Is Gene Therapy A Good Therapeutic Approach For Hiv-Positive Patients?, Jai G. Marathe, Dawn P. Wooley
Is Gene Therapy A Good Therapeutic Approach For Hiv-Positive Patients?, Jai G. Marathe, Dawn P. Wooley
Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications
Despite advances and options available in gene therapy for HIV-1 infection, its application in the clinical setting has been challenging. Although published data from HIV-1 clinical trials show safety and proof of principle for gene therapy, positive clinical outcomes for infected patients have yet to be demonstrated. The cause for this slow progress may arise from the fact that HIV is a complex multi-organ system infection. There is uncertainty regarding the types of cells to target by gene therapy and there are issues regarding insufficient transduction of cells and long-term expression. This paper discusses state-of-the-art molecular approaches against HIV-1 and …

Background: Serum- and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase-1 (SGK1) increases CFTR Cl currents in Xenopus oocytes by an unknown mechanism. Because SGK increases the plasma membrane expression of other ion channels, the goal of this paper was to test the hypothesis that SGK1 stimulates CFTR Cl currents by increasing the number of CFTR Cl channels in the plasma membrane. Methods: CFTR Cl currents were measured in Xenopus oocytes by the two-electrode voltage clamp technique, and CFTR in the plasma membrane was determined by laser scanning confocal microscopy. Results: wt-SGK1 stimulated CFTR Cl currents by 42% and increased the amount of CFTR in the …

Birds Of The Southern Pacific Lowlands Of Guatemala With A Review Of Icterus Gularis, Robert W. Dickerman
Special Publications
The avifauna of the southern Pacific lowlands of Guatemala was studied in conjunction with research on the ecology of mosquito-transmitted encephalitis viruses during the years 1967 to 1977. Studies were carried out in the vicinity of La Avellana, Santa Rosa Department, near the coastal village of Monterico. The occurrence and relative abundance of 224 species are documented here; 198 of those species are represented by specimens. Thirteen species were recorded for the first time in Guatemala, and 28 species for the first time in the Pacific lowlands. Relative abundance and dates of occurrence are presented for 85 species of migrants. …

Light-induced conversion of water to molecular oxygen by Photosystem II (PSII) is one of the most important enzymatic reactions in the biosphere. PSII is a multisubunit membrane protein complex with numerous associated cofactors, but it continually undergoes assembly and disassembly due to frequent light-mediated damage as a result of its normal function. Thus, at any instant, there is heterogeneity in the subunit compositions of PSII complexes within the cell. In particular, cyanobacterial PSII complexes have five associated extrinsic proteins, PsbO, PsbP, PsbQ, PsbU, and PsbV. However, little is known about the interactions of the more recently identified PsbQ protein with …

Taking Responsibility Seriously: The Best Interests Of The Child And Spousal Laws, Shahar Lifshitz
Taking Responsibility Seriously: The Best Interests Of The Child And Spousal Laws, Shahar Lifshitz
ExpressO
This article calls for a rethinking of the modern boundaries between the regulation of spousal relations and the regulation of parenthood, including joint parenthood. My main argument is that important legal rules that are currently at the core of spousal law possess a dramatic influence on children’s lives. Thus, I will critique the current legal regulation that limits the influence of the best interests of the child principle to the regime of law that is currently classified as parent law but almost completely ignores its application in regimes currently classified as spousal law.
Apart from the theoretical discussion concerning the …

Accessing Reproductive Technologies: Invisible Barriers, Indelible Harms, Judith F. Daar
ExpressO
The use and success of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) over the past decade has contributed perceptibly to family formation nationwide. Today, 3 of every 100 children born owe their existence to some form of assisted conception. Despite, or perhaps because of, its technical successes, a growing body of evidence suggests that barriers to ART are being constructed to prevent procreation among select populations. The article’s theme is one of harm, specifically the harm that befalls patients, physicians, offspring and society when fertility treatments are denied on the basis of personal characteristics, including race, marital status and sexual orientation. While ART …

Data Quality Assessment Of Ungated Flow Cytometry Data In High, Nolwenn Le Meur, Anthony Rossini, Maura Gasparetto, Clay Smith, Ryan R. Brinkman, Robert Gentleman
Bioconductor Project Working Papers
Background: The recent development of semi-automated techniques for staining and analyzing flow cytometry samples has presented new challenges. Quality control and quality assessment are critical when developing new high throughput technologies and their associated information services. Our experience suggests that significant bottlenecks remain in the development of high throughput flow cytometry methods for data analysis and display. Especially, data quality control and quality assessment are crucial steps in processing and analyzing high throughput flow cytometry data.
Methods: We propose a variety of graphical exploratory data analytic tools for exploring ungated flow cytometry data. We have implemented a number of specialized …
