Event-Based Data Collection For Generating Actuated Controller Performance Measures, Edward J. Smaglik, Anuj Sharma, Darcy M. Bullock, James R. Sturdevant, Gary Duncan

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Cycle-by-cycle data have been shown to be effective in the analysis of a signalized intersection with measures of effectiveness such as volume-to-capacity ratios, arrival type, and average vehicular delay. Currently, actuated traffic controllers are unable to store vehicle counts and vehicle occupancy in cycle-by-cycle bins, requiring extra equipment and personnel to collect data in these bins. The objective of this research was to develop an integrated general purpose data collection module that time stamps detector and phase state changes within a National Electrical Manufacturers Association actuated traffic signal controller and uses those data to provide quantitative graphs to assess arterial …

Evaluation Of The Streambed Leakage Concept In Analytical Models Using Data From Three Pumping Tests, Sefan J. Kollet, Vitaly A. Zlotnik Jan 2007

Evaluation Of The Streambed Leakage Concept In Analytical Models Using Data From Three Pumping Tests, Sefan J. Kollet, Vitaly A. Zlotnik

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Two-dimensional analytical models of pumping induced drawdown and stream depletion account for the streambed properties and stream geometry. Using data from three pumping tests performed under various hydrologic conditions, the following hypotheses were tested: (1) a partially penetrating stream at a certain distance from the pumping well can be represented by the streambed leakage term in the analytical models; (2) in the streambed leakage term, the streambed conductance coefficient λ=(WK′)/m′ accounts for the average stream width W, the streambed thickness m′, and hydraulic conductivity K′. The first hypothesis was tested by comparing results from tests under flow and no-flow stream …

Stream Network Characteristics Used To Infer The Distribution Of Fold Types In The Zagros Simply Folded Belt, Iran, Caroline M. Burberry, John W. Cosgrove, Jian Guo Liu

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Progressive deformation at a convergent margin (the Zagros Simply Folded Belt) was analysed using satellite images, digital elevation models, contour maps and artificially generated stream networks. Two end-member fold types (fault-bend folds and detachment folds) interact with streams flowing from the High Zagros Mountains into the Persian Gulf. Growing folds divert streams and create wind or water gaps in characteristic patterns which are related to the uplift histories of the two fold types. Additionally, the symmetry of minor channels reflects the inherent symmetry of the folds. The distribution of fold types is shown for the region N27°- N30°, E50°-E54° at …

Modeling Annual Extreme Precipitation In China Using The Generalized Extreme Value Distribution, Song Feng, Saralees Nadarajah, Qi Hu Jan 2007

Modeling Annual Extreme Precipitation In China Using The Generalized Extreme Value Distribution, Song Feng, Saralees Nadarajah, Qi Hu

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Extreme precipitation events are the major causes of severe floods in China. In this study, four time series of daily, 2-day, 5-day, and 10-day annual maximum precipitation from 1951 to 2000 at 651 weather stations in China were analyzed. The generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution was used, to model the annual extreme precipitation events at each station. The GEV distribution was also modified to explore the linear temporal trends in the extreme events. The results showed that more than 12% of the stations have significant (p-value < 0.10) linear trends. Decreasing trends are mainly observed in northern China, and increasing trends are observed in the Yangtze River basin and northwestern China. The return periods of extreme participation have changed stations with significant temporal trends. The 50-year event observed in parts of the Yangtze River basin, and northwestern China during the 1951-60, has become a more frequent 25-year event in the 1990s. The spatial distribution of the return levels of the 651 stations are closely related to the climatic mean precipitation, and are influenced by the East Asian summer monsoon system (return levels are measures of extremity – for example, a 10 year return level is the value that can be expected to be exceeded on average once in every 10 years). The return period of extreme precipitation, that caused the 1998 severe floods in the Yangtze River basin, was also evaluated from a probabilistic perspective.

