Applying The Levels Of Conceptual Interoperability Model In Support Of Integratability, Interoperability, And Composability For System-Of-Systems Engineering, Andreas Tolk, Saikou Y. Diallo, Charles D. Turnitsa

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

The Levels of Conceptual Interoperability Model (LCIM) was developed to cope with the different layers of interoperation of modeling & simulation applications. It introduced technical, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, dynamic, and conceptual layers of interoperation and showed how they are related to the ideas of integratability, interoperability, and composability. The model was successfully applied in various domains of systems, cybernetics, and informatics.

Modeling Natural Environmental Gradients Improves The Accuracy And Precision Of Diatom-Based Indicators, Yong Cao, Charles P. Hawkins, John Olson Jan 2007

Modeling Natural Environmental Gradients Improves The Accuracy And Precision Of Diatom-Based Indicators, Yong Cao, Charles P. Hawkins, John Olson

School of Natural Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Diatom-based indicators can contribute significantly to comprehensive assessments of stream biological conditions. We used modeling to develop, evaluate, and compare 2 types of diatom-based indicators for Idaho streams: an observed/expected (O/E) ratio of taxon loss derived from a model similar to the River InVertebrate Prediction And Classification System (RIVPACS) and a multimetric index (MMI). Modeling the effects of natural environmental gradients on assemblage composition is a key component of RIVPACS, but modeling has seldom been used for MMI development. Diatom assemblage structure varied substantially among reference-site samples, but neither ecoregion nor bioregion accounted for a significant portion of that variation. …

Net Primary Productivity Of Forest Stands In New Hampshire Estimated From Landsat And Modis Satellite Data, Christopher Potter, Peggy Gross, Vanessa Genovese, Marie-Louise Smith

School of Natural Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: A simulation model that relies on satellite observations of vegetation cover from the Landsat 7 sensor and from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) was used to estimate net primary productivity (NPP) of forest stands at the Bartlett Experiment Forest (BEF) in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Results: Net primary production (NPP) predicted from the NASA-CASA model using 30-meter resolution Landsat inputs showed variations related to both vegetation cover type and elevational effects on mean air temperatures. Overall, the highest predicted NPP from the NASA-CASA model was for deciduous forest cover at low to mid-elevation locations over the …

Locus-Specific Ribosomal Rna Gene Silencing In Nucleolar Dominance, Michelle S. Lewis, Diane J. Pikaard, Mikhail Nasrallah, Jed H. Doelling, Craig S. Pikaard

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The silencing of one parental set of rRNA genes in a genetic hybrid is an epigenetic phenomenon known as nucleolar dominance. We showed previously that silencing is restricted to the nucleolus organizer regions (NORs), the loci where rRNA genes are tandemly arrayed, and does not spread to or from neighboring protein-coding genes. One hypothesis is that nucleolar dominance is the net result of hundreds of silencing events acting one rRNA gene at a time. A prediction of this hypothesis is that rRNA gene silencing should occur independent of chromosomal location. An alternative hypothesis is that the regulatory unit in nucleolar …

Effect Of Starvation On Global Gene Expression And Proteolysis In Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Mohamed Salem, Jeff Silverstein, Caird E. Rexroad Iii, Jianbo Yao

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background

Fast, efficiently growing animals have increased protein synthesis and/or reduced protein degradation relative to slow, inefficiently growing animals. Consequently, minimizing the energetic cost of protein turnover is a strategic goal for enhancing animal growth. Characterization of gene expression profiles associated with protein turnover would allow us to identify genes that could potentially be used as molecular biomarkers to select for germplasm with improved protein accretion.

Results

We evaluated changes in hepatic global gene expression in response to 3-week starvation in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Microarray analysis revealed a coordinated, down-regulated expression of protein biosynthesis genes in starved …

Apoptosis And Bax Expression Are Increased By Coal Dust In The Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon-Exposed Lung, Mohamed M. Ghanem, Lori A. Battelli, Robert R. Mercer, James F. Scabilloni, Michael L. Kashon, Jane Y C Ma, Joginder Nath, Ann F. Hubbs

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background

Miners inhaling respirable coal dust (CD) frequently develop coal workers’ pneumoconiosis, a dust-associated pneumoconiosis characterized by lung inflammation and variable fibrosis. Many coal miners are also exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) components of diesel engine exhaust and cigarette smoke, which may contribute to lung disease in these workers. Recently, apoptosis was reported to play a critical role in the development of another pneumoconiosis of miners, silicosis. In addition, CD was reported to suppress cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) induction by PAHs.

Methods

We investigated the hypothesis that apoptosis plays a critical role in lung injury and down-regulation of CYP1A1 …

Examining Smoking And Cessation During Pregnancy Among An Appalachian Sample: A Preliminary View, Lesley Cottrell, Mark Gibson, Carole Harris, Alia Rai, Sabera Sobhan, Traci Berry, Bonita Stanton

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background

Several transitions that a woman experiences prenatally may influence her desire or ability to discontinue smoking. This study explores the role of smoking for young, Appalachian, nulliparous pregnant women and their plans for smoking during their pregnancies.

