Investigation Of Safe-Level Testing For Beta-Lactam, Sulfonamide, And Tetracycline Residues In Commingled Bovine Milk, Richelle R. Goulette

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

In the United States more than “a billion pounds of butter, 7 billion pounds of cheese, 1.5 billion pounds of yogurt, and one billion gallons of ice cream” (USDA, 2005) are produced annually. According to the USDA Food Pyramid, it is recommended that every person consume between two and three cups of milk products every day (USDA, 2005). With so much product being consumed by the greater public there is cause for concern on the quality of the product being ingested. The purpose of this research is to explore the quality of milk product, particularly safe-level residue testing for antibiotics …

Electrochemical Detection Of Prostate Carcinoma Biomarkers Using Nanotechnology, Kathryn Leonard May 2007

Electrochemical Detection Of Prostate Carcinoma Biomarkers Using Nanotechnology, Kathryn Leonard

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

The first chapter of this thesis speaks about prostate specific antigen, carbon nanotubes and horseradish peroxidase. The second chapter discusses the electrochemistry and catalysis of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and myoglobin (Mb) covalently attached to vertically aligned carbon nanotube arrays used as a tranducer. Cyclic voltammetry results gave quasi-reversible FeIII/FeII voltammetry and electrochemical catalysis involving catalytic reduction of hydrogen peroxide for both the iron-heme enzymes in myoglobin and horseradish peroxidase coupled to the carboxylated ends of the carbon nanotube arrays by amine bioconjugation reactions. Reduction peak currents gave linear relationships with scan-rates, typical of thin layer voltammetry. Results suggest that the …

Modeling Architectural Strategy Using Design Structure Networks, C. Jason Woodard May 2007

Modeling Architectural Strategy Using Design Structure Networks, C. Jason Woodard

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

System architects face the formidable task of purposefully shaping an evolving space of complex designs. Their task s further complicated when they lack full control of the design process, and therefore must anticipate the behavior of other stakeholders, including the designers of component products and competing systems. This paper presents a conceptual tool called a design structure network (DSN) to help architects and design scientists reason effectively about these situations. A DSN is a graphical representation of a system’s design space. DSNs improve on existing representation schemes by providing a compact and intuitive way to express design options—the ability to …

ABSTRACT PASTORAL LEADERSHIP PROBLEMS IN SMALL, ESTABLISHED CHURCHES OF UNDER 100 PEOPLE Rev. Brian K. Miller Liberty Theological Seminary, 2007 Mentor: Dr. Homer Massey A review of current literature demonstrates that very little material is available regarding small churches and the leadership problems that the pastor will face. The purpose of this project is to shed light on some of these problems, and provide insight and helpful advice to those pastors serving in small churches. Based on the literature available, this project reviews the most common leadership problems faced by small church pastors, and gives advice and suggestions for dealing …

Atamasco Lily, Zephyranthes Atamasca, W. John Hayden May 2007

Atamasco Lily, Zephyranthes Atamasca, W. John Hayden

Biology Faculty Publications

Simple and pure, Atamasco lilies were among the first of many beautiful wildflowers to be noticed by the Jamestown colonists as they explored the tidewater region of southeastern Virginia. A perennial herb that grows from a subterranean bulb, the leaves are glossy green, linear, flat to somewhat concave, up to one half inch wide and approximately one foot in length. The species name, atamasca, is attributed to Tapehanek words meaning under grass, in reference to the location of the bulb under grass-like leaves. Overall the plant is rather grass-like. Flowers are erect to slightly inclined. As in many lilies, …

Improving Natural History Research With Image Analysis: The Relationship Between Skin Color, Sex, Size And Stage In Adult Red-Spotted Newts, Andrew K. Davis, Kristine L. Grayson May 2007

Improving Natural History Research With Image Analysis: The Relationship Between Skin Color, Sex, Size And Stage In Adult Red-Spotted Newts, Andrew K. Davis, Kristine L. Grayson

Biology Faculty Publications

Natural history researchers are increasingly using digital cameras and computer software to measure their study animals. Adult Red-spotted Newts (Notophthalmus viridescens viridescens) are known to display a range of skin colors, from brown to green, but it has not been possible to quantify this variation until the advent of image analysis technology. We used an image analysis approach to compare skin color between sexes, across a range of sizes, and between aquatic and post-breeding (emigrating to the terrestrial habitat) stage adult newts. From 232 individuals (53% male, 47% female) we documented a wide but subtle range of skin …

Population Size And Passage Efficiency Of Alabama Shad Reaching Jim Woodruff Lock And Dam, Patrick Ely May 2007

