Large proportions of Western Australia's dryland farms suffer from water supply problems in the form of shortages, poor quality or combinations of these two factors ... A regional study for the North-eastern and Eastern Wheatbelt of Western Australia was undertaken. The base data used to develop water supply areas included soil type, landscape units, geology, hydrogeology, native vegetation and existing far water resource infrastructure.

The dopamine transporter (DAT) is a neuronal presynaptic transmembrane protein that clears released dopamine (DA) from the synaptic space, regulating the neurotransmitter concentration and availability, DAT and the related serotonin (SERT) and norepinephrine (NET) transporters belong to the SLC6 family of Na+ and CI- dependent symporters, and are major targets for the action of several drugs, including the psychostimulant cocaine. DAT is predicted to possess 12 transmembrane spanning domains (TMs), with both N- and C-termini located intracellularly. The research addressed and deliberated in this thesis refers to CMOS VLSI design approach of a Bluetooth™ receiver front-end. The performance outcome o f the design is verified with ADS™ RF simulation tool. Essentially the thesis offers an outline on the Bluetooth™ technology and its RF front-end component requirements. The relevant specifications of the designed front-end blocks are identified and are in concurrence with CMOS technology based topologies. This study examines tribal, Islamic, and national identity in Saudi Arabia and the relationship between identity and socio-political institutions as agencies of the Saudi state. The Western understanding of identity differs from the understanding of identity in Saudi Arabia. An examination of the Other in Saudi society is a critical component toward understanding the concept of identity in Saudi Arabia. The ability of state structures to use socio-political institutions as integrating mechanisms that provide assistance to communities is commendable. This study provides an exploratory investigation of the link between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Firm Competitive Advantage. It poses two primary research questions (1) What valuable and rare resource does the firm acquire through CSR? and 2) How does the firm's approach to stakeholder management influence its ability to protect and enhance the value of this resource? Nanoscale silica particles are functionalized and ultrasonically dispersed into a mixture of polyethylene glycol and ethanol, and then reinforced with Kevlar. The stab or puncture resistance of the flexible nanophased materials system supersedes recent advances made in this area. Through SEM scans, thermal and chemical analysis, it is evident that the functionalized nanoparticles offer multiple facets of resistance to penetration of a sharp impactor. The improvement in protection is traced to the formation of siloxane bonds during functionalization. The dissertation analyzes Christian rock that goes mainstream and aims to explain such a phenomenon within the contemporary cultural, social and political context. This cultural study acknowledges the inherent tendency of Christian rock “to cross over” as part of the Evangelical ideology in which it is rooted. It also views it as a symptom of the augmented power of conservative Evangelical groups in today’s American political and social climate and of the current, increased presence of discourses around religion and, specifically, Christianity in the public arena. Two potential developmental costs of high self-esteem were investigated. One was that high self-esteem leads children to act on antisocial cognitions (the disposition activating hypothesis). The other was that high self-esteem leads children to rationalize antisocial conduct (the disposition-rationalizing hypothesis). Both hypotheses were explored in two longitudinal studies with preadolescents. In Study 1 (N = 189) the antisocial behavior was aggression; in Study 2 (N = 407) the antisocial behavior under focus was avoidance of the mother. There was little evidence for the disposition-activating hypothesis in either study but considerable support for the disposition-rationalizing hypothesis in both studies. Over time, …

The purpose of this study was to determine elementary teachers' perceptions of gender bias and further, to determine if additional information on gender bias might have an effect on how elementary teachers interact with their students. The composition of marine bacterial communities from South Florida beaches were characterized using 16S rRNA sequence analysis. To compare cultivable and noncultured populations, community genomic DNA was extracted directly from sand and seawater samples and from two cultured equivalents. Only two ofthe 86 (2.3%) direct extracted sequences and 79 of 150 (52.6%) culture sequences belong to known isolates in Ribosomal Database (version 9.0) at 95% confidence level. At low stringency (p=0.70), the populations cluster into several unknown clads with early divergence, indicating the presence of novel well established bacterial groups. It is estimated that there will be a 20% shortage of full time equivalent registered nurses (RN) by 2015. Retention of nurses is a priority in health care, so a better understanding of factors that contribute to job satisfaction and intent to leave is needed. One possible factor is the quality of the interpersonal relationships that occur among managers, peers, and nurses. A negative quality would be acts of hostility or horizontal violence, which is nurse-to-nurse aggression. This is theorized to be a result of oppressed group behavior. This dissertation examines the processes of social, cultural, and political change that have taken place in Bolivia since the decade of the 1970s and how they have paved the way for the rise to power of indigenous people and the election of Evo Morales to the Presidency. "Head Lines of the Extra Ordinary: Collisions and Miracles" is a language-driven 15-story fiction collection that experiments with intertwining the traditions of oral and written storytelling. Within these stories, ordinary people step up to the extraordinary because of an unusual occurrence that requires a moment of change. Several of the stories within the collection take their premise from actual news headlines. To lend cohesion to the collection, multiple stories contain one or more reappearing characters.