We have conducted a survey of 61 southern white dwarfs searching for magnetic fields using Zeeman spectropolarimetry. Our objective is to obtain a magnetic field distribution for these objects and, in particular, to find white dwarfs with weak fields. We found one possible candidate (WD 0310-688) that may have a weak magnetic field of -6.1 ±2.2 kG. Next, we determine the fraction and distribution of magnetic white dwarfs in the solar neighborhood and investigate the probability of finding more of these objects based on the current incidence of magnetism in white dwarfs within 20 pc of the Sun. We have …

Opting Out: Procedural Fair Use, Michael Mattioli Jan 2007

Opting Out: Procedural Fair Use, Michael Mattioli

Articles by Maurer Faculty

This article explores the advantages of opt-out plans, and identifies a critical shortcoming in Copyright's doctrine of Fair Use. The discussion is fueled by a current controversy: In December of 2004, Google, Inc. announced its plan to digitally scan thousands of copyrighted books as part of a massive new digital indexing service. Hedging against possible litigation, Google provided a free and easy opt-out procedure for authors who didn't want their books scanned. Despite this measure, two major authors' groups have sued Google, claiming the opt-out plan imposes an unfair burden. This article explores the fairness of established opt-outs in contract …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Shipboard measurements of air/sea fluxes and sea surface concentrations of dimethylsulfide (DMS) were made over the tropical and midlatitude North Pacific Ocean. Atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry was used to measure DMS levels in ambient air and in air equilibrated with surface seawater drawn from a depth of 5 m. Air/sea fluxes were obtained using eddy covariance. Corrections and uncertainties involved in the calculation of fluxes from shipboard data are discussed. The surface ocean DMS concentrations measured during this study ranged from 1 to 10 nM, and atmospheric mixing ratios ranged from 20 to 1000 ppt. Air/sea fluxes ranged …

Flavin Charge Transfer Transitions Assist Dna Photolyase Electron Transfer, Spiros S. Skourtis, Tatiana Prytkova, David Beratan

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

This contribution describes molecular dynamics, semi-empirical and ab-initio studies of the primary photo-induced electron transfer reaction in DNA photolyase. DNA photolyases are FADH−-containing proteins that repair UV-damaged DNA by photo-induced electron transfer. A DNA photolyase recognizes and binds to cyclobutatne pyrimidine dimer lesions of DNA. The protein repairs a bound lesion by transferring an electron to the lesion from FADH−, upon photo-excitation of FADH− with 350–450 nm light. We compute the lowest singlet excited states of FADH− in DNA photolyase using INDO/S configuration interaction, time-dependent density-functional, and time-dependent Hartree-Fock methods. The calculations identify the lowest singlet excited state of FADH− …

Contagious Efficiency: The Growing Reliance On U.S.-Style Antitrust Settlements In Eu Law, George S. Georgiev Jan 2007

Contagious Efficiency: The Growing Reliance On U.S.-Style Antitrust Settlements In Eu Law, George S. Georgiev

Articles

This Article analyzes the impact of the introduction of U.S.-style antitrust settlement procedures in EU law, which occurred in 2004 as part of an ambitious antitrust modernisation program. After documenting the lack of a settlement tradition in the EU legal system or the legal systems of EU member states, I argue that the new procedures were transplanted from U.S. law and that this was done without sufficient tailoring. Relying on lessons from the longstanding U.S. experience with antitrust settlements and on emerging evidence about the EU's own approach since 2004, I analyze the effects from the introduction of settlements at …

Latino Inter-Ethnic Employment Discrimination And The Diversity Defense, Tanya K. Hernandez Jan 2007

Latino Inter-Ethnic Employment Discrimination And The Diversity Defense, Tanya K. Hernandez

Faculty Scholarship

With the growing racial and ethnic diversity of the U.S. population and workforce, scholars have begun to address the ways in which coalition building across groups not only will continue to be necessary but also will become even more complex. Recent scholarship has focused on analyzing how best to promote effective coalition building. Thus far, scholars have not examined what that growing racial and ethnic diversity will mean in the context of individual racial and ethnic discrimination claims. What will antidiscrimination litigation look like when all the parties involved are non-White but nonetheless plaintiffs allege that a racial hierarchy exists …

