The Identity, Distribution, And Impacts Of Non-Native Apple Snails In The Continental United States, Timothy Rawlings, Kenneth Hayes, Robert Cowie, Timothy Collins

Department of Biology Faculty Publications

Since the mid 1990s populations of non-native apple snails (Ampullariidae) have been discovered with increasing frequency in the continental United States. Given the dramatic effects that introduced apple snails have had on both natural habitats and agricultural areas in Southeast Asia, their introduction to the mainland U.S. is cause for concern. We combine phylogenetic analyses of mtDNA sequences with examination of introduced populations and museum collections to clarify the identities, introduced distributions, geographical origins, and introduction histories of apple snails.Based on sampling to date, we conclude there are five species of non-native apple snails in the continental U.S. Most significantly, …

Solar Forcing Of Gulf Of California Climate During The Past 2000 Yr Suggested By Diatoms And Silicoflagellates, John A. Barron, David Bukry Jan 2007

Solar Forcing Of Gulf Of California Climate During The Past 2000 Yr Suggested By Diatoms And Silicoflagellates, John A. Barron, David Bukry

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

High-resolution records of the past 2000 yr are compared in a north–south transect (28° N to 24° N) of three cores from the eastern slopes of the Guaymas, Carmen, and Pescadero Basins of the Gulf of California (hereafter referred to as the “Gulf”). Evenly-spaced samples from the varved sediments in each core allow sample resolution ranging from ∼ 16 to ∼ 37 yr.

Diatoms and silicoflagellates capture the seasonal variation between a late fall to early spring period of high biosiliceous productivity, that is driven by northwest winds, and a summer period of warmer, more stratified waters during which these …

Army Research Needs For Automated Neuropsychological Tests: Monitoring Soldier Health And Performance Status, Karl E. Friedl, Stephen J. Grate, Susan P. Proctor, James W. Ness, Brian J. Lukey, Robert L. Kane

United States Army: Publications

Information on the mental status of soldiers operating at the limits of human tolerance will be vital to their management in future deployments; it may also allow earlier intervention for conditions such as undiagnosed Gulf War illnesses and Parkinson’s Disease. The Army needs a parsimonious set of neuropsychological tests that reliably identify subtle changes for: (1) early detection of individual health and military performance impairments and (2) management of occupational and deployment health risks. Testing must characterize cognitive lapses in healthy individuals faced with relevant operational stressors (i.e., anxiety, information overload, thermal strain, hypoxia, fatigue, head impact, chemical or radiation …

Improved Formulation Of A Recombinant Ricin A-Chain Vaccine Iincreases Its Stability And Effective Antigenicity, John H. Carra, Robert W. Wannemacher, Ralph F. Tammariello, Changhong Y. Lindsey, Richard E. Dinterman, Rowena D. Schokman, Leonard A. Smith

United States Army: Publications

Ricin is a potent toxin associated with bioterrorism for which no vaccine or specific countermeasures are currently available. A stable, non-toxic and immunogenic recombinant ricin A-chain vaccine (RTA 1-33/44-198) has been developed by protein engineering. We identified optimal formulation conditions for this vaccine under which it remained stable and potent in storage for up to 18 months, and resisted multiple rounds of freeze–thawing without stabilizing co-solvents. Reformulation from phosphate buffer to succinate buffer increased adherence of the protein to aluminum hydroxide adjuvant from 15 to 91%, with a concomitant increase of nearly threefold in effective antigenicity in a mouse model. …

United States Army: Publications

We previously identified structurally diverse small molecule (non-peptidic) inhibitors (SMNPIs) of the botulinum neurotoxin serotype A (BoNT/A) light chain (LC). Of these, several (including antimalarial drugs) contained a 4-amino-7-chloroquinoline (ACQ) substructure and a separate positive ionizable amine component. The same antimalarials have also been found to interfere with BoNT/A translocation into neurons, via pH elevation of the toxin-mediated endosome. Thus, this structural class of small molecules may serve as dual-function BoNT/A inhibitors. In this study, we used a refined pharmacophore for BoNT/A LC inhibition to identify four new, potent inhibitors of this structural class (IC50’s ranged from 3.2 to 17 …

We conducted an open-label, staggered-start, dose-escalating Phase I trial in 23 malaria-naıve volunteers who received 8, 20 or 40 _g of FMP2.1 in a fixed volume of 0.5mL of AS02A on a 0, 1, and 2 month schedule. Nineteen of 23 volunteers received all three scheduled immunizations. The most frequent solicited local and systemic adverse events associated with immunization were injection site pain (68%) …

An In Vitro Comparative Study On The Reactivation Of Nerve Agent-Inhibited Guinea Pig And Human Acetylcholinesterases By Oximes, Chunyuan Luo, Min Tong, Nageswararao Chilukuri, Karen Brecht, Donald M. Maxwell, Ashima Saxena Jan 2007

