Malaria And Pregnancy: The Perspective In Pakistan, Maqsood A. Bhatti, Muhammad Azharuddin, Samreen Bhatti, Muhammad Islam, Muhammad Aslam Khan
Section of Internal Medicine
Objective: To study the effects of malaria on pregnancy outcome. Methods: A case control study conducted on patients identified by ICD-9 coding system of the hospital medical records. Demographic and clinical data recorded on standardized data sheet and analyzed using SPSS 11.5 software. Results: Of the total patients, 67.4% were multigravid and 32.6% were primigravid with 78.6% of patients having platelets < 150,000. Mean haemoglobin was 9.4 gm/dl in patients and 12.2 gm/dl in controls. Plasmodium Vivax was accounted for 55.8%, P. Falciparum for 41.9%, and P. Ovale 2.3% of infections. In all, 48.8% of patients received oral Chloroquine, 16.3% oral Quinine, 30.3% intravenous Quinine, 20.9% of patients received combination treatment with IV Clindamycin, and one each patient received oral Artemether or oral halofantrine. Two patients had an abortion. One of the following complications including, threatened abortion, preterm labour, ARDS or Cerebral malaria, was observed in one patient each. Mean weight of babies born to cases was 2.8 kg (range 1.4-3.8) and of control babies was 3.2 kg (range 2.5-4.0 kg). No congenital malformations were reported.CONCLUSION: Plasmodium falciparum sp, moderate parasitic load, haemoglobin < 10 gm/dL, platelet count < 50,000/mm3 and IV quinine with loading dose of 20 mg/kg are identified as few of the potential risk factors for poor outcome in pregnancy.

Distributed denial-of-service attacks represent a growing problem for networked systems. To tackle this problem, this paper explores the addition of a public work function to the service advertisement mechanisms used by such systems. When under attack, services advertise this function along with their location information and clients must attach a solution to the function with subsequent requests. The function, which can be made specific to the source of traffic, is publicly verifiable, allowing arbitrary network devices at the edges of the network to quickly verify that subsequent communication from the source will be accepted by the destination. We describe a …

HIV and AIDS
This Horizons report presents findings from an evaluation of the Kenya Girl Guides Participatory Peer Education Program for HIV and AIDS Prevention. The objective of the program was to train Girl Guide patrol leaders as peer educators, who in turn would communicate key information and concepts about such topics as HIV prevention, relationships, and self-esteem to other Girl Guides, and ultimately to their school peers. The results demonstrate that peer education conducted by Girl Guides is a feasible strategy for imparting HIV and AIDS education to school-going youth; however, such a program would need to be branded, strengthened, and appropriately …

HIV and AIDS
A case study conducted in Tororo, Uganda found that a partnership between TASO, an AIDS service NGO and agricultural extension, was successful in helping HIV-affected communities improve food security. This Horizons study reports that four participatory training workshops developed through the alliance resulted in improved management capacity and more collaborative organizational structures among the district partners. This in turn created the conditions for the AIDS community workers and other field partners to work more effectively together with farmers’ groups at the local level to identify and address constraints to food security.

HIV and AIDS
Research with mobile populations has demonstrated that men in the mobile workforce tend to be exposed to greater HIV risk, and have higher sexually transmitted infection (STI) and HIV prevalence, than those in less mobile or non-mobile professions. At the request of the Brazilian Ministry of Health and with support from USAID/Brazil, the Population Council conducted an assessment in Brazilian border areas to determine which populations were most in need of HIV prevention activities. The research revealed the presence of an extremely mobile, international truck driver community with little to no access to HIV prevention, testing, and treatment services. The …

We met at Duke University - mid-summer, in the mid Atlantic, at mid-campus - to talk about teaching courses that focused on the post-soul aesthetic. We met outside the John Hope Franklin Center, and soon enough we five youngish black professors were walking a hallway towards a conference room near the African and African American Studies program. Not at all surprisingly, the walls of the hallway were lined with framed photographs of the esteemed John Hope Franklin at various stages throughout his long and storied career. For me, given the topic I was about to raise among these professional colleagues, …

Preserving The Seeds Of Gender Fluidity: Tribal Courts And The Berdache Tradition, Andrew Gilden
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
This Article outlines the particular cultural characteristics giving rise to traditional berdachism, the means by which American policies fostered their decline, and the Navajo tribal courts' re-infusion of these characteristics into contemporary jurisprudence. By tracking the interplay between the traditional values of child autonomy, gender equality, and tribal collectivism, the rise, fall and potential reemergence of the berdache tradition can be analyzed as resulting from shifts in its determinative cultural elements.
Refusal To Dispense Emergency Contraception In Washington State: An Act Of Conscience Or Unlawful Sex Discrimination?, Dana E. Blackman
Refusal To Dispense Emergency Contraception In Washington State: An Act Of Conscience Or Unlawful Sex Discrimination?, Dana E. Blackman
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
This Article will demonstrate that a pharmacist's refusal to fill a valid prescription for emergency contraception constitutes sex discrimination and violates the WLAD. Part I explains the nature and function of emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) as well as their role in basic health care for women and the importance of their accessibility. Part II addresses federal civil rights protections and the failure of these protections to provide relief for women facing refusals. Focusing on the WLAD, Part II also explains how state public accommodation statutes protect women from discrimination in places of public accommodation. It further sets forth the prima …

The interactions of aerosols consisting of humic acids with gaseous nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were investigated under different light conditions in aerosol flow tube experiments at ambient pressure and temperature. The results show that NO2 is converted on the humic acid aerosol into nitrous acid (HONO), which is released from the aerosol and can be detected in the gas phase at the reactor exit. The formation of HONO on the humic acid aerosol is strongly activated by light: In the dark, the HONO-formation was below the detection limit, but it was increasing with the intensity of the irradiation with visible light. …

Synthesis Of Nitrogen-Containing Heterocycles From The Reaction Of Amidrazones With \Alpha-Haloesters, Hany M. Dalloul, Peter H. Boyle
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The reaction of amidrazones 1 with \alpha-haloesters 2 formed 1,3,5-substituted 4,5-dihydro-1,2,4-triazin-6-ones (4a-z) rather than 1,2,4-triazin-5-one derivatives (5a-z). The microanalysis and spectral data of the synthesized compounds are in full agreement with their molecular structure.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Four platinum(II) and 4 platinum(IV) complexes with the structures [PtL_2Cl_2], [PtL_2I_2], [PtL_2Cl_4], and [PtL_2Cl_2(OH)_2] (L = 5(6)-non/orchloro-substituted-2-hydroxymethylbenzimidazole ligands as ``non-leaving groups''), respectively, were synthesized and characterized by their elemental analyses, and IR and ^1H-NMR spectra. In vitro cytotoxic activities of the platinum(II) and platinum(IV) complexes were tested against the human MCF-7 (breast cancer) and HeLa (cervix cancer) cell lines using the cell culture method. In general, the platinum(II) complexes were more active than the corresponding platinum(IV) complexes. The complexes, which were found to be less active than cisplatin, exhibited cyctotoxicity comparable to carboplatin on the human MCF-7 and HeLa cell …
