Secular Trends In The Association Of Socio-Economic Position With Self-Reported Dietary Attributes And Biomarkers In The Us Population: National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey (Nhanes) 1971–1975 To Nhanes 1999–2002, Ashima K. Kant, Barry I. Graubard
Publications and Research
Objective: Recent reports suggest persistence of health disparities related to socioeconomic position (SEP). To understand if diet may be a contributor to these trends, we examined secular trends in the association of diet and indicators of SEP from 1971–1975 to 1999–2002.
Design: We used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) I (1971–1975), II (1976–1980), III (1988–1994) and 1999–2002 to examine the independent associations of poverty income ratio (PIR) and education with diet and biomarkers of diet and disease in 25–74-year-olds (n ¼ 36 600). We used logistic and linear regression methods to adjust for multiple covariates …

Feral Swine Management For Conservation Of An Imperiled Wetland Habitat: Florida’S Vanishing Seepage Slopes, Richard M. Engeman, Amanda Stevens, John Allen, Jon Dunlap, Marty Dunlap, Dennis Teague, Bernice Constantin
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Only 1% of the original extent of Florida’s seepage slope habitat remains, with Eglin Air Force Base containing some of the largest tracts. Feral swine damage is one of the greatest threats to this wetland habitat. We conducted a multi-year study to evaluate the impacts of sport hunting and supplemental swine removal on damage to seepage slopes. Prior to initiation of removal in 2003, swine damage to seepage slopes in the portion of the base closed to hunting averaged 25.0%, over twice the 10.9% losses in the portion open to hunting. After less than one year of supplemental removal, damage in …

Mountain Beaver Home Ranges, Habitat Use, And Population Dynamics In Washington, W. M. Arjo, R. E. Huenefeld, D. L. Nolte
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The mountain beaver (Aplodontia rufa (Rafinesque, 1817)), endemic to western North America, is the only extant member of the family Aplodontidae. Limited information on movements and habitat use throughout the species' range is available. We radio-collared 41 mountain beavers to determine home ranges, dispersal, habitat use, and population densities on two managed forest sites in coastal Washington. Both sites were recently harvested for timber. The Donovan site (16.6 ha) was treated with herbicide before seedling planting and the Sylvia site (8.9 ha) was not treated. Mountain beaver home ranges (Donovan: 4.18 ± 0.81 ha; Sylvia: 1.39 ± 0.4 ha) …

Detection Of Micrometastatic Tumor Cells In Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma. A Possible Predictor Of Recurrences?, Kenan Guney, Burcak Yoldas, Gulay Ozbilim, Alper T. Derin, Sule Sarihan, Esor Balkan
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the presence of micrometastatic tumor cells in the peripheral blood samples of the patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and to determine whether the presence of micrometastatic cells had any biological relevance in terms of local recurrences or metastasis during a follow-up period of 3 years. METHODS: We included 21 consecutive patients with untreated primary HNSCC admitted to the Ear Nose and Throat Department of Akdeniz University Medical School, Antalya, Turkey between February and October 2002. Squamous carcinoma cells in peripheral blood samples of these patients prior to surgery were detected via a magnetic …
Toward A Biopsychosocial Understanding Of The Patient-Physician Relationship: An Emerging Dialogue, Herbert M. Adler
Toward A Biopsychosocial Understanding Of The Patient-Physician Relationship: An Emerging Dialogue, Herbert M. Adler
Department of Family & Community Medicine Faculty Papers
Complexity theory has been used to view the patient-physician relationship as constituted by complex responsive processes of relating. It describes an emergent, psychosocial relational process through which patients and physicians continually and reciprocally influence each other's behavior and experience. As psychosocial responses are necessarily biopsychosocial responses, patients and physicians must likewise be influencing each other's psychobiology. This mutual influence may be subjectively experienced as empathy, and may be skillfully employed by the clinician to directly improve the patient's psychobiology.
Theoretical Analysis Of Strong-Axis Bending Mode Vibrations For Resonant Microcantilever (Bio)Chemical Sensors In Gas Or Liquid Phase, Isabelle Dufour, Stephen M. Heinrich, Fabien Josse
Theoretical Analysis Of Strong-Axis Bending Mode Vibrations For Resonant Microcantilever (Bio)Chemical Sensors In Gas Or Liquid Phase, Isabelle Dufour, Stephen M. Heinrich, Fabien Josse
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The frequency stability, sensitivity, and limit of detection of a coated-cantilever chemical sensor operating in a dynamic mode are mainly determined by its mechanical quality factor. While a coated-cantilever operating in the gas phase exhibits a large reduction in quality factor, immersion in liquids results in an even greater reduction in the Q-factor due to displaced fluid mass and losses in the surrounding liquid. In this paper, two different bending vibration modes are studied in order to minimize both the losses induced by the surrounding medium and the displaced fluid mass, thus increasing the quality factor and sensitivity and improving …