Results

The reports of women and their male partners were taken from baseline interviews conducted during the first trimester of pregnancy. Cigarette smoking appeared to be more than an isolated addictive activity; rather, smoking was interwoven in women's social and personal realms, often changing as their perceptions of self changed. Women and their partners who continued to smoke appeared to be depressed, …

Pkcepsilon And An Increase In Intracellular Calcium Concentration Are Necessary For Pgf2alpha To Inhibit Lh-Stimulated Progesterone Secretion In Cultured Bovine Steroidogenic Luteal Cells, Madhusudan P. Goravanahally, Aritro Sen, Emmet K. Inskeep, Jorge A. Flores Jan 2007

Flores

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The hypotheses that PKCepsilon is necessary for: 1) PGF2alpha to inhibit LH-stimulated progesterone (P4) secretion, and 2) for the expression of key prostaglandin synthesizing/metabolizing enzymes were tested in bovine luteal cells in which PKCepsilon expression had been ablated using a validated siRNA protocol. Steroidogenic cells from Day -6 bovine corpus luteum (CL) were isolated and transfected to reduce PKCepsilon expression after 48, 72 and 96 h. A third tested hypothesis was that an increase in intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca(2+)]i) is the cellular mechanism through which PGF2alpha inhibits luteal progesterone. The hypothesis was tested with two pharmacological agents. In the first …

A Mobile Element-Based Evolutionary History Of Guenons (Tribe Cercopithecini), Jinchuan Xing, Hui Wang, Yuhua Zhang, David A. Ray, Anthony J. Tosi, Todd R. Disotell, Mark A. Batzer

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background

Guenons (tribe Cercopithecini) are a species-rich group of primates that have attracted considerable attention from both primatologists and evolutionary biologists. The complex speciation pattern has made the elucidation of their relationships a challenging task, and many questions remain unanswered. SINEs are a class of non-autonomous mobile elements and are essentially homoplasy-free characters with known ancestral states, making them useful genetic markers for phylogenetic studies.

Results

We identified 151 novel Alu insertion loci from 11 species of tribe Cercopithecini, and used these insertions and 17 previously reported loci to infer a phylogenetic tree of the tribe Cercopithecini. Our results robustly …

Effect Of Temperature On Gamete Production And Biochemical Composition Of Gonads In The Sea Urchin Lytechinus Variegatus, Victoria K. Gibbs, Stephen A. Watts, Addison L. Lawrence Jan 2007

Effect Of Temperature On Gamete Production And Biochemical Composition Of Gonads In The Sea Urchin Lytechinus Variegatus, Victoria K. Gibbs, Stephen A. Watts, Addison L. Lawrence

Gulf of Mexico Science

Temperature is one of the most important proximate factors affecting the biology of ectothermal organisms. In the sea urchin, Lytechimus variegatus, the reproductive cycle in wild populations is correlated with changing water temperature, suggesting that reproduction may be dependent, in part, on temperature. Adult L. variegatus (ca. 35.63 ± 1.24 g wet weight, 40-mm diameter) were collected in October 2001 from St. Joseph Bay, FL (30°N, 85.5°W) and transported to the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Sea urchins were placed into nine 80-liter aquaria (n = eight sea urchins per aquarium) maintained in enclosed incubators (n = three aquaria …

Behavior Patterns Of Bottlenose Dolphins In San Luis Pass, Texas, E. Elizabeth Henderson, Bernd Würsig Jan 2007

Behavior Patterns Of Bottlenose Dolphins In San Luis Pass, Texas, E. Elizabeth Henderson, Bernd Würsig

Gulf of Mexico Science

Common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are behaviorally flexible cetaceans that have adapted to a wide variety of habitats. In the San Luis Pass area near Galveston, Texas, there are two populations of bottlenose dolphins, distinguished through long-term photo-identification studies, which use adjacent habitat in different ways. A small resident population makes use of the shallow bay system, while the larger, more transient population remains outside the bay along the Gulf of Mexico coastline. A 13-mo study was conducted to examine the behavior of these populations and to explore the hypothesis that although they overlap geographically, each population utilizes …

Mammals are aerobes that harbor an intestinal ecosystem dominated by large numbers of anaerobic microorganisms. However, the role of oxygen in the intestinal ecosystem is largely unexplored. We used systematic mutational analysis to determine the role of respiratory metabolism in the streptomycin-treated mouse model of intestinal colonization. Here we provide evidence that aerobic respiration is required for commensal and pathogenic Escherichia coli to colonize mice. Our results showed that mutants lacking ATP synthase, which is required for all respiratory energy-conserving metabolism, were eliminated by competition with respiratory-competent wild-type strains. Mutants lacking the high-affinity cytochrome bd oxidase, which is used when …