Population Size And Passage Efficiency Of Alabama Shad Reaching Jim Woodruff Lock And Dam, Patrick Ely

All Theses

In this study, I estimated the population size of migrating Alabama shad below Jim Woodruff Lock and Dam (JWLD) in the Apalachicola River located in the central panhandle of Northwest Florida using mark recapture and relative abundance techniques. The number of marked fish was adjusted for tag loss, emigration and mortality. The population size of migrating Alabama shad near JWLD was estimated at 26,029 (95% C.I. = 15,174 - 49,040) in 2005 and as 972 (95% C.I. = 270 - 9,720) in 2006. Due to the small sample size, a relative abundance method was used to independently estimate a population …

The Proliferative Response Of Equine Chondrocytes To Bovine Lymph Node Proteins In Vitro , Alison Reed May 2007

The Proliferative Response Of Equine Chondrocytes To Bovine Lymph Node Proteins In Vitro , Alison Reed

All Theses

Osteoarthritis is a leading cause of chronic lameness in horses. Many treatment options for osteoarthritis have limited effectiveness and are expensive. Treatments that stimulate cartilage development may promote cartilage healing. Bovine supramammary lymph nodes are available at no cost and contain bioactive growth factors that could promote cartilage healing. The purpose of this study was to measure the proliferative response of equine chondrocytes to bovine lymph node proteins. Chondrocytes were harvested from adult horses. Lymph node extract (LNE) was prepared by mixing freeze-dried lymph node powder with PBS. Experiments compared BGS and LNE on equal and unequal protein bases. Additional …

Anomaly Detection For Http Intrusion Detection : Algorithm Comparisons And The Effect Of Generalization On Accuracy, Kenneth Ingham Iii May 2007

Anomaly Detection For Http Intrusion Detection : Algorithm Comparisons And The Effect Of Generalization On Accuracy, Kenneth Ingham Iii

Computer Science ETDs

Network servers are vulnerable to attack, and this state of affairs shows no sign of abating. Therefore security measures to protect vulnerable software is an important part of keeping systems secure. Anomaly detection systems have the potential to improve the state of affairs, because they can independently learn a model of normal behavior from a set of training data, and then use the model to detect novel attacks. In most cases, this model represents more instances than were in the training data set—such generalization is necessary for accurate anomaly detection. This dissertation describes a framework for testing anomaly detection algorithms …

Spatial Analysis Of Topography For Glacier Mapping In The Western Himalaya, Lubica Cverckova May 2007

Spatial Analysis Of Topography For Glacier Mapping In The Western Himalaya, Lubica Cverckova

Student Work

Understanding climate change requires accurate assessment of the Earths cryosphere, as glacier fluctuations directly and indirectly reflect changes in radiative forcing and temperature and precipitation patterns. Direct assessment of alpine glaciers in high-mountains is notoriously difficult, and assessment from space represents the only practical alternative for assessing regional and global ice-fluctuation patterns. The mapping of debris-covered glaciers is especially problematic, as glacier surfaces exhibit spectral reflectance patterns similar to surrounding rock and sediment. Therefore, multispectral analysis of satellite imagery does not permit accurate delineation. Consequently, the use of satellite-derived topographic information and spatial analysis were evaluated for mapping the Raikot …

Effects Of Habitat On Avian Antipredator Behavior, May 2007, Jodi Anderson May 2007

Effects Of Habitat On Avian Antipredator Behavior, May 2007, Jodi Anderson

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

A variety of anti-predator behaviors have evolved in birds because of the far-reaching effects of predation risk. The use of anti-predator behavior is a trade off, as it can dissuade a predator, but it also depletes time and energy from foraging and other activities. Forests provide better protection from predators than do open field habitats. Birds were tested in both forest and open habitat to determine if habitat type had an effect on frequency or aggressiveness of anti-predator behavior. Calls of two different predators were played at different sites in each habitat type, where reactions of birds were observed and …

Effect Of Colony Size On Age Structure And Behavior Of Metabus Gravidus (Araneidae) In The Monteverde Cloud Forest, May 2007, Laura Peterson

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Metabus gravidus are semi-social orb-weaving spiders living in colonies of up to 70 individuals over slow moving water. Buskirk (1975a) found that the time budget of spider behaviors differs within colonies of various sizes. I recorded the frequency and time spent on orb maintenance, aggressive behavior, spider displacement, and prey capture for spiders of varying sizes. Spider and web sizes were measured and then I observed 21 spiders of each size for an hour to record the time and frequency of the four behaviors. In the twenty-four colonies studied, small spiders were more abundant. Small colonies had a greater number …

