The Family Fuselloviridae : Diversity And Replication Of A Hyperthermic Virus Infecting The Archaeon Genus Sulfolobus, Adam Joseph Clore Dec 2007

The Family Fuselloviridae : Diversity And Replication Of A Hyperthermic Virus Infecting The Archaeon Genus Sulfolobus, Adam Joseph Clore

Dissertations and Theses

The virus family Fuselloviridae infects the hyperthermophilic and acidophilic Crenarchaeon genus Sulfolobus and has been isolated from terrestrial hotsprings worldwide. Two previously uncharacterized Fuselloviruses, SSV-13 and SSV-L1, were isolated and sequenced and are compared to the five fully sequenced viruses presently in the public databases. Conserved promoters in all viruses and similar putative origins of replication suggest that these viruses use a transcriptional and genomic replication program similar to the relatively well-characterized SSV1. Pairwise comparisons of conserved genes in the seven virus genomes show that, like its host Sulfolobus, these viruses' genetic divergence correlates with geographic separation. Genome rearrangements, horizontal …

Registered Dietitian Dress And The Effect Of Dietitian Dress On Perceived Professionalism, Connie Lynn Packer Dec 2007

Registered Dietitian Dress And The Effect Of Dietitian Dress On Perceived Professionalism, Connie Lynn Packer

Theses and Dissertations

People use others' dress to make assumptions, including how they believe the wearer will behave. Observers then adjust their behavior in response to the anticipated behavior of the wearer. Physician or nurse dress affects the degree to which patients perceive the medical professional as confident, experienced, competent, mature, trustworthy, and professional. Dietitian dress has not been studied. Our purpose was to identify 1) the current level of formality of dress of registered dietitians (RD), 2) characteristics of dress codes, 3) the effect of RD dress on patient/client perceptions of professional traits, and 4) the level of formality at which an …

Solid Phase Crystallization Of Vanadium Dioxide Thin Films And Characterization Through Scanning Electron Microscopy, Felipe Rivera Dec 2007

Solid Phase Crystallization Of Vanadium Dioxide Thin Films And Characterization Through Scanning Electron Microscopy, Felipe Rivera

Theses and Dissertations

Crystalline films of vanadium dioxide were obtained through thermal annealing of amorphous vanadium dioxide thin films sputtered on silicon dioxide. An annealing process was found that yielded polycrystalline vanadium dioxide thin films, semi-continuous thin films, and films of isolated single-crystal particles. Orientation Imaging Microscopy (OIM) was used to characterize and study the phase and the orientation of the vanadium dioxide crystals obtained, as well as to diferentiate them from other vanadium oxide stoichiometries that may have formed during the annealing process. There was no evidence of any other vanadium oxides present in the prepared samples. Indexing of the crystals for …

Characterization Patterns Of Milcon Project Contract Modifications, Tyler K. Nielsen Dec 2007

Characterization Patterns Of Milcon Project Contract Modifications, Tyler K. Nielsen

Theses and Dissertations

Change orders are used by project managers of construction projects to account for unexpected changes in construction projects after the contract has been finalized. This can include everything from weather events to last minute changes requested by the user. This effort analyzed data from the U.S. Air Force Military Construction (MILCON) program to find the major causes of change orders in the hopes that the associated costs may be minimized and that the insight gained may improve project management efforts. The data was analyzed using means comparison testing through the nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test; the results were then ranked using the …

With its location along Bayboro Harbor, USF St. Petersburg offers many recreational and research opportunities to those with an interest in sailing. The University’s sailing team, headquartered on campus, uses the facilities of the Watercraft Office, Division of Student Affairs. These materials, collected by William “Steve” Lang during his tenure as advisor, illustrate the sailing competitions and activities of the sail team from the early 1990s through 2001. Additional accessions will build upon the materials in these records. The burgee was donated by J. M. “Sudsy” Tschiderer to complement the archival records.

Palestinian Health Institutions: Finding A Way Forward In The Wake Of The Second Intifada, Peter E. Hilsenrath, Karan P. Singh

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles

The strength of Hamas in Palestinian elections in early 2006 reshuffled the cards in the game of Middle East politics. Many astonished observers have sought an explanation for this political change. But the election result should not have been so surprising. Hamas has earned a reputation of clean governance and compassion for the poor, unlike the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority. Hamas has had a strong presence in the health sector which helped establish its legitimacy and popularity. This paper reviews bilateral and multilateral aid to Palestinians following the second intifada and argues that not enough was done by the international community …

Testimony Before The National Prison Rape Elimination Commission, The Role Of Courts And Litigation In Regulating Prison And Jail Prevention Of Sexual Violence And Misconduct, Margo Schlanger

Other Publications

I have been asked to focus my testimony on litigation and how it contributes to oversight of jails and prisons, in particular to incentivizing appropriate prison and jail supervisory practices and policies that minimize sexual misconduct and sexual violence behind bars. Litigation is an accountability mechanism operative in many spheres, of course, but whereas in most other areas of governmental activity, other such mechanisms have pride of place, we have as a polity largely failed to implement any other effective regulatory system to govern our burgeoning incarcerative apparatus. At least in many states prison and jail systems, litigation is one …

The Performance Of Dialysis Care: Routinization And Adaptation On The Floor, Laura L. Ellingson Dec 2007

The Performance Of Dialysis Care: Routinization And Adaptation On The Floor, Laura L. Ellingson

Gender and Sexuality Studies

Previous studies of communication in dialysis centers primarily focused on communication between nurses and patients. In this study, ethnographic methods were used to explore the dominant communication performances enacted by dialysis staff members, including registered nurses, patient care technicians, technical aides, a social worker, and a dietitian. Findings suggest a dialectic between extreme routinization of care and continual adaptation. The dominant routine involved repeating the same preparation, treatment, and discharge process 3 shifts per day, thrice weekly for each patient. At the same time, near-constant adjustments to scheduling, coordination of tasks, and problem solving were needed to maintain the performance …
