Development Of Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy For Studying Electron Transport In Lipid Monolayers And Gold Nanoparticle Films, Violeta Stoycheva
Development Of Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy For Studying Electron Transport In Lipid Monolayers And Gold Nanoparticle Films, Violeta Stoycheva
Masters Theses
The focus of this thesis is the scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) investigation of the electron transport in lipid monolayers and in films of gold nanoparticles. The quality and stability of lipid monolayers were characterized by various analytical techniques such as fluorescence microscopy and spectroscopy, contact angle, and electrochemistry using a monolayer modified electrode. In the SECM measurement, the monolayer electron transport was not detected. The microscopic monolayer quality turned out to be not suitable for studying the electron transport.
The conductivity of mono layer protected gold clusters (MPCs) with different core sizes (1-3 nm diameter) were investigated using SECM. These …
Banish Belly Bulge And Chisel Your Bis: A Semiotic Analysis Of Gender Representations In Fitness Magazine Advertising, Lauren A. Teal
Banish Belly Bulge And Chisel Your Bis: A Semiotic Analysis Of Gender Representations In Fitness Magazine Advertising, Lauren A. Teal
Masters Theses
This study examined gender ideologies in the advertising of two popular fitness magazines, Shape and Men's Fitness, using Kress and van Leeuwen's visual semiotic theory (1996). The aim of this study was to determine how fitness magazine advertising participates in the construction of gender identities, and to identify what rhetorical and visual strategies are commonly employed.
Through an examination of the way gender identities are constructed by fitness magazines my research has concluded that advertising within both magazines promotes idealized body types and stereotypical gender identities for men and women. In Shape's advertisements, women are wives and homemakers; they …

Comparison Of 2 Vegetation-Height Management Practices For Wildlife Control At Airports, Thomas W. Seamans, Scott C. Barras, Glen E. Bernhardt, Bradley F. Blackwell, Jonathon D. Cepek
Human–Wildlife Interactions
Vegetation-height management is a potential method to reduce bird numbers at airports. Based on studies in Europe, researchers recommended vegetation heights around 25 cm; however, preliminary studies in the United States produced conflicting results regarding the effect of tall (18 to >25 cm) vegetation on bird numbers at airports. From 1999 to 2002, we compared birds and other wildlife use of 4 short-vegetation plots (mean maximum height of 15.6 cm ± 5.1 SE and visual obstruction reading of 4.6 ± 3.0 cm) and 4 tall-vegetation plots (mean maximum height of 26.9 ± 8.4 cm and visual obstruction reading of 10.0 …

Can Lawyers Be War Criminals, Milan Markovic
Can Lawyers Be War Criminals, Milan Markovic
Faculty Scholarship
This Essay will use the Torture Memo to illustrate how lawyers might find themselves implicated in war crimes. I will explore the contention that the Torture Memo is not only flawed legal advice but potential evidence of criminal conduct.
In Part I, I will address the flawed and reckless reasoning employed in the Torture Memo. I argue that whether or not Yoo and Bybee wrote the memorandum in good faith, the enterprise in which they were involved—providing legal cover for the abuse of detainees—was morally hazardous. I argue that there are some ends toward which lawyers should not direct their …

Adaptive Power System Stabilizers Using Artificial Immune System, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Mani Hunjan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Power system stabilizers (PSSs) are used to damp intra-area and inter-area oscillations in a power network. They provide effective supplementary control by supplying auxiliary control signals to the excitation system of the generators. The proper tuning of PSSs has a significant influence on its effectiveness in providing the required damping under different operating conditions and disturbances. Various algorithms have been successfully implemented to simultaneously design multiple optimal PSSs in power systems. As the power network's operating conditions change, the performance of PSSs degrade. Optimal PSS parameters obtained using bacteria foraging algorithm (BFA) have shown to successfully damp out system oscillations …
The Interoceptive Pavlovian Stimulus Effects Of Caffeine, Jennifer E. Murray, Chia Li, Matthew I. Palmatier, Rick A. Bevins
The Interoceptive Pavlovian Stimulus Effects Of Caffeine, Jennifer E. Murray, Chia Li, Matthew I. Palmatier, Rick A. Bevins
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The present research sought to test whether caffeine functioned as a Pavlovian cue in two ways—as a positive drug feature or as a conditional stimulus (CS). As a positive feature (Experiment 1), brief light presentations were followed by sucrose only on sessions in which caffeine (10 mg/kg) was administered. On intermixed saline sessions, light presentations were not followed by sucrose. The light came to control robust goal-tracking (i.e., conditioned responding) only in caffeine sessions. Thus, caffeine disambiguates when the light was paired with sucrose. Decreasing the dose of caffeine decreased the conditioned responding evoked by the light (ED50=4.16 …

Do more jobs mean increased community wellbeing? Not necessarily if the jobs are low-paying and keep people poor.
The “working poor” have increased in many South Dakota counties. Several of those counties have also made the list of U.S. counties that have changed most drastically in working poverty percentages between 1990 and 2000 (Anderson 2006).