Articles

The cytosolic acyl-CoA thioesterase I (Acot1) is an enzyme that hydrolyzes longchain acyl-CoAs of C12-C20-CoA in chain-length, to the free fatty acid and coenzyme A. Acot1 was previously shown to be strongly upregulated at mRNA and protein level in rodents by fibrates. In this study, we show that Acot1 mRNA levels were increased 90-fold in liver by treatment with Wy-14,643 and that Acot1 mRNA is also increased 15-fold in the liver of hepatocyte nuclear factor 4 alpha (HNF4a) knockout animals. Our study identified a direct repeat 1 (DR1) located in the Acot1 gene promotor in mouse, which binds the peroxisome …

An Emotional Mimicking Humanoid Biped Robot And Its Quantum Control Based On The Constraint Satisfaction Model, Quay Williams, Scott Bogner, Michael Kelley, Carolina Castillo, Martin Lukac, Dong Hwa Kim, Jeff S. Allen, Mathias I. Sunardi, Sazzad Hossain, Marek Perkowski

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The paper presents a humanoid robot that responds to human gestures seen by a camera. The behavior of the robot can be completely deterministic as specified by a Finite State Machine that maps the sensor signals to the effector signals. This model is further extended to the constraints-satisfaction based model that links robots vision, motion, emotional behavior and planning. One way of implementing this model is to use adiabatic quantum computer which quadratically speeds-up every constraint problem and will be thus necessary to solve large problems of this type. We propose to use the remotely-connected Orion system by DWAVE Corporation.

Chemical Signaling And Resource Use By African Elephants (Loxodonta Africana), Erek Stephen Napora May 2007

Chemical Signaling And Resource Use By African Elephants (Loxodonta Africana), Erek Stephen Napora

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In polygynous, sexually dimorphic species like the African elephant, Loxodonta africana, resource distribution influences female dispersion, while the location of females shapes male dispersion. Human constriction of viable habitat has affected elephant movements and impact. Elephants travel in matriarchal family groups, as single males or bachelor groups often looking for receptive females, and in mixed associations. Waterholes serve to meet the physical needs of elephants and as areas for information exchange, especially for males in search of females. When widely spaced, waterholes may be impacted heavily by elephants. I examined elephant use of a permanent waterhole to determine 1) the …

Anti-Insect Defensive Behaviors Of Equines After West Nile Virus Infection, Linsey Renee Cozzie May 2007

Anti-Insect Defensive Behaviors Of Equines After West Nile Virus Infection, Linsey Renee Cozzie

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

West Nile Virus is an important arbovirus (virus transmitted by arthropods) that has recently affected the health of both humans and animals in the United States. West Nile fever was first identified in the US in 1999. West Nile virus (WNV), vectored by mosquitoes, has had a detrimental impact on domestic horse health with over 23,000 equine cases in the United States since 1999. Previous research has focused on how this disease progresses and affects equids days to weeks post infection. The purpose of this study was to evaluate permanent equine behavioral changes. Specifically, I examined if surviving this disease …

Effects Of Temperature And Illumination On Background Matching In Mediterranean Geckos (Hemidactylus Turcicus), Frederic Zaidan, Pamela L. Wiebusch May 2007

Effects Of Temperature And Illumination On Background Matching In Mediterranean Geckos (Hemidactylus Turcicus), Frederic Zaidan, Pamela L. Wiebusch

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

The ability to change skin color is a relatively common phenomenon in lizards whose occurrence is often related to crypsis. Field observations suggest that Mediterranean geckos (an often ubiquitous introduced species in many metropolitan areas of the southern United States) have the ability to lighten and darken in response to their background. On light backgrounds, the geckos were typically light pink whereas on dark backgrounds they were typically much darker with a brownish hue to their skin. This study investigated the ability to background match in this species, the main effects of temperature (20, 25, and 30[degrees]C), illumination (total darkness …

Developing A Habitat Suitability Model For The Spotted Turtle Using A Hybrid-Deductive Approach, Bryan Correa-Berger May 2007

Developing A Habitat Suitability Model For The Spotted Turtle Using A Hybrid-Deductive Approach, Bryan Correa-Berger

Theses

Knowledge of species with multiple habitat needs for conservation and species survival planning is scarce. In order to predict areas of habitat suitability and potential further research, suitability modeling is necessary. This research created a GIS-based model to predict habitat suitability potential for the spotted turtle (Clemmys guttata) in four counties of western New York. Because of scarce and conflicting information on spotted turtle habitat needs, a survey was sent out to experts that evaluated spotted turtle habitat parameters. The goal of the habitat model was to predict optimal habitat for sustainable spotted turtle populations in an area where viable …
