Community Ecology Of Bats In Southern Lower Michigan, With Emphasis On Roost Selection By Myotis, Lisa Winhold Feb 2007

Community Ecology Of Bats In Southern Lower Michigan, With Emphasis On Roost Selection By Myotis, Lisa Winhold

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

I studied the roosting niche of three sympatric species of Myotis (little brown bat, M. lucifugus; northern bat, M. septentrionalis; and Indiana bat, M. sodalis) and examined changes in composition of the entire bat community in southern Lower Michigan over long periods. Little brown bats roosted in buildings, whereas northern and Indiana bats used trees. Northern and Indiana bats differed primarily in species of tree used, whether the tree was living or dead, and use of cavities or loose bark. There were no differences among species in composition of landscapes surrounding roosts. I also netted bats during 2004–2006 and compared …

Blackbird Use Of Wildlife Conservation Sunflower Plots, George M. Linz, Jonathan M. Raetzman, Heath M. Hagy, H. Jeffrey Homan, William J. Bleier Feb 2007

Blackbird Use Of Wildlife Conservation Sunflower Plots, George M. Linz, Jonathan M. Raetzman, Heath M. Hagy, H. Jeffrey Homan, William J. Bleier

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

In North Dakota, annual blackbird damage to sunflower ranges from $5-10 million. Blackbird damage to ripening sunflower has forced some growers to plant alternative crops. From 2004 to 2006, USDA-Wildlife Services cost-shared Wildlife Conservation Sunflower Plots (WCSP) with sunflower growers. The objective of the WCSP was to provide blackbirds an attractive nearby alternative food source to reduce damage to commercial fields. A secondary benefit of WCSP was to provide a safe-haven for other wildlife that frequently use shelterbelts and wetlands along the edges of sunflower fields. In 2004 (n=13), 2005 (n=21), and 2006 (n=25), sunflower damage in the WCSP’s was …

Is Oak Establishment In Old‐Fields And Savanna Openings Context Dependent?, Ian A. Dickie, Stefan A. Schnitzer, P. B. Reich, S. E. Hobbie

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

  1. Multiple factors are known to influence tree seedling establishment, yet the degree to which these factors depend on each other and on spatial context is largely unknown. We examined the influence of herbaceous competition and water and nitrogen limitations on tree seedling establishment as functions of distance from trees (within‐site spatial context) and site history (between‐site spatial context; as old‐fields vs. savanna openings).
  2. We grew Quercus ellipsoidalis E.J. Hill (pin oak) and Q. macrocarpa Michx. (bur oak) seedlings for 3 years in abandoned agricultural fields and savannas in central Minnesota, USA, near and distant from adult oak trees, with and …

Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research

BACKGROUND: Neuroblastomas are characterized by chromosomal alterations with biological and clinical significance. We analyzed paired blood and primary tumor samples from 22 children with high-risk neuroblastoma for loss of heterozygosity (LOH) and DNA copy number change using the Affymetrix 10K single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array.

FINDINGS: Multiple areas of LOH and copy number gain were seen. The most commonly observed area of LOH was on chromosome arm 11q (15/22 samples; 68%). Chromosome 11q LOH was highly associated with occurrence of chromosome 3p LOH: 9 of the 15 samples with 11q LOH had concomitant 3p LOH (P = 0.016). Chromosome 1p …

The Production Of Law (And Cinema), Amnon Reichman Feb 2007

The Production Of Law (And Cinema), Amnon Reichman

ExpressO

The essay addresses the emergence of the law and cinema discourse, its methodological limits, and its intellectual and pragmatic potential. The essay suggests that current arguments within the discourse can be classified into structural arguments (referring to the manner in which cinematic and judicial practices are "structured" in society), methodological arguments (referring to law and cinema as methodological instruments for the examination of certain clashes of interests), and hermeneutic arguments (referring to law and cinema as engaged in interpretative functions that illuminate aspects of the human condition). Beyond taxonomy, the essay suggests that situating law alongside cinema is important because …

The Internet And The Project Of Communications Law, Susan P. Crawford Feb 2007

The Internet And The Project Of Communications Law, Susan P. Crawford

ExpressO

The internet offers the potential for economic growth stemming from online human communications, but recent industry and government actions have disfavored these possibilities by treating the internet like a content-delivery supply chain. This article recommends that the internet be at the center of communications policy and that laws affecting internet access be evaluated in terms of whether they further U.S. economic growth by facilitating increased emergent online diversity. It criticizes the nearly exclusive focus of communications policy on the private economic success of infrastructure and “application” providers, and suggests that communications policy be focused on facilitating communications themselves.

Timescale Dependence Of Environmental And Plant‐Mediated Controls On Ch4 Flux In A Temperate Fen, Claire C. Treat, Jill L. Bubier, Ruth K. Varner, Patrick M. Crill

Faculty Publications

This study examined daily, seasonal, and interannual variations in CH4 emissions at a temperate peatland over a 5‐year period. We measured net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE), CH4 flux, water table depth, peat temperature, and meteorological parameters weekly from the summers (1 May to 31 August) of 2000 through 2004 at Sallie's Fen in southeastern New Hampshire, United States. Significant interannual differences, driven by high variability of large individual CH4 fluxes (ranging from 8.7 to 3833.1 mg CH4 m−2 d−1) occurring in the late summer, corresponded with a decline in water table level and an increase in air and peat temperature. …

Final Report Of The Northeast Wisconsin Karst Task Force G3836, Kevin Erb, Ron Stieglitz Feb 2007

Final Report Of The Northeast Wisconsin Karst Task Force G3836, Kevin Erb, Ron Stieglitz

KIP Articles

Northeastern Wisconsin has experienced groundwater quality problems for many years. Both anecdotal and documented reports of water well contamination abound in the region. Voluntary homeowner well testing programs and sponsored research projects have indicated that a significant proportion of the water supply wells were contaminated at sometime during the year. For example, a voluntary program in Calumet County indicated that from 4.6% to 47% of the wells tested contained E.Colior were unsafe for either bacteria or nitrate respectively. Recent incidents of spring manure runoff and well contamination further highlighted the problem and focused the public's attention. In order to have …