Mining Minimal Distinguishing Subsequence Patterns With Gap Constraints, Xiaonan Ji, James Bailey, Guozhu Dong
Kno.e.sis Publications
Discovering contrasts between collections of data is an important task in data mining. In this paper, we introduce a new type of contrast pattern, called a Minimal Distinguishing Subsequence (MDS). An MDS is a minimal subsequence that occurs frequently in one class of sequences and infrequently in sequences of another class. It is a natural way of representing strong and succinct contrast information between two sequential datasets and can be useful in applications such as protein comparison, document comparison and building sequential classification models. Mining MDS patterns is a challenging task and is significantly different from mining contrasts between relational/transactional …

In The Name Of The Father, The Daughter And Eddie Scrap: Trinitarian Theology In Million Dollar Baby, Sharon Roubach
Journal of Religion & Film
Million Dollar Baby (dir. Clint Eastwood, 2004) is a boxing movie that uses imagery associated with the Holy Trinity – personified by the film's three protagonists – to put forth a view that the essence of Christianity relates to belief and love. The Trinity also lends itself as a medium for Eastwood's reflections of notions of home and family, through a comparison between biological dysfunctional families and human bonds based on love and compassion.

Mitochondrial Dna Sequence Variation And Phylogenetic Relationships Among Michigan Brown Trout (Salmo Trutta) Strains, Shleby S. Johnson
Mitochondrial Dna Sequence Variation And Phylogenetic Relationships Among Michigan Brown Trout (Salmo Trutta) Strains, Shleby S. Johnson
Masters Theses
Despite the extensive use of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in studies of European brown trout (Salmo trutta) populations, little information is available regarding the genetic composition or phylogenetic relationships among strains of Michigan brown trout. The objective of this study was to quantify the amount of polymorphism among three strains of Michigan brown trout at the mtDNA level and to infer genetic relatedness among representative individuals of these strains. This was accomplished by sequencing the ND1 region of mtDNA and constructing phylogenetic trees based on detected sequence variation. A total of 23 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were found in …

Trees On K-12 School Campuses In Virginia, Jeffrey L. Kirwan, P. Eric Wiseman, John R. Seiler
Virginia Journal of Science
Trees and saplings growing on K-12 school campuses were investigated in 105 school districts across Virginia. There were 2812 trees (>12.5 cm stem diameter at 1.4 m above ground level) inventoried across all campuses. The mean and median campus tree population was 27 and 18, respectively. Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) was the most abundant species, accounting for 11% of all inventoried trees. Red maple (Acer rubrum L.) was the most frequently inventoried species, present on 44% of the campuses. Sapling (trees with 2.5-12.5 cm stem diameter at 1.4 m above ground level) populations were similar …

We propose research to fill key gaps in the areas of population and community ecology, based on a National Science Foundation workshop identifying funding priorities for the next 5–10 years. Our vision for the near future of ecology focuses on three core areas: predicting the strength and context-dependence of species interactions across multiple scales; identifying the importance of feedbacks from individual interactions to ecosystem dynamics; and linking pattern with process to understand species coexistence. We outline a combination of theory development and explicit, realistic tests of hypotheses needed to advance population and community ecology.

Plants engage in multiple, simultaneous interactions with other species; some (enemies) reduce and others (mutualists) enhance plant performance. Moreover, effects of different species may not be independent of one another; for example, enemies may compete, reducing their negative impact on a plant. The magnitudes of positive and negative effects, as well as the frequency of interactive effects and whether they tend to enhance or depress plant performance, have never been comprehensively assessed across the many published studies on plant–enemy and plant–mutualist interactions. We performed a meta-analysis of experiments in which two enemies, two mutualists, or an enemy and a mutualist …

Dartmouth Scholarship
To elucidate the molecular mechanisms controlling the expression of the hypha-specific adhesin gene HWP1 of Candida albicans, its promoter was dissected and analyzed using a green fluorescent protein reporter gene. A 368-bp region, the HWP1 control region (HCR), was critical for activation under hypha-inducing conditions and conferred developmental regulation to a heterologous ENO1 promoter. A more distal region of the promoter served to amplify the level of promoter activation. Using gel mobility shift assays, a 249-bp subregion of HCR, HCRa, was found to bind at least four proteins from crude extracts of yeasts and hyphae with differing binding patterns dependent …

Albert Bierstadt's Images Of The American West: An Eco-Critical Reflection On Nature Painting, Sabine Wilke
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
In the Pacific Northwest we encounter images of the American West as place of utmost grandeur, i.e., picturesque images of spectacular Western landscapes that have circulated throughout history in specific ways that I wish to explore. These images of the American West - adopted, among others, by environmental organizations and the tourist industry - were, to some extent at least, shaped artistically by German-American painter Albert Bierstadt who lived and worked in the latter half of the nineteenth century and who was one of the first artists after the first generation of expedition painters who traveled West repeatedly and transformed …

Review Of Restoring The Connection To The Natural World: Essays On The African American Environmental Imagination, Uwe Küchler
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
In her introduction to The Ecocriticism Reader from 1995, a landmark in the short and dynamic development of this new field of knowledge, Cheryl Glotfelty anticipated that "Ecocriticism has been predominantly a white movement. It will become a multi-ethnic movement when stronger connections are made between the environment and issues of social justice, and when a diversity of voices are encouraged to contribute to the discussion" (Glotfelty 1996, xxv). The collection of essays reviewed here, published in 2003, fills this gap in ecocritical research. The nine contributors to Sylvia Mayer's edition have critically evaluated various aspects of African …