Optimization Of A Dual-Mode Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor, Prasanth Bathae Kumaresh Jan 2007

Optimization Of A Dual-Mode Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor, Prasanth Bathae Kumaresh

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Surface plasmon waves are TM polarized charge density waves that propagate at the interface of two media with real dielectric constants of opposite sign (i.e. liquid dielectric and certain metals). Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors use these waves to detect refractive index changes adjacent to the metal layer. Refractive index changes arise from the binding of an analyte (e.g. a target molecule, protein, or bacterium) to the functionalized metal layer or from interfering effects such as changes in solution index. Standard, single channel SPR sensors cannot differentiate these two effects as their design allows only one mode to be coupled. …

Rule Extraction To Establish Criteria For Minicell Design In Mass Customization Manufacturing, Smitha Thuramalla Jan 2007

Rule Extraction To Establish Criteria For Minicell Design In Mass Customization Manufacturing, Smitha Thuramalla

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Minicell-based manufacturing system is used in identifying best minicell designs. The existing method of minicell design generates best minicell designs by designing and scheduling minicells simultaneously. While in this research designing of minicells and scheduling of jobs in minicells is done separately. This research evaluates the effectiveness of hierarchical approach and compares with simultaneous method. Minicell designs with respect to average flow times and machine capacities and both are identified in a multi-stage flow shop environment. Rules for the extraction of good minicell designs in mass customization manufacturing systems are also established.

Implementation And Validation Of The Hybrid Turbulence Models In An Unstructured Grid Code, Sri S. Panguluri Jan 2007

Implementation And Validation Of The Hybrid Turbulence Models In An Unstructured Grid Code, Sri S. Panguluri

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Since its introduction in 1997, the use of Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) and similar hybrid turbulence techniques has become increasingly popular in the field of CFD. However, with increased use some of the limitations of the DES model have become apparent. One of these is the dependence of DES on grid construction, particularly regarding the point of transition between the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes and Large Eddy Simulation models. An additional issue that arises with unstructured grids is the definition of the grid spacing in the implementation of a DES length scale. To lay the ground work to study these effects the …

Viscoelastic Relaxation Characteristics Of Rubbery Polymer Networks And Engineering Polyesters, Sumod Kalakkunnath Jan 2007

Viscoelastic Relaxation Characteristics Of Rubbery Polymer Networks And Engineering Polyesters, Sumod Kalakkunnath

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The relaxation characteristics of rubbery poly(ethylene oxide) [PEO] networks have been investigated as a function of network composition and architecture via dynamic mechanical analysis and broadband dielectric spectroscopy. A series of model networks were prepared via UV photopolymerization using poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate [PEGDA] as crosslinker: variations in crosslink density were achieved either by the introduction of water in the prepolymerization reaction mixture, or by the inclusion of mono-functional acrylate such as poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate [PEGMEA] or poly(ethylene glycol) acrylate [PEGA]. Copolymerization with mono-functional acrylate led to the insertion of flexible branches along the network backbone, and the corresponding …

Integrated Approach To The Superplastic Forming Of Magnesium Alloys, Fadi K. Abu-Farha Jan 2007

Integrated Approach To The Superplastic Forming Of Magnesium Alloys, Fadi K. Abu-Farha

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The economical and environmental issues associated with fossil fuels have been urging the automotive industry to cut the fuel consumption and exhaust emission levels, mainly by reducing the weight of vehicles. However, customers increasing demands for safer, more powerful and luxurious vehicles have been adding more weight to the various categories of vehicles, even the smallest ones. Leading car manufacturers have shown that significant weight reduction, yet satisfying the growing demands of customers, would not be feasible without the extensive use of lightweight materials. Magnesium is the lightest constructional metal on earth, offering a great potential for weight-savings. However, magnesium …

