Delimitation Of Major Lineages Within Cuscuta Subgenus Grammica (Convolvulaceae) Using Plastid And Nuclear Dna Sequences, Saša Stefanović, Maria Kuzmina, Mihai Costea

Biology Faculty Publications

Subgenus Grammica, the largest and most diverse group in the parasitic genus Cuscuta, includes ~130 species distributed primarily throughout the New World, with Mexico as its center of diversity. To circumscribe the subgenus ans assess the relationships among its major lineages, we conducted the first phylogenetic study of Grammica using plastid trnL F and nrITS sequences from a wide taxonomic sampling covering its morphological, physiological, and geographical diversiity. With the exception of of one species belonging elsewhere, the subgenus was found to be monophyletic. The results further indicate the presence of 15 well supported major clades within Grammica …

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Structured population models are increasingly used in decision making, but typically have many entries that are unknown or highly uncertain. We present an approach for the systematic analysis of the effect of uncertainties on long‐term population growth or decay. Many decisions for threatened and endangered species are made with poor or no information. We can still make decisions under these circumstances in a manner that is highly defensible, even without making assumptions about the distribution of uncertainty, or limiting ourselves to discussions of single, infinitesimally small changes in the parameters. Suppose that the model (determined by the data) for the …

An Examination Of Everyday Talk In Stepfamily Systems, Paul Schrodt, Dawn O. Braithwaite, Jordan Soliz, Stacy Tye-Williams, Aimee Miller, Emily Lamb Normand, Meredith Marko Harrigan

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This study explored frequencies of everyday talk in stepfamilies and the extent to which such frequencies of talk differed according to family relationship type. Participants included a parent, stepparent, and stepchild from 114 stepfamilies. Across relationship types, stepfamily members reported catching up, joking around, and recapping the day’s events most frequently and interrogating family members least frequently. Significant differences in frequencies of everyday talk across different relational dyads emerged for all three members of the stepfamily system. However, relatively few differences emerged in stepchildren’s reported frequencies of everyday talk with their stepparents and their nonresidential parents.

We report the first trial of candidate malaria vaccine antigen FMP1, a 42 kDa fragment from the C-terminus of merozoite surface protein-1 (MSP-1) from the 3D7 strain of Plasmodium falciparum, in an endemic area. Forty adult male and female residents of western Kenya were enrolled to receive 3 doses of either FMP1/AS02A or Imovax® rabies vaccine by intra-deltoid injection on a 0, 1, 2 month schedule. Thirty-seven volunteers received all three immunizations and 38 completed the 12-month evaluation period. Slightly more recipients of the FMP1/AS02A vaccine experienced any instance of pain at 24 h post-immunization than in the Imovax® group …

Livestock On The Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument: A Summary Of Stocking Rates, Utilization, And Management, Paul E. Hosten, Henry Whitridge, Dulcey Schuster, John Alexander Jan 2007

Livestock On The Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument: A Summary Of Stocking Rates, Utilization, And Management, Paul E. Hosten, Henry Whitridge, Dulcey Schuster, John Alexander

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications

This paper describes range management related practices to provide a historic and landscape context for studies examining the influence of livestock on objects of biological interest within the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument. Historic records show livestock numbers increased rapidly following initial settlement by Euro-Americans. Anecdotal data suggests that stocking rates early in the last century were greater than current stocking rates by at least an order of magnitude. Historic unregulated season-long use of the uplands during the spring, summer and fall resulted in severe environmental degradation. Disagreements between livestock operators and the desire of agency personnel to improve the condition of …

A Qualitative Study Of The Self -Concept Of Underprivileged Adolescents Attending Ryves Youth Center At Etling Hall, Kristy Ann Miller

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Using a qualitative approach, this study provided interpretative analysis of the self-concept of underprivileged adolescents attending Ryves Youth Center at Etling Hall, a youth center located in Terre Haute, Indiana. The researcher used triangulation to compare and contrast participant observations, volunteer comments, and adolescent interviews to form a theory about their level of self-concept. The researcher then referred to the data collected during the literature review to compare the self-concept of economically disadvantage youth with their more affluent peers. Through this comparison, it was found that while the research supports the theory that adolescents from poverty-stricken environments tend to show …

With 2005 retail sales close to $4.8 million, cultured dairy products are driving the growth of dairy foods consumption. Starter cultures are of great industrial significance in that they play a vital role in the manufacturing, flavor, and texture development of fermented dairy foods. Furthermore, additional interest in starter bacteria has been generated because of the data accumulating on the potential health benefits of these organisms. Today, starter cultures for fermented foods are developed mainly by design rather than by the traditional screening methods and trial and error. Advances in genetics and molecular biology have provided opportunities for genomic studies …

A General Equilibrium Analysis Of Pesticide Resistance, Kenneth S. Lyon Jan 2007

A General Equilibrium Analysis Of Pesticide Resistance, Kenneth S. Lyon

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Pesticides have value because they help farmers control pests that destroy crops and decrease yields; however, their use will lead to insecticide resistance. In addition, their use has unintended other effects. These stem in part from pesticide residues on food and application drift that exposes humans and other non-target biologic populations to toxic agents. We analyze these interactions in a stochastic general equilibrium optimal control model. The necessary conditions of an optimal path are examined to identify the roles that Integrated Pest Management, spraying and pest resistant crops, and biological research can play along the optimal time path. Because the …

Minimizing the impact of invasive alien species (IAS) on islands and elsewhere requires researchers to provide cogent information on the environmental and socioeconomic consequences of IAS to the public and policy makers. Unfortunately, this information has not been readily available owing to a paucity of scientific research and the failure of the scientific community to make their findings readily available to decision makers. This review explores the vulnerability of islands to biological invasion, reports on environmental and socioeconomic impacts of IAS on islands and provides guidance and information on technical resources that can help minimize the effects of IAS in …

Assessing Invasive Alien Species Across Multiple Spatial Scales: Working Globally And Locally, Laura A. Meyerson, Richard N. Mack, Betsy Von Holle

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Quantitative investigations on invasive alien species (IAS) across multiple spatial scales are needed because biological invasions often encompass enormous expanses in both donor and invaded ranges and because the immigrants may be carried great distances between these ranges. Although invasion biology is rich in anecdotes, translation of this information into generalizations remains limited by technical shortcomings in data acquisition, inconsistent data assembly, and the continuing search for meaningful indices of the impact of IAS. Much better justification of and greater opportunities to combat IAS could be achieved by distilling all information for IAS into spatially explicit case histories and synthetic …
