Kiloclips And Millipens: An Introduction To Units Of Measure, Matthew D. Bannerman, Casey J. Brown, Doug Martin Jan 2007

Kiloclips And Millipens: An Introduction To Units Of Measure, Matthew D. Bannerman, Casey J. Brown, Doug Martin

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

This article presents a physical science activity for introducing units of measure and the role of human beings in deciding units of measure and their standards. These important science ideas are introduced through inquiry, and in a way that makes this activity appropriate for the beginning of the school year. The manner that this activity is done promotes mental engagement, collaboration, and a deeper understanding of the targeted concepts. In doing so, it helps set expectations for the entire course that students will be actively engaged in learning. The activity uses common objects to serve as standards for mass and …

Can A Bird Build-A-Beak? Using Inquiry To Address Student Misconceptions About Animal Adaptation, Katherine Larson, Mandy Kemp Jan 2007

Can A Bird Build-A-Beak? Using Inquiry To Address Student Misconceptions About Animal Adaptation, Katherine Larson, Mandy Kemp

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The fifth grade activity presented here is a modified version of a common cookbook approach to teaching animal adaptations. The original activity gave step-by-step directions that provided few opportunities for students to be engaged in deep thinking. In presenting our version of the activity, we make clear the critical role of the teacher in promoting higher order thinking and engagement. This animal adaptation activity helps students understand how the structure of various bird beaks determines the type of food it can successfully acquire and eat. This activity addresses two common misconceptions: that animals choose their adaptations and that animals adapt …

It's Alive! I Think . . .: Students Investigate What Defines Something As Living, Garrett Hall, Jesse Wilcox Jan 2007

It's Alive! I Think . . .: Students Investigate What Defines Something As Living, Garrett Hall, Jesse Wilcox

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Students often have misconceptions about what makes something alive or not, and few have a concept of what characterizes living things similar to that of biologists. The activity presented here mentally engages students in an inquiry-based way to teach students about the characteristics of life that will be revisited throughout the school year. We also use this activity to explicitly draw students' attention to effective inquiry skills, cooperative learning, and promote a deep understanding of the nature of science. The activity described here promotes National Science Education Content Standards A, C, and G, and Iowa Teaching Standards 1-6.

A Summer Full Of Science: Creating Summer Science Education Opportunities For Elementary Children, Deanna Savits, Ramona Satre Jan 2007

A Summer Full Of Science: Creating Summer Science Education Opportunities For Elementary Children, Deanna Savits, Ramona Satre

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Science learning shouldn't stop when school is out for the summer. Opportunities abound to build a presence for science during the summer months (Hymer, 2005). Distances and finances to offer minds-on, hands-on science instruction sometimes restrict those living in rural communities. This article addresses how one small, rural school district successfully developed, planned and carried out a one-day summer science camp by enlisting the help of local high school volunteers. This summer science camp serves as an example of how an idea can grow and touch the lives of many others. This article promotes National Science Education Content Standard A …

Rock Glaciers In Central Colorado, U.S.A., As Indicators Of Holocene Climate Change, Kurt A. Refsnider, Keith A. Brugger Jan 2007

Rock Glaciers In Central Colorado, U.S.A., As Indicators Of Holocene Climate Change, Kurt A. Refsnider, Keith A. Brugger

Geology Publications

We measured thalli diameters of the lichen Rhizocarpon subgenus Rhizocarpon on 48 individual lobes of 18 rock glaciers and rock glacier complexes in the Elk Mountains and Sawatch Range of central Colorado. Cumulative probability distribution and K-means clustering analyses were used to separate lichen thalli measurements into statistically-distinct groups, each interpreted as representing a discrete episode of rock glacier activity driven by an interval of cooler climate. Lichen ages for these episodes were assigned using a growth curve developed for Rhizocarpon geographicum in the nearby Front Range. An early Neoglacial episode, ca. 3080 yr BP, is correlative to other glacial …

The current financial and fuel crises threaten food security in poorer nations and among the poor in wealthier countries. Sustainable food production benefits communities and their food supply and can maintain farming systems in less developed agricultural regions. Many small farmers have long practiced organic agriculture, but face pressure to adopt green revolution farming, using chemicals and commercial seed. Some are resisting this, but lack the technology to apply organic methods on a larger scale. Cuba provides an instructive example of a nation that confronted a sudden food and fuel crisis by adopting organic agricultural technologies across production systems that …

Functional Genomic Analysis Supports Conservation Of Function Among Cellulose Synthase-Like A Gene Family Members And Suggests Diverse Roles Of Mannans In Plants, Aaron H. Liepman, C. Joseph Naim, William G.T. Willats, Iben Sørensen, Alison W. Roberts, Kenneth Keegstra Jan 2007

Functional Genomic Analysis Supports Conservation Of Function Among Cellulose Synthase-Like A Gene Family Members And Suggests Diverse Roles Of Mannans In Plants, Aaron H. Liepman, C. Joseph Naim, William G.T. Willats, Iben Sørensen, Alison W. Roberts, Kenneth Keegstra

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Mannan polysaccharides are widespread among plants, where they serve as structural elements in cell walls, as carbohydrate reserves, and potentially perform other important functions. Previous work has demonstrated that members of the cellulose synthase-like A (CslA) family of glycosyltransferases from Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), guar (Cyamopsis tetragonolobus), and Populus trichocarpa catalyze β-1,4-mannan and glucomannan synthase reactions in vitro. Mannan polysaccharides and homologs of CslA genes appear to be present in all lineages of land plants analyzed to date. In many plants, the CslA genes are members of extended multigene families; however, it is not known whether …

Uniquely Alike: A Review Of Great With Child: On Becoming A Mother, Melanie Springer Mock

Faculty Publications - Department of English

Excerpt: "Considering my own insecurities, I began reading Debra Rienstra's Great with Child: On Becoming a Mother with some caution, as the book promised to take its readers on "the fascinating journey of understanding the power and meaning of birth." An acquaintance at a professional conference had highly recommended the book upon discovering I was the mother of two small children -- but then, she had not known my boys were adopted. And thus, the first few pages of Rienstra's text set me on edge: here was another woman sharing her pregnancy woes and describing the "harrowing intensity of birth." …

Effects Of Endogenous Androgens On Pulmonary Microvascular Reactivity, James D. Dells Jan 2007

Effects Of Endogenous Androgens On Pulmonary Microvascular Reactivity, James D. Dells

McNair Scholars Journal

Previous studies involving large isolated pulmonary arteries have suggested that the administration of high concentrations of natural androgen produces acute vasodilation. This study examines the acute effects of testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), observed previously in large arteries, in small pulmonary arteries (SPA). Isolated segments of SPA taken from the lungs of Sus domestica (n = 4, mean outside diameter = 313 ± 26 μm) were doubly cannulated and perfused with physiologic saline solution (PSS). The vessels were also simultaneously superfused in PSS and pressurized to 17mmHg. After a period of equilibration, the observed trend of the SPA to both …

Addressing Sensitive Issues Through Picture Books, Dorothy N. Bowen, Melissa Schutt

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty and Staff Scholarship

It was a Wednesday morning, and the class of pre-service elementary teachers was discussing sensitive topics in children's picture books. Melissa had prepared several tables with representative literature dealing with topics such as divorce, adoption, sexuality, religion, and death, and students were reading and discussing the books. Suddenly Dorothy noticed a student clutching one of the books to her chest and smiling. Dorothy walked over to her and the student said, "I love this book. There were no books like this when I was a little girl."
