A Comprehensive Guide To Fuels Treatment Practices For Ponderosa Pine In The Black Hills, Colorado Front Range, And Southwest, Molly E. Hunter, Wayne D. Shepperd, Leigh B. Lentile, John D. Lundquist, Michael G. Andreu, Jack L. Butler, Frederick W. Smith

Joint Fire Science Program Synthesis Reports

The objective of this paper is to present recommendations for fuels treatments in ponderosa pine forests in the Southwest, Colorado Front Range, and Black Hills of South Dakota. We have synthesized existing knowledge from the peer-reviewed literature and administrative studies and acquired local knowledge through a series of discussions with fuels treatment practitioners. We describe specific treatments, the circumstances under which they can be applied, and treatment effects. We provide recommendations related to where, how, and how often fuels treatments may be prescribed to achieve desired outcomes. Desired outcomes address social, political, economic, and ecological factors.

Short-Term Disruption Of A Leafy Spurge (Euphorbia Esula) Biocontrol Program Following Herbicide Application, Diane L. Larson, James B. Grace, Paul A. Rabie, Paula Andersen Jan 2007

Short-Term Disruption Of A Leafy Spurge (Euphorbia Esula) Biocontrol Program Following Herbicide Application, Diane L. Larson, James B. Grace, Paul A. Rabie, Paula Andersen

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Integrated pest management (IPM) for invasive plant species is being advocated by researchers and implemented by land managers, but few studies have evaluated the success of IPM programs in natural areas. We assessed the relative effects of components of an IPM program for leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula), an invasive plant, at Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota. Effects of herbicides on leafy spurge abundance and on dynamics of flea beetles (Aphthona spp.) used to control leafy spurge were evaluated over three field seasons following herbicide application. We monitored leafy spurge-infested plots with established flea beetle populations that …

Seedling Establishment And Survival On Restored Campsites In Subalpine Forest, David N. Cole Jan 2007

Seedling Establishment And Survival On Restored Campsites In Subalpine Forest, David N. Cole

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

This study experimented with common restoration techniques (scarification, soil amendments, mulch, and seeding) on six closed wilderness campsites in subalpine forests in Oregon. Effectiveness in encouraging seedling establishment, growth, and survival was assessed every year for the first 7 years following treatment. Closure and restoration of the campsites increased the density of plants established from seed. Despite an original density of virtually zero, mean density of perennial plants was 55 plants/m2 7 years after closure. All the treatments, with the exception of the biodegradable mulch mat, increased plant density. Seven years after treatment, seeding had increased plant density 5-fold, …

A Biofilm Enhanced Miniature Microbial Fuel Cell Using Shewanella Oneidensis Dsp10 And Oxygen Reduction Cathodes, Justin C. Biffinger, Jeremy Pietron, Ricky Ray, Brenda J. Little, Bradley R. Ringeisen Jan 2007

A Biofilm Enhanced Miniature Microbial Fuel Cell Using Shewanella Oneidensis Dsp10 And Oxygen Reduction Cathodes, Justin C. Biffinger, Jeremy Pietron, Ricky Ray, Brenda J. Little, Bradley R. Ringeisen

United States Navy: Publications

Aminiature-microbial fuel cell (mini-MFC, chamber volume: 1.2 mL)was used to monitor biofilm development from a pure culture of Shewanella oneidensis DSP10 on graphite felt (GF) under minimal nutrient conditions. ESEM evidence of biofilm formation on GF is supported by substantial power density (per device cross-section) from the mini-MFC when using an acellular minimal media anolyte (1500mW/m2). These experiments demonstrate that power density per volume for a biofilm flow reactor MFC should be calculated using the anode chamber volume alone (250 W/m3), rather than with the full anolyte volume. Two oxygen reduction cathodes (uncoated GF or a …

A Scale-Free Systems Theory Of Motivation And Addiction, R. Andrew Chambers, Warren K. Bickel, Marc N. Potenza Jan 2007

A Scale-Free Systems Theory Of Motivation And Addiction, R. Andrew Chambers, Warren K. Bickel, Marc N. Potenza

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Scale-free organizations, characterized by uneven distributions of linkages between nodal elements, describe the structure and function of many life-based complex systems developing under evolutionary pressures. We explore motivated behavior as a scale-free map toward a comprehensive translational theory of addiction. Motivational and behavioral repertoires are reframed as link and nodal element sets, respectively, comprising a scale-free structure. These sets are generated by semi-independent information-processing streams within cortical–striatal circuits that cooperatively provide decision-making and sequential processing functions necessary for traversing maps of motivational links connecting behavioral nodes. Dopamine modulation of cortical–striatal plasticity serves a central-hierarchical mechanism for survival-adaptive sculpting and development …

Screening, Early Detection, And Trends For Melanoma: Current Status (2000-2006) And Future Directions, Alan C. Geller, Susan M. Swetter, Katie Brooks, Marie-France Demierre, Amy L. Yaroch Jan 2007

Screening, Early Detection, And Trends For Melanoma: Current Status (2000-2006) And Future Directions, Alan C. Geller, Susan M. Swetter, Katie Brooks, Marie-France Demierre, Amy L. Yaroch

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

In the past 5 years, there have been notable strides toward the earlier recognition and discovery of melanoma, including new technologies to complement and augment the clinical examination and new insights to help clinicians recognize early melanoma. However, incidence and mortality rates throughout most of the developed world have risen over the past 25 years, while education and screening, potentially the best means for reducing the disease, continue to be severely underutilized. Much progress needs to be made to reach middle-aged and older men and persons of lower socioeconomic status who suffer a disproportionate burden of death from melanoma. Worldwide …

