Shakespearean Spin-Offs: Mindless Entertainment Or Conversations With Critics, Amy Anderson Apr 2007

Shakespearean Spin-Offs: Mindless Entertainment Or Conversations With Critics, Amy Anderson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Literature is always in a state of evolution. Words change; the way writers write changes. Even actual literary works transform. William Shakespeare manipulated numerous classic works of literature to make extraordinary dramas for both his lifetime and eras since. Much as Shakespeare adapted literature to suit his purposes, writers today are constantly utilizing story lines introduced by the bard over four-hundred years ago in various modern-day mediums. Shakespeare wrote most of his works for the entertainment of the masses; Shakespeare's works are adapted today for both entertainment and academic endeavors. Certainly, a Klingon (Star Trek) version of arguably …

Therapeutic Alliance And Treatment Progress In Couple Psychotherapy, Lynne M. Knobloch-Fedders, William M. Pinsof, Barton J. Mann Apr 2007

Therapeutic Alliance And Treatment Progress In Couple Psychotherapy, Lynne M. Knobloch-Fedders, William M. Pinsof, Barton J. Mann

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

This study examined the ability of the therapeutic alliance to predict treatment progress on individual‐ and relationship‐level variables from the early to middle phase of couple treatment. Although alliance did not predict progress in individual functioning, it accounted for 5–22% of the variance in improvement in marital distress. Women’s mid‐treatment alliance uniquely predicted improvement in marital distress, over and above early treatment alliance. When men’s alliances with the therapist were stronger than their partners’ at session 8, couples showed more improvement in marital distress. Treatment response was also positively associated with women’s ratings of their partners’ alliance. Results confirm that …

Designing A Decision Support System For Marine Reserves Management: An Economic Analysis For The Dutch North Sea, Arjan Ruijs, Hongyu Ding, Ekko C. Van Ierland Apr 2007

Designing A Decision Support System For Marine Reserves Management: An Economic Analysis For The Dutch North Sea, Arjan Ruijs, Hongyu Ding, Ekko C. Van Ierland

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In this paper we discuss how a Decision Support System (DSS) for managing the marine environment can be set up. We use the Driving force-Pressure-State-Impact-Respond (DPSIR) framework to analyze which are the major driving forces impacting upon the marine environment in the North Sea. Moreover, a number of potential responses are identified. Furthermore, a preliminary and simplified optimization model has been set up and can be used in a DSS to decide on the best location of marine reserves for the protection of species. The model is based on a bio-economic metapopulation model that can be used to decide which …

Identification Of A Pool Of Non-Pumping Na/K-Atpase, Man Liang, Jiang Tian, Lijun Liu, Sandrine Pierre Phd, Jiang Liu, Joseph I. Shapiro M.D., Zi-Jian Xie Apr 2007

Identification Of A Pool Of Non-Pumping Na/K-Atpase, Man Liang, Jiang Tian, Lijun Liu, Sandrine Pierre Phd, Jiang Liu, Joseph I. Shapiro M.D., Zi-Jian Xie

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Recent studies have ascribed many non-pumping functions to the Na/K-ATPase. Here, we present experimental evidence demonstrating that over half of the plasma membrane Na/KATPase in LLC-PK1 cells is performing cellular functions other than ion pumping. This “non-pumping” pool of Na/K-ATPase, like the pumping pump, binds ouabain. Depletion of either cholesterol or caveolin-1 moves some of the “non-pumping” Na/KATPase into the pumping pool. Graded knock-down of the 1 subunit of the Na/K-ATPase eventually results in loss of this “non-pumping” pool while preserving the pumping pool. Our prior studies indicate that a loss of the non-pumping pool is associated with a loss …

A Latent Growth Curve Analysis Of Prosocial Behavior Among Rural Adolescents, Gustavo Carlo, Lisa J. Crockett, Brandy A. Randall, Scott C. Roesch

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The present study was designed to investigate stability and changes in pro-social behavior and the parent and peer correlates of prosocial behavior in rural adolescents. Participants were from a rural, low SES community in the Eastern United States. The participants were in 7th, 8th, and 9th grades at Time 1 and 10th, 11th, and 12th grades at Time 4, and completed measures of prosocial behavior and quality of parent and peer relationships. Latent growth curve modeling revealed that despite moderate stability in individual differences in prosocial behavior and slight increases in quality of peer and parent relationships, level of prosocial …

