The Gap Between Theory And Practice In Digital Forensics, Joseph C. Sremack Apr 2007

The Gap Between Theory And Practice In Digital Forensics, Joseph C. Sremack

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Digital forensics is a young field that is being defined by the reactive nature of its development – in terms of both research and practice. As technology develops, digital forensics is forced to react and adapt. The rapid development of technology and the lack of an established theoretical foundation has led to a disconnect between the theory and practice of digital forensics. While the base theoretical issues are being worked on by researchers, practitioners are dealing with entirely new sets of issues. The complexity of investigations is increasing, and anti-forensics techniques are advancing as well. The disconnect will be resolved …

Fish Predation Alters Community Predictability In Small Ponds, Elizabeth Gabor Biro Apr 2007

Fish Predation Alters Community Predictability In Small Ponds, Elizabeth Gabor Biro

Theses

Predation can have large but variable impacts on prey species diversity. Although the effects of predation are often deterministic, stochastic processes can often influence the outcome on community assembly regardless of predator presence. Top predators can alter several properties of the community, including the abundance and richness of species, as well as the traits of species that can persist with predators. These properties, in turn, may influence the pattern of community assembly and the predictability of community structure from site to site. In this study, we investigated whether the presence of fish predators influenced the site-to-site predictability (similarity in community …

Differential Effects Of Hunting On Pre-Dispersal Seed Predation And Primary And Secondary Seed Removal Of Two Neotropical Tree Species, Noelle G. Beckman, Helene C. Muller-Landau Apr 2007

Differential Effects Of Hunting On Pre-Dispersal Seed Predation And Primary And Secondary Seed Removal Of Two Neotropical Tree Species, Noelle G. Beckman, Helene C. Muller-Landau

Biology Faculty Publications

Many of the mammals undergoing drastic declines in tropical forests worldwide are important seed dispersers and seed predators, and thus changes in mammal communities due to hunting will affect plant recruitment. It has been hypothesized that larger-seeded species will suffer greater reductions in seed removal and thus greater increases in predispersal seed predation than smaller-seeded species. We compared primary and secondary seed removal and predispersal seed predation of two tree species between hunted and nonhunted sites in Central Panama. Seeds of Oenocarpus mapora (Arecaceae) are 16-times greater in size than those of Cordia bicolor (Boraginaceae). We quantified primary seed removal …

Upper-Ocean Response To Hurricane Ivan In A 1/25 Degrees Nested Gulf Of Mexico Hycom, T. G. Prasad, Patrick J. Hogan

Faculty Publications

[ 1] A 20-layer, 1/25 degrees nested Gulf of Mexico (GoM) Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) has been employed to examine the evolving three-dimensional ocean response to Hurricane Ivan during 14 - 16 September 2004. Results from several combinations of numerical experiments with and without assimilation of satellite-altimetry sea-surface height (SSH) are being analyzed and compared for the September 2004 hurricane period. A comparison of simulated zonal and meridional velocities using data assimilation shows improved agreement with profiler observations. The amplitude of the cold wake ( similar to 6 degrees C) produced by these simulations compared reasonably well with the …

Selenophosphate Synthetase 2 Is Essential For Selenoprotein Biosynthesis, Xue-Ming Xu, Bradley A. Carlson, Robert Irons, Heiko Mix, Nianxin Zhong, Vadim Gladyshev, Dolph L. Hatfield

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

Selenophosphate synthetase (SelD) generates the selenium donor for selenocysteine biosynthesis in eubacteria. One homologue of SelD in eukaryotes is SPS1 (selenophosphate synthetase 1) and a second one, SPS2, was identified as a selenoprotein in mammals. Earlier in vitro studies showed SPS2, but not SPS1, synthesized selenophosphate from selenide, whereas SPS1 may utilize a different substrate. The roles of these enzymes in selenoprotein synthesis in vivo remain unknown. To address their function in vivo, we knocked down SPS2 in NIH3T3 cells using small interfering RNA and found that selenoprotein biosynthesis was severely impaired, whereas knockdown of SPS1 had no effect. …
