ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after one year of unprotected sexual intercourse. Some cases of male infertility are due to a specific cause whereas others are due to less obvious etiologies and results in less drastic changes in semen parameters. Arylsulfatase A, arylsulfatase B and alkaline proteinase have not been studied adequately in relation to male infertility. The concept of deracialization gained notoriety following elections held in November of 1989. During these elections, a number of African-American candidates captured victories in majority-white electoral jurisdictions, leading McConnick to coin this Election Day as "Black Tuesday." Among those elected on "Black Tuesday" include: L. Douglas Wilder as governor of Virginia, David Dinkins as mayor of New York City, Norman Rice as mayor of Seattle and Chester Jenkins, mayor of Durham, North Carolina. In this article we systematically examine the deracialization construct/strategy and the potentially damaging impact that such a strategy might pose on the black community.

Impacts Of Climate Warming And Permafrost Thaw On The Riverine Transport Of Nitrogen And Phosphorus To The Kara Sea, Karen E. Frey, James W. Mcclelland, Robert M. Holmes, Laurence G. Smith

Geography

Measurements of nitrogen and phosphorus (N and P) concentrations from previously unstudied streams and rivers throughout west Siberia suggest that climate warming and/or associated permafrost thaw will likely amplify the transport of N and P to the Kara Sea and adjacent Arctic Ocean. We present concentrations of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), ammonium (NH4-N), nitrate (NO3-N), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), and total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) from 96 streams and rivers within the Ob'-Iriysh, Nadym, and Pur river drainage basins. The sampled sites span ∼106 km2, a large climatic gradient (∼55°N-68°N), and include 41 cold, permafrost-influenced and 55 warm, permafrost-free watersheds. Concentrations …

The gain and phase dynamics of InAs∕GaAs quantum dot amplifiers are studied using single and two-color heterodyne pump probe spectroscopy. The relaxation of the wetting layer carrier density is shown to have a strong effect on the phase dynamics of both ground and excited state transients, while having a much weaker effect on the gain dynamics. In addition, the dynamical alpha factor may also display a constant value after an initial transient. Such behavior is strongly encouraging for reduced pattern effect operation in high speed optical networks.

The other aggravator, murder to receive money, was successfully challenged as violating SCR 250(4)(c) requirements.

A number of employers, business consortia, and public purchasers are promoting "value-based purchasing" as a way to improve the quality of patient care. Some purchasers are using publicly available information on health plan and provider performance to make their health plan and provider choices, while others are using their market power to drive improvements in patient care and safety. This article examines six key strategies used by purchasers.

In the final stages of the bacterial growth cycle, daughter cells must be released from one another by cleaving the shared peptidoglycan cell wall that separates them. Although enzymes capable of cleaving bonds in the murein sacculus are ubiquitous among the bacteria, the physiological roles of only a few of these enzymes are clear. The peptidoglycan-specific amidases play an important role in cleaving the septum to release daughter cells after cell division in Escherichia coli. E. coli has three amidases dedicated to this task: AmiA, AmiB and AmiC. These enzymes remove side chains from the peptidoglycan by hydrolyzing the bond …

From 1700 to 1731, Mary Davys wrote six novels, two plays, and a poem. These works reveal her abiding concern with gender relations, moral behavior, and social order. Davys's work is an articulate critique of social and sexual politics of late Stuart and early Hanoverian England. Few scholars have traced the development of her gender ideology and this aspect of her work remains underexamined. Also, the author's early years in Ireland have not been closely considered even as doing so illuminates the shaping of her world view. Bureacratizing Ethics: Institutional Review Boards And Participatory Research, Deborah Martin

Geography

This paper provides a brief history of regulatory research ethics, as embodied in Institutional Review Boards in the United States. The purpose is to foster common disciplinary understanding of the origin and purpose of IRBs, and to identify the core conflict between the philosophies of participatory action research and regulatory ethics. That conflict centers on the contradictory language and associated understandings of research "subjects" and "participants". I suggest a need for more disciplinary engagements around this conflict, to foster more open ethical debates and competencies among geographers. © Deborah G. A High Resolution Satellite-Only Grace-Based Mean Dynamic Topography Of The South Atlantic Ocean, Marcio L. Vianna, Viviane V. Menezes, D. Chambers

A new filtering method based on Singular Spectrum Analysis has been devised to extract high resolution (0.25° × 0.25° grid) satellite-only Mean Dynamic Ocean Topography(MDT) constructed by differencing of the GGM02 GRACE Gravity Model from the GSFCMSS00 Mean Sea Surface. This data-adaptive interpolation-type filter is adequate for the finite domain MDT processing since it minimizes smoothing and does not lose boundary points. It is applied to the computation of two new MDTs and MDT-derived mean geostrophic circulation maps of the South Atlantic region from 15°N to 50°S. A series of process-oriented numerical simulations is carried out in order to evaluate the relative role of locally generated residual flow and overtides on net sediment transport over linear sandbanks. The idealized bathymetry and forcing are similar to those present in the Norfolk Sandbanks, North Sea. The importance of bottom drag parameterization and bank orientation with respect to the ambient flow is examined in terms of residual flow and overtide generation, and subsequent sediment transport implications are discussed. Control measures are currently focused on community participation in control of the vector Aedes aegypti and larval source reduction. Selenium is a trace element with significant biomedical potential. It is essential in mammals due to its occurrence in several proteins in the form of selenocysteine (Sec). One of the most abundant mamma¬lian Sec-containing proteins is selenoprotein W (SelW). This protein of unknown function has a broad expression pattern and contains a candidate CXXU (where U represents Sec) redox motif. Here, we re¬port the solution structure of the Sec¹³ →Cys variant of mouse SelW determined through high resolution NMR spectroscopy.