Selected Chemistry Of Biologically-Active Thiols : N-Acetylpenicillamine And 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole In Nitrosothiol Formation And Role In Allergic Contact Dermatitis Respectively, Itai Chipinda

Dissertations and Theses

Two biologically-active thiols, N-acetylpenicillamine (NAP) and 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), were studied in this thesis. NAP is known to combine with nitric oxide (NO) to produce S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP) and MBT is a known allergen.

The formation, reaction dynamics, and detailed kinetics and mechanism of the reaction between nitrous acid (HNO2), prepared in situ, and NAP to produce SNAP were studied. The reaction is first order in nitrite, NAP and acid in pH conditions at or slightly higher than the pKa of HNO2. Both HPLC and quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry techniques confirmed the formation of SNAP and the absence of any other products. …

Investigation Of The Summer Kara Sea Circulation Employing A Variational Data Assimilation Technique, G. Panteleev, A. Proshutinsky, M. Kulakov, Dmitri A. Nechaev, W. Maslowski

Faculty Publications

[ 1] The summer circulations and hydrographic fields of the Kara Sea are reconstructed for mean, positive and negative Arctic Oscillation regimes employing a variational data assimilation technique which provides the best fit of reconstructed fields to climatological data and satisfies dynamical and kinematic constraints of a quasi-stationary primitive equation ocean circulation model. The reconstructed circulations agree well with the measurements and are characterized by inflow of 0.63, 0.8, 0.51 Sv through Kara Gate and 1.18, 1.1, 1.12 Sv between Novaya Zemlya and Franz Josef Land, for mean climatologic conditions, positive and negative AO indexes, respectively. The major regions of …

The Effects Of Invasive Cogongrass (Imperata Cylindrica) On The Threatened Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus Polyphemus), Katherine A. Basiotis Apr 2007

The Effects Of Invasive Cogongrass (Imperata Cylindrica) On The Threatened Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus Polyphemus), Katherine A. Basiotis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) is critical to upland communities and considered a keystone species. A recent threat to gopher tortoise habitat is the invasive cogongrass (Imperata cylindrica), which spreads rapidly, eliminating native vegetation. This study consisted of three experiments to investigate the effects of the cogongrass on a population of gopher tortoises. A feeding experiment revealed that individuals readily ate native vegetation, but would not eat cogongrass. A tracking experiment showed that there was a significantly different mean angle of movement between individuals whose home ranges were outside cogongrass compared to those that overlapped cogongrass, …

Glyconanobiotics: Novel Carbohydrated Nanoparticle Polymers, Thotaha Wijayahewage Sampath Chrysantha Abeylath Apr 2007

Glyconanobiotics: Novel Carbohydrated Nanoparticle Polymers, Thotaha Wijayahewage Sampath Chrysantha Abeylath

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Carbohydrates on the cell surface conjugates to proteins and lipids and participates in biological processes as glycoconjugates. Carbohydrate functionalized nanoparticles (glyconanoparticles) constitute a good bio-mimetic model of carbohydrate presentation at the cell surface and are currently centered on many glycobiological and biomedical applications. The most of the applications have been reported using gold glyconanoparticles. A brief review of gold glyconanoparticles and some of their applications will be discussed in Chapter I. Although metallic, semiconductor and magnetic glyconanoparticles have been reported, no polyacrylate glyconanoparticles have yet to be described.

Chapter II describes the first preparation of carbohydrate functionalized polymer nanoparticles by …

An innovator discovers a new idea and uses this private knowledge to earn extraordinary profits. Competitors eventually figure out what the innovator knows and the idea becomes public information. As the idea becomes public, the innovator’s profits fall to the ordinary level. The public uses the idea to increase productivity and wealth. Because economic innovation begins with private information, it is unpredictable before it occurs, and because it ends with public information, it is understandable afterwards. In this respect, innovation resembles biological mutation. These facts have consequences for law and policy to foster economic growth. To avoid corruption, state officials …