L-Fucose Stimulates Utilization Of D-Ribose By Escherichia Coli Mg1655 Δfucao And E. Coli Nissle 1917 Δfucao Mutants In The Mouse Intestine And In M9 Minimal Medium, Steven M. Autieri, Jeremy J. Lins, Mary P. Leatham, David C. Laux, Tyrrell Conway, Paul S. Cohen

Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

Escherichia coli MG1655 uses several sugars for growth in the mouse intestine. To determine the roles of l-fucose and d-ribose, an E. coli MG1655 ΔfucAO mutant and an E. coli MG1655 ΔrbsK mutant were fed separately to mice along with wild-type E. coli MG1655. The E. coli MG1655 ΔfucAO mutant colonized the intestine at a level 2 orders of magnitude lower than that of the wild type, but the E. coli MG1655 ΔrbsK mutant and the wild type colonized at nearly identical levels. Surprisingly, an E. coli MG1655 ΔfucAO ΔrbsK mutant was eliminated from …

Role Of Motility And The Flhdc Operon In Escherichia Coli Mg1655 Colonization Of The Mouse Intestine, Eric J. Gauger, Mary P. Leatham, Regino Mercado-Lubo, David C. Laux, Tyrrell Conway, Paul S. Cohen

Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

Previously, we reported that the mouse intestine selected mutants of Escherichia coli MG1655 that have improved colonizing ability (M. P. Leatham et al., Infect. Immun. 73:8039-8049, 2005). These mutants grew 10 to 20% faster than their parent in mouse cecal mucus in vitro and 15 to 30% faster on several sugars found in the mouse intestine. The mutants were nonmotile and had deletions of various lengths beginning immediately downstream of an IS1 element located within the regulatory region of the flhDC operon, which encodes the master regulator of flagellum biosynthesis, FlhD4C2. Here we show …

Rational Risk/Benefit Analysis Of Genetically Modified Crops, Stanley P. Kowalski Jan 2007

Rational Risk/Benefit Analysis Of Genetically Modified Crops, Stanley P. Kowalski

Law Faculty Scholarship

Safety concerns over the use of molecular biotechnology in the improvement of crops has generated substantial, heated and confusing debates, often driven by ideology and hysterics. Modification of crops is not new, and biotechnology (in its broadest sense) has been used for over a century to accelerate the development of new crops for food, feed and fibre, so as to meet the demands of a growing global community. The introduction of crops developed via molecular biotechnology [Genetically Modified Crops (GMCs)] represents the latest step in this inexorable innovative progression of technology. However, misinformed concern has led to a broad embrace …

Ip And The Global Public Interest: Challenges And Opportunities, Jon R. Cavicchi, Stanley P. Kowalski

Law Faculty Scholarship

[Excerpt from article] Intellectual property (IP) capacity is essential for economic development, particularly as countries transition into the higher technology sectors, for example biotechnology. For developing countries, a commitment to minimal IP rights protection will determine inclusion in the World Trade Organization (WTO), facilitate access to foreign-direct investment, and accelerate economic development. However, on a more fundamental level, capacity in IP management will affect whether a country can provide basic health and nutritional needs for its citizens. For example, sustainable food security presents a serious challenge in many developing countries; as their economies rapidly emerge, urban centers expand, arable land …

Detecting Denial Of Severe Psychiatric Disorder: An Mmpi-2 Investigation Of Criminal Defendants, L. Thomas Kucharski, Paul Tang, Barry Rosenfeld

Psychology Faculty Publications

The ability of the MMPI-2 validity scales to differentiate mentally ill defendants who denied being mentally ill from mentally ill defendants who acknowledged their illness and those without mental illness was investigated. A stepwise logistic regression analysis (LGA) was utilized to identify the most parsimonious set of predictors among the MMPI-2 validity measures. The F and K scales and the Es-K index significantly differentiated the denying mental illness group from those acknowledging their psychiatric difficulties with a high degree of accuracy. An ROC curve utilizing the prediction scores from the LGA yielded an area under the curve of .89. An …

Dialectical Behavior Therapy For The Treatment Of Stalking Offenders, Barry Rosenfeld, Michele Galietta, Andre Ivanoff, Alexandra Garcia-Mansilla, Ricardo Martinez, Joanna Fava, Virginia Fineran, Debbie Green

Psychology Faculty Publications

The need for effective mental health interventions for specific offender populations has become clear in recent decades. In particular, individuals who engage in stalking and harassment have increasingly attracted the attention of the public and mental health and criminal justice professionals, however no evidence-based treatment currently exists for this population. We adapted Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for the treatment of this offender group, in part because of the high prevalence of personality disorders. This study describes the application of a 6-month treatment program to a sample of 29 individuals, 14 of whom completed treatment. Treated offenders were significantly less likely …
