Semi-Autonomous Control Of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles, Stephen C. Martin Jan 2007

Semi-Autonomous Control Of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles, Stephen C. Martin

Link Foundation Ocean Engineering and Instrumentation Fellowship Reports

The goal of my graduate research is to address two engineering science problems whose solution will enable Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) to routinely perform semi-autonomous missions presently considered impractical or infeasible. I am pursuing this research under the direction of Professor Whitcomb in the Dynamical Systems and Controls Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University, and in collaboration with the faculty of the Deep Submergence Laboratory of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI).

In the last decade AUVs have begun to complement Human Occupied Vehicles (HOVs) and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) as effective platforms for oceanographic exploration. HOVs and ROVs are highly …

Salt And Ph Tunable Resist Patterns On Polyelectrolyte Multilayers, Christina Chan, Ilsoon Lee, Srivatsan Kidambi Jan 2007

Salt And Ph Tunable Resist Patterns On Polyelectrolyte Multilayers, Christina Chan, Ilsoon Lee, Srivatsan Kidambi

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

A method for selectively removing a resist material from the polycationic surface of a polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) ?lm, Without disturbing adhering interactions between the cationic ?lm surface and bound biomaterials such as cells, proteins, and nucleic acids. The resist material is one that that inhibits or prevents the further deposition of cells or other biomaterial; it thus masks the cationic surface from application of biomaterials. In one embodiment the resist material is a carboxy functional oxyalkylene oligomer. It is removed by exposing the ?lm containing the bound biomaterial and the bound resist material to a pH below 4.5, and/or to …

Cell Adhesion On Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Coated Polydimethylsiloxane Surfaces With Varying Topographies, Srivatsan Kidambi, Natasha Udpa, Stacey A. Schroeder, Robert Findlan, Ilsoon Lee, Christina Chan

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

This article demonstrates that the micro-topography of the surface with respect to the pattern size and pitch influences cell adhesion and proliferation. Extensive research has shown the dependence of cell proliferation on substrate chemistry, but the influence of substrate topography on cell attachment has only recently been appreciated. To evaluate the effect of substrate physical properties (i.e., periodic microstructures) on cell attachment and morphology, we compared the response of several cell types (fibroblasts, HeLa, and primary hepatocytes) cultured on various polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) patterns. PDMS has been used as an artificial construct to mimic biological structures. Although PDMS is widely used …

This shift from defending and reacting to creating and envisioning requires a more engaged organizational role for the lawyer. The lawyer is now expected to do more than translate the organization/community's grievance into discreet legal frameworks and discourse---e.g., a civil rights violation, a nuisance, participatory right, etc. The lawyer now intervenes in negotiations from which the organization or community has been excluded. This new role requires a shifting, flexible mix of skills and a more dynamic interaction with the organization and its varied functions-policy, community education, lobbying, and organizing. This new role is what we call "integrative lawyering," an emergent …

Functional Interplay Between The B-Box 2 And The B30.2(Spry) Domains Of Trim5Α, Xi Ling, Byeongwoon Song, Shi-Hua Xiang, Joseph Sodroski Jan 2007

Functional Interplay Between The B-Box 2 And The B30.2(Spry) Domains Of Trim5Α, Xi Ling, Byeongwoon Song, Shi-Hua Xiang, Joseph Sodroski

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

The retroviral restriction factors, TRIM5α and TRIMCyp, consist of RING and B-box 2 domains separated by a coiled coil from carboxy-terminal domains. These carboxy-terminal domains (the B30.2(SPRY) domain in TRIM5α and the cyclophilin A domain in TRIMCyp) recognize the retroviral capsid. Here we show that some B-box 2 changes in TRIM5α, but not in TRIMCyp, resulted in decreased human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) capsid binding. The phenotypic effects of these B-box 2 changes on the restriction of retroviral infection depended on the potency of restriction and the affinity of the TRIM5α interaction with the viral capsid, two properties specified by the …

Passive Aerobic Treatment Of Net-Alkaline, Iron-Laden Drainage From A Flooded Underground Anthracite Mine, Pennsylvania, Usa, Charles A. Cravotta Iii