Russia, The United States, And The Caucasus, R. Craig Nation Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
In the post-Soviet period, the Caucasus region has been a source of chronic instability and conflict. Many factors have ensured that the region would become a source of significant international engagement and concern. Conflicting interests that have made Russian-American relations in the region highly competitive are addressed as well as areas of shared priorities and mutual advantage that may provide a foundation for containing conflict and heading off further regional disintegration. However they are resolved, regional issues emerging from the Caucasus will have a significant impact upon the larger climate of U.S.-Russian relations in the years to come.

Understanding Indian Insurgencies: Implications For Counterinsurgency Operations In The Third World, Durga Madhab (John) Mitra Deputy Inspector General
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
A simple linear model for India has been developed to demonstrate how the degree of inaccessibility of an area, the strength of separate social identity of its population, and the amount of external influence on the area determine the propensity of that area for insurgency. Implications of the Indian model for various aspects of counterinsurgency strategy for the Third World, including economic development, the role of democracy, social and political autonomy, and counterinsurgency operations are discussed. Recommendations for effective counterinsurgency strategy and for long-term stability in these countries are included. India is very complex and provides an ideal window for …

Colombia And The United States--The Partnership: But What Is The Endgame?, Myles R. R. Frechette Ambassador
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
American Ambassador to Colombia, 1994-97, Myles R. R. Frechette provides authoritative, eloquent, and impassioned perspectives on both the achievements and failures of American and Colombian efforts. He argues that American policy made analytical errors that need to be rectified, including underestimating the long-term complexity and interrelated nature of the problem, while both nations overestimated the amount of support that Colombia would receive from the international community. Moreover, nation-building and the rule of law are strategic imperatives which American policy must take seriously. Finally, it is critical to appreciate that Colombian cultural characteristics sharply influence what Colombians will do on their …

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
A 2-yr study was conducted to document the influence of selected buffalograss, Buchloe dactyloides (Nuttall) Engelmann, management practices (three mowing heights and five nitrogen levels) on the seasonal abundance of the western chinch bug, Blissus occiduus Barber (Heteroptera: Lygaeidae), and its beneficial arthropods. Vacuum, pitfall, and sticky traps samples were collected every 14 d from the middle of May through October from western chinch bug-resistant (‘Prestige’) and -susceptible (‘378’) buffalograss management plots. In total, 27,374 and 108,908 western chinch bugs were collected in vacuum and pitfall traps, respectively. More than 78% of all western chinch bugs were collected from the …

Understanding And Modeling The Effect Of Temperature And Daylength On Soybean Phenology Under High-Yield Conditions, T. D. Setiyono, Albert Weiss, James E. Specht, A. M. Bastidas, Kenneth G. Cassman, A. Dobermann
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Temperature and photoperiod can be used to simulate soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr) phenology because they serve as surrogates for complex biochemical pathways leading to the appearance of certain developmental stages at the whole plant level. We developed a soybean phenology model (SOYDEV) which utilizes non-linear temperature and photoperiod functions and separates floral induction and post-induction for simulating time of flowering. This model accurately simulated the dynamics of vegetative development, final node number and the occurrence of major reproductive stages such as flowering (R1), beginning pod (R3), mid-pod elongation (R3,5), beginning seed (R …