Targeted Disruption Of The Glutaredoxin 1 Gene Does Not Sensitize Adult Mice To Tissue Injury Induced By Ischemia/Reperfusion And Hyperoxia, Ye-Shih Ho, Ye Xiong, Dorothy S. Ho, Jinping Gao, Balvin H.L. Chua, Harish Pai, John J. Mieyal Jan 2007

Targeted Disruption Of The Glutaredoxin 1 Gene Does Not Sensitize Adult Mice To Tissue Injury Induced By Ischemia/Reperfusion And Hyperoxia, Ye-Shih Ho, Ye Xiong, Dorothy S. Ho, Jinping Gao, Balvin H.L. Chua, Harish Pai, John J. Mieyal

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

To understand the physiological function of glutaredoxin, a thiotransferase catalyzing the reduction of mixed disulfides of protein and glutathione, we generated a line of knockout mice deficient in the cytosolic glutaredoxin 1 (Grx1). To our surprise, mice deficient in Grx1 were not more susceptible to acute oxidative insults in models of heart and lung injury induced by ischemia/reperfusion and hyperoxia, respectively, suggesting that either changes in S-glutathionylation status of cytosolic proteins are not the major cause of such tissue injury or developmental adaptation in the Glrx1-knockout animals alters the response to oxidative insult. In contrast, mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) …

Danger: Our Quest For Excitement, Michael J. Apter Jan 2007

Danger: Our Quest For Excitement, Michael J. Apter

Books

Why do we slow down to look at car accidents? Why would rich people shoplift? What draws people to parachuting, hooliganism or sadistic sex? These are just some of the questions and conundrums Michael J. Apter investigates in a fascinating study of our paradoxical appetite for danger and risk-taking. Danger: Our Quest for Excitement explains how even in dangerous situations (often because of them) anxiety can become excitement and fear can become exhilaration - transforming the horrifying into the heavenly.

An Inventory Of The Vascular Flora Of Hamilton County, Iowa (2001-2004), Jimmie D. Thompson Jan 2007

An Inventory Of The Vascular Flora Of Hamilton County, Iowa (2001-2004), Jimmie D. Thompson

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A botanical survey of the vascular flora of Hamilton County, Iowa was conducted from 2001 to 2004. During this survey 973 taxa (761 native) were encountered. A search of the literature and a survey of Iowa State University's Ada Hayden Herbarium for additional documented specimens added 28 taxa to the flora. This total of 1001 taxa places Hamilton County fourth in vascular plant richness among inventories conducted in Iowa since 1950. A checklist including common names of most taxa, habitat and abundance data for all taxa encountered during the current survey is presented. Information on earlier collections includes source and …

Fall And Winter Food Habits Of Bobcats (Lynx Rufus) In Iowa, Kelcey J. Brockmeyer, William R. Clark Jan 2007

Fall And Winter Food Habits Of Bobcats (Lynx Rufus) In Iowa, Kelcey J. Brockmeyer, William R. Clark

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The bobcat (Lynx rufus) is a widely distributed native felid of North America but nearly disappeared from Iowa due to habitat loss and unregulated harvest that occurred during the century after European settlement. Bobcats are repopulating the state and are now relatively common in southern Iowa. This study was part of a research project to understand the ecology of the species in Iowa's landscape so that conservation plans could be established. We determined food habits by the examination of stomach contents from 100 bobcat carcasses that were accidentally killed in traps, killed by automobiles, or radio-marked individuals found dead during …

Nitric Oxide And Cgmp Signaling In Calcium-Dependent Development Of Cell Polarity In Ceratopteris Richardii, Mari L. Salmi, Kacey E. Morris, Stanley J. Roux, D. Marshall Porterfield Jan 2007

Nitric Oxide And Cgmp Signaling In Calcium-Dependent Development Of Cell Polarity In Ceratopteris Richardii, Mari L. Salmi, Kacey E. Morris, Stanley J. Roux, D. Marshall Porterfield

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Single-celled spores of the fern Ceratopteris richardii undergo gravity-directed cell polarity development that is driven by polar calcium currents. Here we present results that establish a role for nitric oxide (NO)/cGMP signaling in transducing the stimulus of gravity to directed polarization of the spores. Application of specific NO donors and scavengers inhibited the calcium-dependent gravity response in a dose-dependent manner. the effects of NO donor exposure were antagonized by application of NO scavenger compounds. Similarly, the guanylate cyclase inhibitors 6-anilino-5,8- quinolinedione and 1H-[1,2,4]oxadiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxalin, and the phosphodiesterase inhibitor Viagra, which modulate NO-dependent cGMP levels in the cells, disrupted gravity-directed cell polarity …

Fluorescent Polymer-Porous Silicon Microcavity Devices For Explosive Detection, Igor A. Levitsky, William B. Euler, N. Tokranova, A. Rose

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Conjugated polymers entrapped in porous silicon microcavity have been studied as optical sensors for low volatility explosives such as trinitrotoluene. The fluorescence spectra of entrapped polymers were modulated by the microcavity via a spectral “hole” that matches the resonance peak of the microcavity reflectance. Exposure of the porous silicon microcavity containing entrapped polymer to explosives vapor results in a red shift of the resonance peak and the spectral hole, accompanied by the quenching of the fluorescence. This multiplexed response provides multiple monitoring parameters, enabling the development of an optical sensor array for the detection of target explosive vapor.
