Reservoir Characterization Of The Broom Creek Formation For Carbon Dioxide Sequestration, Justin J. Kringstad

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

This engineering design is aimed at providing a thorough investigation on the potential of carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration in the Williston Basin’s Broom Creek Formation. The objective of the design is to characterize the Broom Creek’s reservoir properties and provide detailed results of CO2 sequestration capacity, plume migration, and safety level. The methodology used to obtain results is an incorporation of geology, reservoir engineering, and injection operations. The reservoir simulation operations were conducted using Schlumberger’s ECLIPSE (Schlumberger, 2006).

Levee Stabilization Design For Flood Control In East Grand Forks, Minnesota, Heather N. Lammers Jan 2007

Levee Stabilization Design For Flood Control In East Grand Forks, Minnesota, Heather N. Lammers

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

This design investigates stabilization methods for a failing levee system using the method of slices. An assumed failure surface was drawn and divided into vertical slices, where the forces acting on each slice were analyzed. If the forces available to resist movement were greater than the forces driving movement, the slope was considered stable (Rahn 1996). A factor of safety was then calculated by dividing the forces resisting movement by the forces driving movement. A factor of safety of 0.987 was initially obtained, which meant failure at the toe of the embankment was occurring. With the addition of a 4 …

Alternative And Renewable Energy, Emil Opitz Jan 2007

Alternative And Renewable Energy, Emil Opitz

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

The world is going to run out of fossil fuels in the near future. An estimated one to two trillion barrels of oil is believed recoverable using today’s technologies. This amount of oil will last the world no more than 70 years, and perhaps only half that long. A system of alternative and renewable fuels is our only solution to this problem. With proper action and development, a worldwide energy crisis will be avoided.

We have an abundance of renewable and alternative energy sources that are not currently being used, enough to supply almost all of our energy needs. Wind …

In Silico Analysis Of Terpene Synthase Genes In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Sam Zwenger, Chhandak Basu Jan 2007

In Silico Analysis Of Terpene Synthase Genes In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Sam Zwenger, Chhandak Basu

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Terpenes are defense chemicals found in wide groups of plants. Terpenoids play a large role in plant development and stress response. The terpene synthase family comprises a diverse set of genes, all which contribute to production of terpenoids. We have used tools of bioinformatics and performed an in silico analysis of developmental and tissue specific terpene synthase gene expression in Arabidopsis thaliana, as well as those expressed due to biotic and abiotic environmental stimuli. Using software tools from Genevestigator, a powerful microarray analyzer, we used multiple tool sets to better understand terpene synthase expression in Arabidopsis, which will hopefully open …

Optimization Of Porcine Buccal Mucosa For In Vitro Evaluation, Upendra D. Kulkarni Jan 2007

Optimization Of Porcine Buccal Mucosa For In Vitro Evaluation, Upendra D. Kulkarni

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Porcine buccal mucosa has been extensively used as in vitro model to study the permeability of drugs and assess their potential to deliver through buccal route. Porcine buccal mucosa is found to be very similar to human oral mucosa in structure and function. However, the in vitro permeation studies across porcine buccal mucosa show high variability which is mostly due to the various experimental and biological variables that are often overlooked while conducting such studies.

The precise nature of the permeability barrier offered by the various tissue layers of buccal mucosa was investigated in this study. It was observed that …

College Students And Voter Mobilization Campaigns : A Grounded Communication Theory For Increasing Political Efficacy And Involvement, Vanessa M. Robinson Jan 2007

College Students And Voter Mobilization Campaigns : A Grounded Communication Theory For Increasing Political Efficacy And Involvement, Vanessa M. Robinson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study examined which channels, messages, and sources were most effective in increasing political involvement among college students. Political participation among college students has decreased in every election since eighteen year- olds were given the right to vote. Numerous campaigns targeted to increase political participation among college students have been implemented but there is no evidence that these campaigns have been effective.

This study developed a grounded theory for increasing political participation among college students l;!ased on several focus group interactions. Students were asked to report on which channels, messages and sources they currently received political information from and were …

Soil Fertility And Productivity Relationships In Rice Production System, Bangladesh, S Rahman, Rj Parkinson

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This paper presents an econometric analysis of the influence of soil fertility status on productivity and resource use in rice production utilizing survey data from 21 villages in three agro-ecological regions of Bangladesh. Detailed crop husbandry input-output data were collected from 380 paddy rice (Oryza sativa) farmers. Data collected included fertilizer, pesticide, labour, animal power services, irrigation, farm capital assets and rice yield. The soil fertility status in each region was determined by analysis of soil organic carbon, available nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium concentration. Analysis was based on a profit function, where the selected soil fertility parameters were incorporated as …

Port Competitiveness In North East Asia : An Integrated Fuzzy Approach To Expert Evaluations, Gi-Tae Yeo Jan 2007

Port Competitiveness In North East Asia : An Integrated Fuzzy Approach To Expert Evaluations, Gi-Tae Yeo

Plymouth Business School Theses

Despite the fact that the Northeast Asia (NEA) region, which had four of the top five and 20 of the top 30 container ports in the world in 2003, can be regarded as holding a central position in liner shipping and the handling of container cargo volumes, very little research has been done into the evaluation of its port competitiveness (EPC). For this reason, the EPC in NEA can be regarded as a problematic and urgent issue to be solved, and worthy of academic attention. From this aspect, this research set out to attempt to address the above issue by …

The Adoption Of Internet Technologies By Independent Hotels In The Uk, Wai Mun Lim Jan 2007

The Adoption Of Internet Technologies By Independent Hotels In The Uk, Wai Mun Lim

Plymouth Business School Theses

The growth of the technology and its range of possible uses have made it a necessity for independent hoteliers to examine their use of the internet, specifically its effectiveness for marketing and distribution purposes. It is widely recognised that the independent hotel sector makes up the bulk of the hotel industry in the UK and often do not have the resources or desire to keep up with new technologies. This study scrutinizes, evaluates and establishes the factors that influence the decision to adopt a range of internet technologies for marketing and distribution within the UK Independent hotel sector. The conceptual …

Socio-Economic Aspects Of Commercial Ports And Wharves In Southwest England: A Grounded Theory Approach To Regional Competitiveness, Sarah Tuck Jan 2007

Socio-Economic Aspects Of Commercial Ports And Wharves In Southwest England: A Grounded Theory Approach To Regional Competitiveness, Sarah Tuck

Plymouth Business School Theses

The Southwest Region, as defined by the SW Regional Development Agency, forms an extended peninsula with a coastline of 1,020 km, the longest of any region in England. All along this coastline are fishing ports, commercial ports, small wharves, closed ports, ferry ports and leisure ports. Amongst the smallest are a dozen tidal ports, tiny harbours and rocky wharfs that still maintain a commercial trade of local and environmental significance. According to most theories of port development these ports should close, being forced out of business by larger, more efficient ports. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with fifteen people who were …
