Falling In Love As A Heuristic For Mate Choice Decisions, Monica D. Burke Mar 2007

Falling In Love As A Heuristic For Mate Choice Decisions, Monica D. Burke

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Selecting a mate is one of the most important and complex decisions that we make in our lives. Research on human decision making has found that we often use simple rules of thumb or heuristics to facilitate complex decision-making tasks (e.g., Gigerenzer & Todd, 1999; Kahneman & Tversky, 1972, 1973; Tversky & Kahneman, 1974, 1983). Recent research has focused on the use of affect or emotion as heuristics that have a strong influence on a variety of decision making contexts (Damasio, 1994; Finucane, Peters, & Slovic, 2003; Loewenstein, Weber, Hsee, & Welch, 2001; Mellers, 2000). The emotion we most closely …

A Simulation-Based Approach For Evaluating Gene Expression Analyses, Carly Ruth Pendleton Mar 2007

A Simulation-Based Approach For Evaluating Gene Expression Analyses, Carly Ruth Pendleton

Theses and Dissertations

Microarrays enable biologists to measure differences in gene expression in thousands of genes simultaneously. The data produced by microarrays present a statistical challenge, one which has been met both by new modifications of existing methods and by completely new approaches. One of the difficulties with a new approach to microarray analysis is validating the method's power and sensitivity. A simulation study could provide such validation by simulating gene expression data and investigating the method's response to changes in the data; however, due to the complex dependencies and interactions found in gene expression data, such a simulation would be complicated and …

The Distribution Of Apolipoprotein E In Mouse Olfactory Epithelium, Britto Nathan, Sreenivas Nannapaneni, Salina Gairhe, Ikemefuna Nwosu, Robert Struble

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Previous studies from our laboratory suggest that apolipoprotein (apoE), a lipid transporting protein, facilitates olfactory nerve regeneration. We have shown that apoE is enriched in the olfactory nerve and around the glomeruli of the olfactory bulb (OB). The studies reported herein were undertaken to identify possible sources of apoE in the olfactory epithelium (OE). Immunoblotting results revealed apoE expression in the OE of wild-type (WT) mice, but not in apoE deficient/knockout (KO) mice. Immunohistochemical studies revealed that the perikarya and processes of sustentacular (Sus) cells expressed apoE-like immunoreactivity. Minimal neuronal apoE immunostaining was seen, although apoE was observed in the …

Distinct Iron Binding Property Of Two Putative Iron Donors For The Iron-Sulfur Cluster Assembly: Isca And The Bacterial Frataxin Ortholog Cyay Under Physiological And Oxidative Stress Conditions, Huangen Ding, Juanjuan Yang, Liana C. Coleman, Simon Yeung Mar 2007

Coleman, Simon Yeung

Faculty Publications

Frataxin, a small mitochondrial protein linked to the neurodegenerative disease Friedreich ataxia, has recently been proposed as an iron donor for the iron-sulfur cluster assembly. An analogous function has also been attributed to IscA, a key member of the iron-sulfur cluster assembly machinery found in bacteria, yeast, and humans. Here we have compared the iron binding property of IscA and the frataxin ortholog CyaY from Escherichia coli under physiological and oxidative stress conditions. In the presence of the thioredoxin reductase system, which emulates the intracellular redox potential, CyaY fails to bind any iron even at a 10-fold excess of iron …

Decision Analysis With Value Focused Thinking As A Methodology To Select Building For Deconstruction, Erika E. Maiorano Mar 2007

Decision Analysis With Value Focused Thinking As A Methodology To Select Building For Deconstruction, Erika E. Maiorano

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to examine the reuse and recycling of building materials on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. There are a variety of conflicting factors concerning the removal of a building and the model quantitatively evaluates alternatives with respect to the decision maker’s values. The research questions were addressed with both a comprehensive literature review as well as the implementation of the value focused thinking methodology. The model found that the temporary living facilities are the alternatives that achieve the highest value. The result of this research effort was a value model that aids decision makers in identifying …

Calibration Procedure For A Microscopic Traffic Simulation Model, Carole Turley Mar 2007

