Angiomyolipomas are benign tumors of the kidney which express phenotypes of smooth muscle, fat, and melanocytes. These tumors appear with increased frequency in the autosomal dominant disorder tuberous sclerosis and are the leading cause of morbidity in adults with tuberous sclerosis. While benign, these tumors are capable of provoking life threatening hemorrhage and replacement of the kidney parenchyma, resulting in renal failure. The histogenesis of these tumors is currently unclear, although currently, we believe these tumors arise from "perivascular epithelioid cells" of which no normal counterpart has been convincingly demonstrated. Recently, stem cell precursors have been recognized that can give …

Aldosterone plays a major role in the regulation of salt balance and the pathophysiology of cardiovascular and renal diseases. Many aldosterone-regulated genes--including that encoding the epithelial Na+ channel (ENaC), a key arbiter of Na+ transport in the kidney and other epithelia--have been identified, but the mechanisms by which the hormone modifies chromatin structure and thus transcription remain unknown. We previously described the basal repression of ENaCalpha by a complex containing the histone H3 Lys79 methyltransferase disruptor of telomeric silencing alternative splice variant a (Dot1a) and the putative transcription factor ALL1-fused gene from chromosome 9 (Af9) as well as the release …

A Mental Health Clinic For Toddlers With Developmental Delays And Behavior Problems, Robert A. Fox, Kathryn M. Keller, Patricia L. Grede, Ann M. Bartosz

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

A mental health clinic was developed for toddlers with developmental disabilities and significant behavior problems from families living in poverty. The clinic was a collaborative effort between a community-based Birth-to-Three agency and a university. The purpose of this clinic was threefold: to provide direct mental health services for these young children, to train graduate students to work with this population, and to begin to contribute to the limited research available in this area. This paper describes the clinical intake procedures and outcomes for the 81 children served by the clinic over a 2-year period. Referral concerns included tantrums, aggression, oppositional …

Adapting The Phylogenetic Program Fitch For Distributed Processing, Robert A. Dubin Mar 2007

Adapting The Phylogenetic Program Fitch For Distributed Processing, Robert A. Dubin

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The ability to reconstruct optimal phylogenies (evolutionary trees) based on objective criteria impacts directly on our understanding the relationships among organisms, including human evolution, as well as the spread of infectious disease. Numerous tree construction methods have been implemented for execution on single processors, however inferring large phylogenies using computationally intense algorithms can be beyond the practical capacity of a single processor. Distributed and parallel processing provides a means for overcoming this hurdle. FITCH is a freely available, single-processor implementation of a distance-based, tree-building algorithm commonly used by the biological community. Through an alternating least squares approach to branch length …

The levels of organization that exist in bacteria extend from macromolecules to populations. Evidence that there is also a level of organization intermediate between the macromolecule and the bacterial cell is accumulating. This is the level of hyperstructures. Here, we review a variety of spatially extended structures, complexes, and assemblies that might be termed hyperstructures. These include ribosomal or "nucleolar" hyperstructures; transertion hyperstructures; putative phosphotransferase system and glycolytic hyperstructures; chemosignaling and flagellar hyperstructures; DNA repair hyperstructures; cytoskeletal hyperstructures based on EF-Tu, FtsZ, and MreB; and cell cycle hyperstructures responsible for DNA replication, sequestration of newly replicated origins, segregation, compaction, and …

The Relationship Between Young Adults' Retrospective Perceptions Of Differential Parental Treatment, Quality Of The Childhood And Current Sibling Relationship And Current Psychological Adjustment, Tangela R. Clark Culpepper

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study explored the relations among young adults' perceptions of differential parental treatment, temperamental style, attitudes toward their childhood and current sibling relationships, and psychological adjustment. Participants included 87 college students and their siblings between the ages of 18 and 25 years. Students completed measures in small groups, and siblings completed the surveys via mail. The data were analyzed using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM; Kashy & Kenny, 1999). Results revealed that participants' perceptions of their sibling relationship during childhood were related to their current attitudes toward the relationship. In addition, siblings were in agreement regarding their overall attitudes toward …

Treatment Of The Common Carp (Cyprinus Carpio) Infected With Monogenetic Treatodes By Using Some Plant Extracts, Ali B. Al-Zubaidi, Fawzi S. Al-Zubadi, Furhan T. Mhaisen

Baghdad Science Journal

A series of experiments were conducted for the first time in Iraq to evaluate the efficiency of five plant leaves extracts (Ibicella lutea, Nerium oleander, Clerodendron inerme, Allium cepa and Eucalyptus spp.) in treating the common carp (Cyprinus carpio) infected with monogenetic trematodes of genera Dactylogyrus. Five different concentrations of such extracts were used to bathe fishes for 5,10,15,20 and 25 minutes. A concentration of 15% A. cepa for 25 minutes of bath exposure was affective in trematode eradication. Extracts of both Eucalyptus and N. oleander at a concentration of 10% each were also affective for ten minutes exposure. Extracts …

The Complex Cubi-Quintic Ginzburg-Landau Equation: Hopf Bifurcations Yielding Traveling Waves, S.C. Mancas, S. Roy Choudhury

Publications

In this paper we use a traveling wave reduction or a so{called spatial approxima- tion to comprehensively investigate the periodic solutions of the complex cubic{quintic Ginzburg{Landau equation. The primary tools used here are Hopf bifurcation theory and perturbation theory. Explicit results are obtained for the post{bifurcation periodic orbits and their stability. Generalized and degenerate Hopf bifurcations are also brie y considered to track the emergence of global structure such as homoclinic orbits.

