Architecture Vs. Art: The Aesthetics Of Art Museum Design[1], Larry Shiner Jan 2007

Architecture Vs. Art: The Aesthetics Of Art Museum Design[1], Larry Shiner

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Many art critics have complained that the most dramatic art museum designs of the last decade have upstaged or interfered with the art within. This essay examines eight contemporary cases before drawing some lessons for art museum design, and ends by setting the architecture vs. art problem in the context of the philosophy of architecture, focusing on the issues of function and symbolism.

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

The most important rule of all is the last sentence of [FRCP] 1, which provides that the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure ‘shall be construed to secure the just, speedy, and inexpensive determination of every action.’ It is this command that gives all the other rules life and meaning and timbre in the realist world of the trial court.

Thermal Effectiveness Characteristics Of Low Approach Indirect Evaporative Cooling Systems In Buildings, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn Jan 2007

Thermal Effectiveness Characteristics Of Low Approach Indirect Evaporative Cooling Systems In Buildings, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn

Articles

Meteorological enthalpy analysis of temperate and maritime climates above latitude 45°N suggests that the water-side evaporative cooling technique has considerable unrealised potential with contemporary “high temperature” building cooling systems—such as chilled ceilings and displacement ventilation. As low approach conditions are the key to exploiting the cooling potential of the ambient air, thermal performance at such conditions needs to be investigated. To address the research issues, an industrial scale test rig, based on a low approach open cooling tower and plate heat exchanger and designed to maximise evaporative cooling potential, has been constructed. The thermal effectiveness of such systems (as a …

The Embodied Transport Energy Analysis Of Imported Wood Pellets, Aidan Duffy, Michael Conroy Jan 2007

The Embodied Transport Energy Analysis Of Imported Wood Pellets, Aidan Duffy, Michael Conroy

Conference Papers

The Irish Government has recently introduced a series of capital grants to boost the uptake of domestic wood-pellet technologies in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These have proved popular and have encouraged a significant number of people to switch from gas- and oil-fired boilers to the cleaner fuel. The demand for wood-pellets has, however, greatly exceeded the national capacity for production. The market for wood pellets elsewhere in Europe is also tight and, consequently, a large proportion of Irish pellets are sourced in Canada. This presents possible problems: the carbon emissions associated with long-distance transport may significantly offset the …

Ray-Trace Modelling Of Reflectors For Quantum Dot Solar Concentrators, Manus Kennedy, Sarah Mccormack, John Doran, Brian Norton Jan 2007

Ray-Trace Modelling Of Reflectors For Quantum Dot Solar Concentrators, Manus Kennedy, Sarah Mccormack, John Doran, Brian Norton

Conference Papers

Quantum Dot Solar Concentrators (QDSCs) are static, non-imaging concentrators which do not require expensive solar tracking and concentrate both direct and diffuse light. Optical efficiencies (ηopt) and concentration ratios (C) of a single plate QDSC were calculated by Monte-Carlo ray-trace modelling. Consideration of reflection, refraction, quantum dot (QD) photon emission and absorption and light attenuation in the device matrix were included in the analysis. In this paper, the effect of placing plane and diffuse reflectors at the rear surface was analyzed. Mirrors with a structured surface (saw-tooth shaped) were also modelled and the effect of each reflector type on C …

Barium Strontium Titanate Films For Tunable Microwave And Acoustic Wave Applications, Venkataramanan Gurumurthy Jan 2007

Barium Strontium Titanate Films For Tunable Microwave And Acoustic Wave Applications, Venkataramanan Gurumurthy

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The composition-dependent Curie temperature and bias-dependant dielectric permittivity of Barium Strontium Titanate (BST) makes it very attractive for tunable application in the RF/Microwave regime. In this research work, the performance of BST varactors fabricated on the conventional Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si bottom electrode stack were compared with those fabricated using chemical vapor deposited Nanocrystalline Diamond (NCD) as the diffusion barrier layer instead of SiO2. The varactors fabricated on NCD films displayed much better symmetry in capacitance-voltage behavior and better overall quality factors than varactors fabricated on SiO2. The improvement in performance can be attributed to existence of stable interfaces in the devices fabricated …

Voice Recognition System Based On Intra-Modal Fusion And Accent Classification, Srikanth Mangayyagari

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Speaker or voice recognition is the task of automatically recognizing people from their speech signals. This technique makes it possible to use uttered speech to verify the speaker's identity and control access to secured services. Surveillance, counter-terrorism and homeland security department can collect voice data from telephone conversation without having to access to any other biometric dataset. In this type of scenario it would be beneficial if the confidence level of authentication is high. Other applicable areas include online transactions, database access services, information services, security control for confidential information areas, and remote access to computers. Speaker recognition systems, even though …

Population Outlook For The Portland-Vancouver Metropolitan Region, George C. Hough Jr., Amy Koski Jan 2007

Population Outlook For The Portland-Vancouver Metropolitan Region, George C. Hough Jr., Amy Koski

Institute of Metropolitan Studies Publications

While many people both inside and outside Oregon envision the state as a place of picturesque coastal bluffs, mountain ranges, the Columbia River Gorge, and oldgrowth forests, the population is primarily urban. It has been for many decades. In 2000, three-quarters of Oregon’s 3.4 million residents lived in towns and cities. Almost one-half of Oregon’s population lived in the metropolitan Portland area. This paper offers an overview of population dynamics in the Portland-Vancouver metropolitan area, which includes five of Oregon’s thirty-six counties–Clackamas, Columbia, Multnomah, Washington, and Yamhill–and Clark County in the state of Washington. It refers to the “metropolitan Portland-Vancouver …

Microclimates In The Portland-Vancouver Regional Economy, Sheila A. Martin Jan 2007

Microclimates In The Portland-Vancouver Regional Economy, Sheila A. Martin

Institute of Metropolitan Studies Publications

Portland-Vancouver operates as a regional market for labor, housing, entertainment, and a broad range of goods and services. The 2006 Regional Business Plan was developed with the understanding that each part of our region is linked economically and that the economic performance of each community depends on the success of its neighbors. Nevertheless, the region is not economically homogeneous. Each community demonstrates specific industry concentrations. These concentrations are driven by factors that encourage similar or linked businesses to locate near one another. And population demographics vary, affecting each sub-region's economic performance as our workforce travels throughout the region to find …

Modeling The Dynamics Of Tritrophic Population Interactions, Andrew Paul Gutierrez, Johann Baumgärtner Jan 2007

Modeling The Dynamics Of Tritrophic Population Interactions, Andrew Paul Gutierrez, Johann Baumgärtner

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Introduction Increasingly, population modeling and systems analysis are being used to examine the complex issues that are at the heart of CP/IPM (crop production and integrated pest management) and biological control. The design of economically sound and sustainable crop management strategies requires a thorough understanding of the whole production system including arthropod pests, pathogens, and weeds. More than three decades ago, Huffaker and Croft (1976) stressed the need to rely on systems analysis and interdisciplinary collaboration to accomplish this task. Soon the question arose as to how mathematical techniques employed in the analysis of physical systems could be adapted to …
