Psychosocial Characteristics Related To Internet Behavior, Lia Bartnicki Jan 2007

Psychosocial Characteristics Related To Internet Behavior, Lia Bartnicki

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The idea that one can suffer from Internet Addiction (IA) is currently being debated in the field of psychology, with mounting evidence to suggest that such and addiction is possible. The goal of this study is to investigate whether several common psychosocial characteristics are associated with IA behavior. Forty-five people participated in the study by completing a battery of questionnaires on IA, personality, and aspects of psychosocial adjustment. Significant correlations were found between IA behavior and self-esteem, loneliness, age, conscientiousness, and sleep deprivation. Such findings suggest that people who report high amounts of IA behavior may be experiencing significant psychosocial …

Computational Study Of Laminar Separation Bubble Development Over Supersonic Airfoils At Subsonic Speeds, Josiah D. Elliott Jan 2007

Computational Study Of Laminar Separation Bubble Development Over Supersonic Airfoils At Subsonic Speeds, Josiah D. Elliott

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Laminar Separation Bubbles (LSBs) are regions of separated flow that start near the leading edge of an airfoil and reattach further down the airfoil surface. These regions of separation can appear at low angles of attack and can grow significantly as the angle of attack is increased heavily influencing the flow characteristics over the airfoil. Research on this topic is driven by the supersonic business jet industry which has a particular interest in this type of research due to performance requirements in both the subsonic and supersonic flight regimes. This manuscript is focused on the flow developments near the sharp …

Telangiectasia Detection In Dermoscopy Images, David Erdos Jan 2007

Telangiectasia Detection In Dermoscopy Images, David Erdos

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Melanoma lesions that exhibit irregular linear vessels can be misdiagnosed due to the fact that their clinical appearance can often closely resemble other skin conditions. Detection these irregular linear blood vessels, or telangiectasia could improve the accuracy of melanoma diagnosis. An algorithm that detects telangiectasia has been developed; it initially searches for color drops in an image in various directions and then uses various post processing techniques to improve the accuracy. The feasibility of using classifiers such as neural networks to further improve the accuracy has also been investigated.

Unleaded Drinking Water: Equilibrium Potential Measurements For Monochloramine Disinfectant, Brandi Clark Jan 2007

Unleaded Drinking Water: Equilibrium Potential Measurements For Monochloramine Disinfectant, Brandi Clark

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The strength of monochloramine, NH2CI, as an oxidizing agent can be linked to its effect on Pb levels in drinking water. In this study, the equilibrium potential was measured as a function of pH from pH 8 to 12 and compared to a theoretical plot of formal potentials derived from the Nemst equation. The measured equilibrium potential was consistently about 300 mV more negative than the calculated potential - NH2CI is a weaker oxidizing agent than predicted. When the measured potentials are plotted on a Pourbaix diagram, it is found that NH2CI can oxidize …

Diagnostic Importance Of Bone Marrow Examination In Non-Hematological Disorders, Naveen Naz Syed, Bushra Moiz, Salman Adil, Mohammad Khurshid Jan 2007

Diagnostic Importance Of Bone Marrow Examination In Non-Hematological Disorders, Naveen Naz Syed, Bushra Moiz, Salman Adil, Mohammad Khurshid

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Objective: To evaluate the frequency of involvement of bone marrow with non-haematologic disorders and to observe the significance of bone marrow examination in establishing primary diagnosis of the same.
Methods: It was a descriptive study that extended from January 2003 to September 2005. A total of 4569 bone marrow aspirate and trephines were reported during this period. Only the non-haematological disorders were analyzed for their clinical and laboratory parameter.
Results: During the study period, 63 patients (1.4%) were diagnosed to have non-haematological diseases detected primarily through bone marrow examination. The mean age of patients at time of …

Comparison Of Different Phenotypic Methods Of Detection Of Methicillin Resistance In Staphylococcus Aureus With The Molecular Detection Of Mec-A Gene, M Zeeshan, K Jabeen, E Khan, S Irfan, S Ibrahim, Z Parween, Afia Zafar Jan 2007

Comparison Of Different Phenotypic Methods Of Detection Of Methicillin Resistance In Staphylococcus Aureus With The Molecular Detection Of Mec-A Gene, M Zeeshan, K Jabeen, E Khan, S Irfan, S Ibrahim, Z Parween, Afia Zafar

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate accuracy, cost-effectiveness and ease to perform different phenotypic methods i.e. Cefoxitin 30 microg disc, Oxacillin 1microg disc and Oxacillin agar screening plate (6microg/ml ) for early and accurate identification of MRSA by comparing with the detection of mec-A gene in our clinical isolates.
DESIGN: A comparative study.
PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: Clinical samples submitted in the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, from 1st August to 31st October 2006.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Out of 200 clinical samples, conventional Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was done on 62 pure biochemically identified S. aureus …

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

During 5 months in 2004–2005, buffalopoxvirus infection, confirmed by virus isolation and limited nucleic acid sequencing, spread between 5 burns units in Karachi, Pakistan. The outbreak was related to movement of patients between units. Control measures reduced transmission, but sporadic cases continued due to the admission of new patients with community-acquired infections.

Resource Allocation Within The National Aids Control Program Of Pakistan: A Qualitative Assessment Of Decision Maker's Opinions, Sara Husain, Masood Kadir, Zafar Fatmi Jan 2007

Resource Allocation Within The National Aids Control Program Of Pakistan: A Qualitative Assessment Of Decision Maker's Opinions, Sara Husain, Masood Kadir, Zafar Fatmi

Community Health Sciences

Background:

Limited resources, whether public or private, demand prioritisation among competing needs to maximise productivity. With a substantial increase in the number of reported HIV cases, little work has been done to understand how resources have been distributed and what factors may have influenced allocation within the newly introduced Enhanced National AIDS Control Program of Pakistan. The objective of this study was to identify perceptions of decision makers about the process of resource allocation within Pakistan's Enhanced National AIDS Control Program.

Methods:

A qualitative study was undertaken and in-depth interviews of decision makers at provincial and federal levels responsible to …