Ocular neovascularization (NV), the development of new blood vessels in the eye, occurs when excessive vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is produced. Eventually NV may lead to photoreceptor loss and or blindness, as it does in age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), and diabetic retinopathy. We tested the hypothesis that the anti-inflammatory cytokine, interleukin-10 (IL-10); can reduce inflammation and block NV in the affected areas of the retina. The mouse ROP model was used for this study of NV. Seven day old neonates stayed in 75% oxygen for five days, then were given intraocular injection of IL-100 and …

This article begins with a critical account of what occurred in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. This critique serves as the backdrop for a discussion of whether there are international laws or norms that give poor, black Katrina victims the right to return to and resettle in New Orleans. In framing this discussion, this article first briefly explores some of the housing deprivations suffered by Katrina survivors that have led to widespread displacement and dispossession. A novel personnel authentication and verification system for devices communicating through Bluetooth protocol has been proposed in this thesis. Unlike existing verification systems which provide password or a PIN as a key, the system uses biometrics features as a key. In the implementation of the scheme, ridges and bifurcation based parameters are derived to generate a 128 bit Bluetooth pairing PIN. In this thesis a unique translational and rotational invariant feature set has been developed. These extracted feature data, unlike traditional systems which include the extracted data into payload, is used for device connection by generating the 128 bit PIN. …

Throughout the 1900s, the sense of a distinct sicilianita-or Sicilian-nessmanifested itself in writings by Italian authors such as Giovanni Verga, Luigi Pirandello, Leonardo Sciascia, Vincenzo Consolo, and Andrea Camilleri, among others. Interestingly, a parallel phenomenon has emerged in the United States in the broader field of Italian-American literature. While attempting to redefine the concept of Americanness and expand the canon of American literature so that it embraces articulations of ethnic identities, many Sicilian-American writers have turned their works into literary manifestations of their Sicilian Americanness, or, as I have called it, sicilianamericanita. Few phosphorus (P) depleted coastal marine ecosystems have been examined for their capacity to hydrolyze phosphomonoesters (PMEs). The purpose of this study was to examine seasonal APA partitioning between water column fractions (phytoplankton, bacteria and freely dissolved) and benthic autotrophs in Florida Bay, a P limited shallow estuary using low fluorescent substrate (MUF-P) concentrations (≤2.0 μm). APA was higher at the western and northcentral (751 and 695 nmol L^-1 h^-1) sites and driven by cyanobacterial blooms, compared to the P limited northeastern (359 nmol L^-1 h^-1) site The free dissolved fraction (<0.2 μm) accounted for the most APA (~50%), followed by the phytoplankton (>1 μm; 30%) and bacteria fraction (<0.2-> 1.2 …

A computer-efficient model of the underwater acoustic propagation m a shallow, three-dimensional duct closed at one end has been developed using the method of images. Presented in this research is the development of this three-dimensional method of images analysis for a rectangular duct. Using this analysis, a model of the impulse response of the acoustic channel is constructed. Also presented in this work is the actual impulse response collected during field experimentation in the south turning basin of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. When the Civil War began in 1861, the California Legislature pledged the state’s loyalty to the Union cause, and that allegiance never wavered. Location insulated the state from the major conflicts, and for most people, life remained relatively unchanged. The advent of the global knowledge economy and changing demographics have pressured the American postsecondary system to develop flexible alternative educational opportunities for adult learners. One of the most widespread institutional responses has been the development of accelerated courses and degree programs. Accelerated degree programs offer educational opportunities in time frames of less duration than the traditional semester or quarter formats. Concerns for maintaining educational quality make it imperative to develop best practices for the effective design of time-intensive curricula. Assessment Of A Nearshore And An Offshore Queen Conch (Strombus Gigas) Habitat In The Florida Keys Using Field And Laboratory Techniques, Gretchen A. Kowalik

Queen conch in the Florida Keys are slowly recovering from overfishing. This study assessed habitat characteristics, metamorphosis and postlarval growth of queen conch in a nearshore and an offshore habitat. The nearshore habitat was dominated by macroalgae while the offshore habitat was dominated by areas of open coarse sediment and seagrass. There was a significant difference among the top six diatom families at each habitat (p < 0.001). The diatom family Naviculaceae was dominant at both sites. No difference in microbial populations was observed (p>0.05). Larvae metamorphosed when exposed to sediment from nearshore and offshore locations (10-40%). Larvae exposed to offshore sediment at 27°C exhibited the highest metamorphic response (~40%). There was no significant difference in growth rate …