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

This report evaluates the results of a continuous 4.5-day laboratory aeration experiment and the first year of passive, aerobic treatment of abandoned mine drainage (AMD) from a typical flooded underground anthracite mine in eastern Pennsylvania, USA. During 1991–2006, the AMD source, locally known as the Otto Discharge, had flows from 20 to 270 L/s (median 92 L/s) and water quality that was consistently suboxic (median 0.9 mg/L O2) and circumneutral (pH ~ 6.0; net alkalinity >10) with moderate concentrations of dissolved iron and manganese and low concentrations of dissolved aluminum (medians of 11, 2.2, and <0.2 mg/L, respectively). In 2001, the laboratory aeration experiment demonstrated rapid oxidation of ferrous iron (Fe2+) without …

Characterization Of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Monomeric And Trimeric Gp120 Glycoproteins Stabilized In The Cd4-Bound State: Antigenicity, Biophysics, And Immunogenicity, Barna Dey, Marie Pancera, Krisha Svehla, Yuuei Shu, Shi-Hua Xiang, Jeffrey Vainshtein, Yuxing Li, Joseph Sodroski, Peter D. Kwong, John R. Mascola, Richard Wyatt Jan 2007

Characterization Of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Monomeric And Trimeric Gp120 Glycoproteins Stabilized In The Cd4-Bound State: Antigenicity, Biophysics, And Immunogenicity, Barna Dey, Marie Pancera, Krisha Svehla, Yuuei Shu, Shi-Hua Xiang, Jeffrey Vainshtein, Yuxing Li, Joseph Sodroski, Peter D. Kwong, John R. Mascola, Richard Wyatt

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 exterior gp120 envelope glycoprotein is highly flexible, and this flexibility may contribute to the inability of monomeric gp120 immunogens to elicit broadly neutralizing antibodies. We previously showed that an S375W modification of a critical interfacial cavity central to the primary receptor binding site, the Phe43 cavity, stabilizes gp120 into the CD4-bound state. However, the immunological effects of this cavity-altering replacement were never tested. Subsequently, we screened other mutations that, along with the S375W alteration, might further stabilize the CD4-bound state. Here, we define a selected second cavity-altering replacement, T257S, and analyze the double mutations …

Latin Hypercube Approach To Estimate Uncertainty In Ground Water Vulnerability, Jason J. Gurdak, John E. Mccray, Geoffrey Thyne, Sharon L. Qi Jan 2007

Latin Hypercube Approach To Estimate Uncertainty In Ground Water Vulnerability, Jason J. Gurdak, John E. Mccray, Geoffrey Thyne, Sharon L. Qi

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

A methodology is proposed to quantify prediction uncertainty associated with ground water vulnerability models that were developed through an approach that coupled multivariate logistic regression with a geographic information system (GIS). This method uses Latin hypercube sampling (LHS) to illustrate the propagation of input error and estimate uncertainty associated with the logistic regression predictions of ground water vulnerability. Central to the proposed method is the assumption that prediction uncertainty in ground water vulnerability models is a function of input error propagation from uncertainty in the estimated logistic regression model coefficients (model error) and the values of explanatory variables represented in …

Sexual Selection Drives Speciation In An Amazonian Frog, Kathryn E. Boul, W. Chris Funk, Catherine R. Darst, David C. Cannatella, Michael J. Ryan Jan 2007

Sexual Selection Drives Speciation In An Amazonian Frog, Kathryn E. Boul, W. Chris Funk, Catherine R. Darst, David C. Cannatella, Michael J. Ryan

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

One proposed mechanism of speciation is divergent sexual selection, whereby divergence in female preferences and male signals results in behavioural isolation. Despite the appeal of this hypothesis, evidence for it remains inconclusive. Here, we present several lines of evidence that sexual selection is driving behavioural isolation and speciation among populations of an Amazonian frog (Physalaemus petersi). First, sexual selection has promoted divergence in male mating calls and female preferences for calls between neighbouring populations, resulting in strong behavioural isolation. Second, phylogenetic analysis indicates that populations have become fixed for alternative call types several times throughout the species’ range, …

Population Viability Analysis Of Lower Missouri River Shovelnose Sturgeon With Initial Application To The Pallid Sturgeon, P. G. Bajer, M. L. Wildhaber Jan 2007