Instructional Communication Matters: A Test Of Knowledge Acqusition Theory (Kat) From A Message-Oriented Receiver Perspective, Robert Joseph Trader

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation encourages adoption of a message-oriented receiver perspective when developing new instructional communication theories and proposes a causal-process model derived from Knowledge Acquisition Theory to demonstrate how this perspective can be used to predict student cognitive learning outcomes. Three hypotheses are generated to test the propositions of the derived model. The first hypothesis seeks to determine which dimensions of instructional message clarity and course content relevance best predict student interactions with instructional content. The second hypothesis predicts that student self-reported knowledge gains are a function of student interactions with content. The third hypothesis predicts that a significant proportion of …

Organizational Performance, Turnover, And Human Resource Management: Focusing On Municipal Police Services, Yongbeom Hur Jan 2007

Organizational Performance, Turnover, And Human Resource Management: Focusing On Municipal Police Services, Yongbeom Hur

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Regardless of whether organizations are in the private sector or in the public sector, there is a general agreement that human resources are critical to keeping organizations effective as well as maintaining a high level of organizational performance. While more serious effort has been made to empirically examine how human resources influence organizational performance (e.g., studies about turnover consequences, studies about the relationship between human resource management practices and organizational performance) in the private sector, it is rare to find similar empirical studies in the public sector partly because it is hard to define public organizational performance. In my dissertation, …

Requirements Tracing Using Information Retrieval, Senthil Karthikeyan Sundaram Jan 2007

Requirements Tracing Using Information Retrieval, Senthil Karthikeyan Sundaram

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

It is important to track how a requirement changes throughout the software lifecycle. Each requirement should be validated during and at the end of each phase of the software lifecycle. It is common to build traceability matrices to demonstrate that requirements are satisfied by the design. Traceability matrices are needed in various tasks in the software development process. Unfortunately, developers and designers do not always build traceability matrices or maintain traceability matrices to the proper level of detail. Therefore, traceability matrices are often built after-the-fact. The generation of traceability matrices is a time consuming, error prone, and mundane process. Most …

Functionalization Of Fluorinated Surfactant Templated Silica, Gifty Osei-Prempeh Jan 2007

Functionalization Of Fluorinated Surfactant Templated Silica, Gifty Osei-Prempeh

Surfactant templating provides for the synthesis of ordered mesoporous silica and the opportunity to tailor the pore size, pore structure, particle morphology and surface functionality of the silica through the selection of synthesis conditions and surfactant template. This work extends the synthesis of nanostructured silica using fluorinated surfactant templates to the synthesis of organic/inorganic composites. The effect of fluorinated surfactant templates (C6F13C2H4NC5H5Cl, C8F17C2H4NC5H5Cl and C10F21C2H4NC5H5Cl), which have highly hydrophobic fluorocarbon tails, on functional group incorporation, accessibility, and silica textural properties is examined and compared to properties of hydrocarbon surfactant (C16H33N(CH3)3Br, CTAB) templated silica. Hydrocarbon (vinyl, n-decyl and 3-aminopropyl) and fluorocarbon …

Detoxification Of Selected Chloro-Organics By Oxidation Technique Using Chelate Modified Fenton Reaction, Yongchao Li Jan 2007

Detoxification Of Selected Chloro-Organics By Oxidation Technique Using Chelate Modified Fenton Reaction, Yongchao Li

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The use of hydroxyl radical based reaction (Fenton reaction) for the destruction of organic pollutants has been widely reported in the literature. However, the low pH requirement and rapid hydrogen peroxide consumption rate make the application of conventional Fenton reaction difficult for in-situ treatment. In this study, we conducted a modified Fenton reaction by introducing a chelating agent into the reaction system that could prevent Fe(OH)3 (s) precipitation even at a neutral pH condition and reduce the H2O2 consumption rate by controlling the Fe2+ concentration. A chelating agent (mono-chelate or poly-chelate) combines with Fe2+ or Fe3+ to form stable metal-chelate …