Calibration Procedure For A Microscopic Traffic Simulation Model, Carole Turley

Theses and Dissertations

The inputs to a microscopic traffic simulation model generally include quantitative, but immeasurable data describing driver behavior and vehicle performance characteristics. Engineers often use default values for parameters such as car-following sensitivity and gap acceptance because it can be difficult to obtain accurate estimates for these parameters. While recent research has indicated that the accuracy of a simulation model can significantly improve if driver behavior parameters are calibrated to local data, this is not a typical practice. Manual calibration of these parameters is often too time-consuming to be cost-effective. Researchers have applied automated calibration procedures using genetic algorithms to these …

Modeling In Situ Bioremediation Of Perchlorate-Contaminated Groundwater, Roland E. Secody Mar 2007

Modeling In Situ Bioremediation Of Perchlorate-Contaminated Groundwater, Roland E. Secody

Theses and Dissertations

Perchlorate-contaminated groundwater is a significant problem for the Department of Defense and the United States Air Force. An innovative technology was recently developed which uses dual-screened treatment wells to mix an electron donor into perchlorate-contaminated groundwater in order to effect in situ bioremediation of the perchlorate by indigenous perchlorate reducing bacteria without the need to extract the contaminated water from the subsurface. In this study, a model that simulates operation of the technology is calibrated and validated using 761 days of observational data obtained from a field-scale technology evaluation project. A genetic algorithm was used with the first 113 days …

Biofiltration As A Viable Alternative For Air Pollution Control At Department Of Defense Surface Coating Facilities, David M. Hudock Mar 2007

Biofiltration As A Viable Alternative For Air Pollution Control At Department Of Defense Surface Coating Facilities, David M. Hudock

Theses and Dissertations

Surface coating operations at aircraft depot facilities are common throughout the Department of Defense (DoD). During paint application processes at Navy and Marine Corps Fleet Readiness Centers (FRCs), spray paints emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) known to have harmful effects on human health and the environment. FRC East at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, does not control the emissions of VOCs from any of its paint booths. The purpose of this research is to determine if FRC East and its surrounding area can benefit both economically and environmentally from a biofiltration system for air pollution control (APC) rather than …

Euphotic Zone Depth: Its Derivation And Implication To Ocean-Color Remote Sensing, Zhongping Lee, Alan Weidemann, John Kindle, Robert Arnone, Kendall L. Carder, Curtiss Davis

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Euphotic zone depth, z1%, reflects the depth where photosynthetic available radiation (PAR) is 1% of its surface value. The value of z1% is a measure of water clarity, which is an important parameter regarding ecosystems. Based on the Case‐1 water assumption, z1% can be estimated empirically from the remotely derived concentration of chlorophyll‐a ([Chl]), commonly retrieved by employing band ratios of remote sensing reflectance (Rrs). Recently, a model based on water's inherent optical properties (IOPs) has been developed to describe the vertical attenuation of visible solar radiation. Since IOPs can be near‐analytically calculated …

A Novel Human B Cell Subpopulation Representing The Initial Germinal Center Population To Express Aid, Grant R. Kolar, Darshna Mehta, Rosana Pelayo, J. Donald Capra

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have identified a novel mature human B-cell subpopulation in the human tonsil that has characteristics of both naive B cells and germinal center B cells including the expression of activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID), which is essential for the process of immunoglobulin somatic hypermutation and class-switch recombination. These cells are clearly somatically hypermutated, albeit modestly. Their phenotype (IgD+CD38-CD23 -FSChiCD71+) is unique and suggests they may be intermediate between both naive and germinal center cells. Morphologically they are also distinct from other B-cell subpopulations. The evidence presented suggests these cells may be …

Hydatellaceae Identified As A New Branch Near The Base Of The Angiosperm Phylogenetic Tree, Jeffery M. Saarela, Hardeep S. Rai, James A. Doyle, Peter K. Endress, Sarah Mathews, Adam D. Marchant, Barbara G. Briggs, Sean W. Graham

Faculty Publications

Although the relationship of angiosperms to other seed plants remains controversial, great progress has been made in identifying the earliest extant splits in flowering-plant phylogeny, with the discovery that the New Caledonian shrub Amborella trichopoda, the water lilies (Nymphaeales), and the woody Austrobaileyales constitute a basal grade of lines that diverged before the main radiation in the clade. By focusing attention on these ancient lines, this finding has re-written our understanding of angiosperm structural and reproductive biology, physiology, ecology and taxonomy. The discovery of a new basal lineage would lead to further re-evaluation of the initial angiosperm radiation, but would …