Due Process Traditionalism, Cass R. Sunstein Mar 2007

Due Process Traditionalism, Cass R. Sunstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

In important cases, the Supreme Court has limited the scope of "substantive due process" by reference to tradition, but it has yet to explain why it has done so. Due process traditionalism might be defended in several distinctive ways. The most ambitious defense draws on a set of ideas associated with Edmund Burke and Friedrich Hayek, who suggested that traditions have special credentials by virtue of their acceptance by many minds. But this defense runs into three problems. Those who have participated in a tradition may not have accepted any relevant proposition; they might suffer from a systematic bias; and …

The Law School Matrix: Reforming Legal Education In A Culture Of Competition And Conformity, Susan Sturm, Lani Guinier Mar 2007

The Law School Matrix: Reforming Legal Education In A Culture Of Competition And Conformity, Susan Sturm, Lani Guinier

Vanderbilt Law Review

Law school reform is in the air. Many reformers agree that the prevailing law school model developed in the nineteenth century does not adequately prepare students to become effective twenty-first century lawyers. Langdell's case method, designed around private domestic law, appellate cases, and the Socratic method, increasingly fails to teach students "how to think like a lawyer" in the world students will occupy. The curriculum over-emphasizes adjudication and discounts many of the important global, transactional, and facilitative dimensions of legal practice. Law school has too little to do with what lawyers actually do and develops too little of the institutional, …

Middle grades are a time of transition and development. It is during this time, as students move through grades 6, 7, and 8, that the development of life skills, especially for those who have leadership potential become increasingly important. Within these few years engaged learning and the pedagogical tool of service-learning enhances the meaning and impact of traditional course content and offers potential in helping to develop leadership skills in middle grade students. The purpose of this study was to provide evidence of the effectiveness of a community service-learning project as related to the specific development of leadership skills. The …

Investigating Coastal Processes And Nitrate Levels In The Elkhorn Slough Using Real-Time Data, Lisa G. Adams, George I. Matsumoto Mar 2007

Investigating Coastal Processes And Nitrate Levels In The Elkhorn Slough Using Real-Time Data, Lisa G. Adams, George I. Matsumoto

Faculty Articles

The primary objective of this activity is to predict how coastal processes, such as tides, affect salinity, temperature, and nitrate levels in a type of estuary, called a slough. Real-time data from the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve in Monterey, California, will be used to test predictions. In addition to collecting, graphing, and interpreting real-time data, students will learn how nitrates enter the estuary, and they will gain a better understanding of the interconnectedness of all bodies of water, especially estuaries.

A Hidden Markov Model For Joint Estimation Of Genotype And Copy Number In High-Throughput Snp Chips, Robert B. Scharpf, Giovanni Parmigiani, Jonathan Pevnser, Ingo Ruczinski Feb 2007

A Hidden Markov Model For Joint Estimation Of Genotype And Copy Number In High-Throughput Snp Chips, Robert B. Scharpf, Giovanni Parmigiani, Jonathan Pevnser, Ingo Ruczinski

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Amplifications and deletions of chromosomal DNA, as well as copy-neutral loss of heterozygosity have been associated with diseases processes. High-throughput single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) arrays are useful for making genome-wide estimates of copy number and genotype calls. Because neighboring SNPs in high throughput SNP arrays are likely to have dependent copy number and genotype due to the underlying haplotype structure and linkage disequilibrium, hidden Markov models (HMM) may be useful for improving genotype calls and copy number estimates that do not incorporate information from nearby SNPs. We improve previous approaches that utilize a HMM framework for inference in high throughput …

Heritability Of Latent Period Estimated From Wild-Type And Selected Populations Of Puccinia Triticina, Jeffrey Lehman Feb 2007

Heritability Of Latent Period Estimated From Wild-Type And Selected Populations Of Puccinia Triticina, Jeffrey Lehman

Biology and Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

Durability of partially resistant wheat cultivars to wheat leaf rust depends on the amount of genetic variation in parasitic fitness within populations of the pathogen Puccinia triticina. To assess the durability of partial resistance, selection experiments were used to explore quantitative variation in parasitic fitness of P. triticina. Fungal populations 881-WT and 882-WT were selected for shortened latent period on partially resistant cvs. CI 13277 and Sw 72469-6 for multiple generations. Fitness components were measured for wild-type and selected fungal populations. Responses to selection and selection differentials were calculated, and broad-sense, realized heritabilities for latent period were estimated for wild-type …