Variation In Herbivore-Mediated Indirect Effects Of An Invasive Plant On A Native Plant, F. Leland Russell, Svata M. Louda, Tatyana A. Rand, Stephen D. Kachman
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Theory predicts that damage by a shared herbivore to a secondary host plant species may either be higher or lower in the vicinity of a preferred host plant species. To evaluate the importance of ecological factors, such as host plant proximity and density, in determining the direction and strength of such herbivore-mediated indirect effects, we quantified oviposition by the exotic weevil Rhinocyllus conicus on the native wavyleaf thistle Cirsium undulatum in midgrass prairie on loam soils in the upper Great Plains, USA. Over three years (2001–2003), the number of eggs laid by R. conicus on C. undulatum always decreased significantly …
Conflict Between Translation Initiation And Elongation In Vertebrate Mitochondrial Genomes, Xuhua Xia, Huang Huang, Malisa Carullo, Esther Betran, Estuko N. Moriyama
Conflict Between Translation Initiation And Elongation In Vertebrate Mitochondrial Genomes, Xuhua Xia, Huang Huang, Malisa Carullo, Esther Betran, Estuko N. Moriyama
Papers in Genetics
The strand-biased mutation spectrum in vertebrate mitochondrial genomes results in an AC-rich L-strand and a GT-rich H-strand. Because the L-strand is the sense strand of 12 protein-coding genes out of the 13, the third codon position is overall strongly AC-biased. The wobble site of the anticodon of the 22 mitochondrial tRNAs is either U or G to pair with the most abundant synonymous codon, with only one exception. The wobble site of Met-tRNA is C instead of U, forming the Watson- Crick match with AUG instead of AUA, the latter being much more frequent than the former. This has been …
Hemoglobin Function And Physiological Adaptation To Hypoxia In High-Altitude Mammals, Jay F. Storz
Hemoglobin Function And Physiological Adaptation To Hypoxia In High-Altitude Mammals, Jay F. Storz
Jay F. Storz Publications
Understanding the biochemical mechanisms that enable high-altitude animals to survive and function under conditions of hypoxic stress can provide important insights into the nature of physiological adaptation. Evidence from a number of high-altitude vertebrates indicates that modifications of hemoglobin function typically play a key role in mediating an adaptive response to chronic hypoxia. Because much is known about structure– function relationships of mammalian hemoglobins and their physiological role in oxygen transport, the study of hemoglobin variation in high-altitude mammals holds much promise for understanding the nature of adaptation to hypoxia from the level of blood biochemistry to the level of …
The Study Of Adaptation And Speciation In The Genomic Era, Jay F. Storz, Hopi E. Hoekstra
The Study Of Adaptation And Speciation In The Genomic Era, Jay F. Storz, Hopi E. Hoekstra
Jay F. Storz Publications
The availability of complete genome sequences and genetic linkage maps for a growing number of mammalian species is opening up exciting new opportunities for studies of evolutionary change in natural populations. For example, multilocus mapping approaches hold the promise of identifying the specific genetic changes that underlie ecological adaptation and reproductive isolation. The fact that many of the genomic resources that have been developed for Mus and Rattus are transferable to other muroid rodents means that roughly 25% of all mammalian species can now be considered ‘‘genome-enabled’’ study organisms to varying degrees. The transferability of genomic resources between model organisms …
Purification Method Directly Influences Effectiveness Of An Epidermal Growth Factor-Coupled Targeting Agent For Noninvasive Tumor Detection In Mice, Joy L. Kovar, William M. Volcheck, Jiyan Chen, Melanie A. Simpson
Purification Method Directly Influences Effectiveness Of An Epidermal Growth Factor-Coupled Targeting Agent For Noninvasive Tumor Detection In Mice, Joy L. Kovar, William M. Volcheck, Jiyan Chen, Melanie A. Simpson
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Receptor targeting is an effective method of enhancing fluorescence signal in tumors for optical imaging. We previously used epidermal growth factor (EGF) conjugated to IRDye 800CW to detect and track orthotopic prostate tumors in mice. In this study, our goal was to identify a reliable assay for targeting agent integrity in vitro that correlated with signal strength in vivo. Binding of IRDye 800CW EGF to intact A431 human epidermoid carcinoma cells was quantified in a microplate assay. Specificity was confirmed by competition with unlabeled EGF or monoclonal antibody blocking. Biological activity of intact and damaged targeting agents relative to unlabeled …

Evaluating Climatic And Non-Climatic Influences On Ion Chemistry In Natural And Man-Made Lakes Of Nebraska, Usa, D. M. Bennett, Sherilyn C. Fritz, John C. Holz, Aris A. Holz, Vitaly A. Zlotnik
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Conductivity and major ion chemistry data were analyzed for a suite of Nebraska (USA) natural lakes, reservoirs, sand pits, and barrow pits to evaluate the magnitude of climatic versus non-climatic influence on ionic concentration and composition. In both natural lakes and sand and barrow pits, conductivity is positively related to longitude and reflects decreasing effective moisture from east to west. Reservoirs showed no relationship between lake conductivity and location, probably because the reservoirs are very strongly influenced by groundwater and surface water inflow and have shorter residence times relative to the other lake types. At smaller spatial scales, conductivity among …
