managers, assessing the impact of IS support for top managers and their capabilities on the bottom-line performance of firms has received little attention in existing literature. Drawing upon the resource based view of competitive advantage, this paper argues that firms that provide IS support for their top managers’ dynamic capabilities may enjoy competitive advantage and superior firm performance. The performance impact of IS support for two key dynamic capabilities of top managers (fast response and mental model building) under different (dynamic vs. stable) external environments …

Endorser Source Credibility: Redefining Spokesperson Influence Through Development Of The Celebrity-Hero Matrix, Joshua Shuart Jan 2007

Endorser Source Credibility: Redefining Spokesperson Influence Through Development Of The Celebrity-Hero Matrix, Joshua Shuart

WCBT Faculty Publications

Endorsement of sport and non-sport products by athletes is an extremely popular method that corporations use to drive sales and advertising. Traditionally, celebrity endorsement research has focused on the physical attractiveness of the endorser; while this makes sense, it provides only a partial explanation why consumers purchase athlete-endorsed products. Several other components of source credibility, as well as previously unexplored elements such as "heroic" traits, prove to be stronger predictors of intent-to-purchase. A 3-phase research study of Americans aged 18-35 was conducted, with a Celebrity-Hero Matrix© (CHM) developed and several marketing recommendations made based on the findings.

On The Importance Of Coping: A Model And New Directions For Research On Work And Family, Cynthia A. Thompson, Steven A. Y. Poelmans, Tammy D. Allen, Jeanine K. Andreassi Jan 2007

On The Importance Of Coping: A Model And New Directions For Research On Work And Family, Cynthia A. Thompson, Steven A. Y. Poelmans, Tammy D. Allen, Jeanine K. Andreassi

WCBT Faculty Publications

In this chapter, we review empirical research evidence regarding coping and work–family conflict. Limitations and gaps associated with the existing literature are discussed. Of special note is the finding that there is little systematic research that examines the process of coping with work– family conflict. Building on the general stress and coping literature, we present a theoretical model that is specifically focused on the process of coping with work–family conflict, and highlight presumed personal and situational antecedents. Finally, the chapter concludes with an agenda for future research.

Heroes In Sport: Assessing Celebrity Endorser Effectiveness, Joshua Shuart Jan 2007

Heroes In Sport: Assessing Celebrity Endorser Effectiveness, Joshua Shuart

WCBT Faculty Publications

The use of celebrities, and particularly athletes, to influence consumers and sell products is not a new practice, but one that is gaining considerable steam in the sports marketplace. However, many academics and practitioners have long questioned the means by which celebrity endorsement is measured and evaluated. Through the use of validated surveys among US students and the inauguration of the Celebrity-Hero Matrix (CHM), some of their questions are answered. Being labelled a 'heroic' athlete does, it seems, have tremendous power for marketers, and provides endorsement clout for the athlete.

Hazing Of Canada Geese Is Unlikely To Reduce Nuisance Populations In Urban And Suburban Communities, Robin A. Holevinski, Paul D. Curtis, Richard A. Malecki Jan 2007

Hazing Of Canada Geese Is Unlikely To Reduce Nuisance Populations In Urban And Suburban Communities, Robin A. Holevinski, Paul D. Curtis, Richard A. Malecki

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Growing populations of resident Canada geese (Branta canadensis) have caused increased nuisance problems in urban and suburban communities. Hazing, or persistent harassment, is often recommended as a nonlethal management strategy to alleviate these problems. Does hazing simply cause a local redistribution of birds, or can it solve nuisance problems by pushing geese to rural areas where hunting mortality could reduce the population? To answer this question, we marked 368 adult and 400 juvenile geese with leg bands in 1 urban and 1 suburban community in western New York State during June 2002 and 2003. This sample included 30 …

The Root And The Flower: Siddur For Hebrew-Adventist Congregations, Jacques B. Doukhan Jan 2007

The Root And The Flower: Siddur For Hebrew-Adventist Congregations, Jacques B. Doukhan

All Books

Why a Hebrew-Adventist Service?

To offer a special worship experience that combines the joyfulness and reverence, and the sense of community of the Hebrew tradition, with our distinctive Adventist identity.

To help Christians in general, and Seventh-day Adventists in particular, recover their Hebrew roots and enrich their emotional, intellectual, and physical adoration.

To create a spiritual and liturgical environment where Jews as well as Christians can worship the same God of Israel—the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, who also was the God of Peter, John, and Paul—thereby relieving and transcending the Jewish-Christian tension.

Pilgrim To Nowhere - The Mysterious Journey Of Robert Rodes, Emily A. Hartigan Jan 2007

Pilgrim To Nowhere - The Mysterious Journey Of Robert Rodes, Emily A. Hartigan

Faculty Articles

Notre Dame Law Professor Robert Rodes advocates for Pilgrim Law, which is based on the preferential option for the poor. Pilgrim Law is the jurisprudential manifestation of liberation theology. Rodes used Milovan Djilas, author of anti-socialist works such as Conversations with Stalin and The New Class, for insight. Drawing from Djilas, Rodes concludes that class will always count, but count in a nuanced way. This revelation was discovered within Djilas’ self-aware and trenchant analysis amid the reality of the theoretically “classless” societies of Soviet (and Yugoslav) socialism. This empirical insight is what Rodes finds crucial to his Pilgrim Law advocacy. …

Information Inflation: Can The Legal System Adapt?, George L. Paul, Jason R. Baron Jan 2007

Information Inflation: Can The Legal System Adapt?, George L. Paul, Jason R. Baron

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Information is fundamental to the legal system. Accordingly, lawyers must understand that information, as a cultural and technological edifice, has profoundly and irrevocably changed. There has been a civilization- wide morph, or pulse, or one might say that information has evolved. This article discusses the new inflationary dynamic, which has caused written information to multiply by as much as ten thousand-fold recently. The resulting landscape has stressed the legal system and indeed, it is becoming prohibitively expensive for lawyers even to search through information. This is particularly true in litigation.

A Decent Proposal: The Constitutionality Of Indecency Regulation On Cable And Direct Broadcast Satellite Services, Matthew S. Schwartz Jan 2007

A Decent Proposal: The Constitutionality Of Indecency Regulation On Cable And Direct Broadcast Satellite Services, Matthew S. Schwartz

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Little Timmy’s parents both work late, and he often finds himself sitting alone in front of the television after school. He doesn’t know the difference between “broadcast,” “cable,” or “direct broadcast satellite,” but he does know how to work the remote control. One day, as he is clicking through the channels – 2, 4, 7, 93, 128, they’re all the same to him – he comes across a provocative scene. What are those two people doing? he wonders with wide eyes. And where are most of their clothes? At that moment, Timmy’s father walks in and is shocked by the …