Maxwell, Ashima Saxena

United States Army: Publications

The reactivation of nerve agent-inhibited acetylcholinesterase (AChE) by oxime is the most important step in the treatment of nerve agent poisoning. Since the evaluation of nerve agent antidotes cannot be conducted in humans, results from animal experiments are extrapolated to humans. Guinea pig is one of the animal models that is frequently used for conducting nerve agent antidote evaluations. Several investigations have demonstrated that the efficacy of an oxime primarily depends on its ability to reactivate nerve agent-inhibited AChE. If the in Vitro oxime reactivation of nerve agent-inhibited animal AChE is similar to that of human AChE, it is likely …

Loathsome Beasts: Images Of Reptiles And Amphibians In Art And Science, Kay Etheridge Jan 2007

Loathsome Beasts: Images Of Reptiles And Amphibians In Art And Science, Kay Etheridge

Biology Faculty Publications

The mythology and symbolism historically associated with reptiles and amphibians is unequaled by that of any other taxonomic group of animals. Even today, these creatures serve as icons - often indicating magic or evil - in a variety of media. Reptiles and amphibians also differ from other vertebrates (i.e. fish, mammals and birds) in that most have never been valued in Europe as food or for sport. Aside from some limited medicinal uses and the medical concerns related to venomous species, there was little utilitarian value in studying the natural history of reptiles and amphibians. Because of this history and …

Protein Free Energy Landscapes Remodeled By Ligand Binding, Troy C. Messina, David Talaga Jan 2007

Protein Free Energy Landscapes Remodeled By Ligand Binding, Troy C. Messina, David Talaga

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Glucose/galactose binding protein (GGBP) functions in two different larger systems of proteins used by enteric bacteria for molecular recognition and signaling. Here we report on the thermodynamics of conformational equilibrium distributions of GGBP. Three fluorescence components appear at zero glucose concentration and systematically transition to three components at high glucose concentration. Fluorescence anisotropy correlations, fluorescent lifetimes, thermodynamics, computational structure minimization, and literature work were used to assign the three components as open, closed, and twisted conformations of the protein. The existence of three states at all glucose concentrations indicates that the protein continuously fluctuates about its conformational state space via …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Conversational Sensitivity And Listening Styles, Jennifer R. Salisbury, Guo-Ming Chen Jan 2007

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Conversational Sensitivity And Listening Styles, Jennifer R. Salisbury, Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Previous research on conversational sensitivity and listening styles has shown inconsistent results on the relationship between the two concepts. This study is designed to continue the line of research by further examining the relationship of the two concepts and between the dimensions. Two hundred and seventy students in the basic courses of Communication and Psychology participate in this study. The results indicate that significantly positive and negative relationships exist among the dimensions of the two concepts. Gender differences on the two concepts are also tested. Limitations and directions for future research are as well discussed.

In a previous study, we showed that the inositol pyrophosphate diphosphoinositol pentakisphosphate (IP7) physiologically phosphorylates mammalian and yeast proteins. We now report that this phosphate transfer reflects pyrophosphorylation. Thus, proteins must be prephosphorylated by ATP to prime them for IP7 phosphorylation. IP7 phosphorylates synthetic phosphopeptides but not if their phosphates have been masked by methylation or pyrophosphorylation. Moreover, IP7 phosphorylated peptides are more acid-labile and more resistant to phosphatases than ATP phosphorylated peptides, indicating a different type of phosphate bond. Pyrophosphorylation may represent a novel mode of signaling to proteins.

Cancer Prevention Research Center Faculty Publications

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlates of vaginal intercourse without barrier contraception (unprotected intercourse).

Study Design: Baseline data from a randomized trial were analyzed to evaluate factors that are associated with intercourse without barrier method use among women <35 years old. Logistic regression models provided estimates of the association of demographic, reproductive, and sexual history variables with unprotected intercourse.

Results: Intercourse without barrier contraception was common; 65% of participants had ≥2 episodes of intercourse without barrier contraception use in the past month. Factors that were associated with increased odds of unprotected intercourse included the number of coital episodes, a male partner’s unwillingness to use condoms (adjusted odds ratio, 4.1; 95% CI, 2.3-6.9), and, among women <20 years old, low condom use self-efficacy score (adjusted odds ratio, 1.6; 95% CI, 1.0-2.9).

Conclusion: …

On The Divergent American Reactions To Terrorism And Climate Change, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2007

On The Divergent American Reactions To Terrorism And Climate Change, Cass R. Sunstein

Articles

Two of the most important sources of catastrophic risk are terrorism and climate change. The United States has responded aggressively to the risk of terrorism while doing very little about the risk of climate change. For the United States alone, the cost of the Iraq War is in excess of the anticipated cost of the Kyoto Protocol. The divergence presents a puzzle; it also raises more general questions about both risk perception and the public demand for legislation. The best explanation for the divergence emphasizes bounded rationality. Americans believe that aggressive steps to reduce the risk of terrorism promise to …