Population Viability Analysis Of Lower Missouri River Shovelnose Sturgeon With Initial Application To The Pallid Sturgeon, P. G. Bajer, M. L. Wildhaber

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Demographic models for the shovelnose (Scaphirhynchus platorynchus) and pallid (S. albus) sturgeons in the Lower Missouri River were developed to conduct sensitivity analyses for both populations. Potential effects of increased fishing mortality on the shovelnose sturgeon were also evaluated. Populations of shovelnose and pallid sturgeon were most sensitive to age-0 mortality rates as well as mortality rates of juveniles and young adults. Overall, fecundity was a less sensitive parameter. However, increased fecundity effectively balanced higher mortality among sensitive age classes in both populations. Management that increases population-level fecundity and improves survival of age-0, juveniles, and young …

Characterizing Stand- Replacing Harvest And Fire Disturbance Patches In A Forested Landscape: A Case Study From Cooney Ridge, Montana, Andrew T. Hudak, Penelope Morgan, Michael J. Bobbitt, Leigh B. Lentile Jan 2007

Characterizing Stand- Replacing Harvest And Fire Disturbance Patches In A Forested Landscape: A Case Study From Cooney Ridge, Montana, Andrew T. Hudak, Penelope Morgan, Michael J. Bobbitt, Leigh B. Lentile

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

In this chapter, we present a case study intended to help crystallize for many readers, through use of an illustrative example, some of the important concepts developed in the preceding chapters. From an understanding of forest successional and disturbance processes, both natural and anthropogenic (Linke et al., Chapter 1, this volume), research questions were developed to compare and contrast the landscape patterns generated from fire and harvest disturbance. Remotely sense data are demonstrated as an appropriate source of relevant information (Coops et al., Chapter 2, this volume), enabling the applications presented for the utilization of change detection approaches for mapping …

Microbial Sulfate Reduction And Metal Attenuation In Ph 4 Acid Mine Water, Clinton D. Church, Richard T. Wilkin, Charles N. Alpers, Robert O. Rye, R. Blaine Mccleskey Jan 2007

Microbial Sulfate Reduction And Metal Attenuation In Ph 4 Acid Mine Water, Clinton D. Church, Richard T. Wilkin, Charles N. Alpers, Robert O. Rye, R. Blaine Mccleskey

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Sediments recovered from the flooded mine workings of the Penn Mine, a Cu-Zn mine abandoned since the early 1960s, were cultured for anaerobic bacteria over a range of pH (4.0 to 7.5). The molecular biology of sediments and cultures was studied to determine whether sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were active in moderately acidic conditions present in the underground mine workings. Here we document multiple, independent analyses and show evidence that sulfate reduction and associated metal attenuation are occurring in the pH-4 mine environment. Waterchemistry analyses of the mine water reveal: (1) preferential complexation and precipitation by H2S of Cu …

How Will Global Climate Change Affect Parasite-Host Assemblages?, Eric P. Hoberg, Daniel R. Brooks Jan 2007

How Will Global Climate Change Affect Parasite-Host Assemblages?, Eric P. Hoberg, Daniel R. Brooks

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Parasites are integral components of the biosphere. Host switching correlated with events of episodic climate change is ubiquitous in evolutionary and ecological time. Global climate change produces ecological perturbations, which cause geographical and phenological shifts, and alteration in the dynamics of parasite transmission, increasing the potential for host switching. The intersection of climate change with evolutionary conservative aspects of host specificity and transmission dynamics, called ecological fitting, permits emergence of parasites and diseases without evolutionary changes in their capacity for host utilization.

The Search Interest In Contract, Joshua Fairfield Jan 2007

The Search Interest In Contract, Joshua Fairfield

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Parties often do not negotiate for contract terms. Instead, parties search for the products, terms, and contractual counterparties they desire. The traditional negotiation-centered view of contract leads courts to try to determine the meaning of the parties where no meaning was negotiated and to waste time determining the benefits of bargains that were never struck. Further, while courts have ample tools to validate specifically negotiated contract terms, they lack the tools to respond to searched-for terms. Although the law and literature have long recognized that there is a disconnect between the legal fictions of negotiation and the reality of contracting …
