Biology Faculty Publications

The genus Eupsophus is characterized by endotrophic larvae that inhabit water-filled cavities. The larvae feed from large yolk reserves during metamorphosis. The external morphology has been described for four of the ten known species and data on larval chondrocranial morphology are available only for one. We describe the extema1 morphology, oral disc and chondrocranial anatomy of the larvae of Eupsophus queulensis. The characteristics of E. queulensis tadpoles are compared with those of other Eupsophus larvae.

A Review Of The Methodological Features Of Systematic Reviews In Maternal Medicine, Lumaan Sheikh, Shelley Johnston, Shakila Thangaratinam, Mark D. Kilby, Khalid S. Khan

Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Background: In maternal medicine, research evidence is scattered making it difficult to access information for clinical decision making. Systematic reviews of good methodological quality are essential to provide valid inferences and to produce usable evidence summaries to guide management. This review assesses the methodological features of existing systematic reviews in maternal medicine, comparing Cochrane and non-Cochrane reviews in maternal medicine.

Methods: Medline, Embase, Database of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE) and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) were searched for relevant reviews published between 2001 and 2006. We selected those reviews in which a minimum of two databases were searched and …

Laboratories Of Democracy And State Brownfield Programs., Jaclyn Susan Marie Opp May 2007

Laboratories Of Democracy And State Brownfield Programs., Jaclyn Susan Marie Opp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Public investment and interest into brownfields has increased markedly in the past two decades. However, scholarship has not kept pace with this growth. Every state in the U.S. has created a brownfields program to deal with the presence of these properties in their state. However, the mechanisms offered in these state programs to facilitate brownfield remediation and redevelopment has gone untested and underresearched. This dissertation gathered data on all fifty state brownfield programs and the related Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) enforcement and inspection data. The fifty state data was then supplemented with three state case studies using in-depth …

Effects Of Evaluative Feedback On Math Self-Efficacy, Grade Self-Efficacy, And Math Achievement Of Ninth Grade Algebra Students : A Longitudinal Approach., Deborah June Burnett Thompson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The double-blind study used two intact ninth grade high school Algebra One classes for a total sample size of 46. Within each of the classes the participants were assigned randomly to one of three treatment groups: self-referenced feedback, social-referenced feedback, and a control group. Self-referenced feedback compared the student's performance to his or her previous performances. Social-referenced feedback compared the student's performance to that of the other students in the class. The control group did not receive comparative feedback but innocuous comments such as "study your notes before class." Six measurements of math self-efficacy, grade self-efficacy, and math achievement were …

Interpersonal Conflict Resolution: Differences Across Sex And Socially Established Gender, Abby Ramon

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The purpose of this study was to examine, compare, and contrast how men and women handle conflict in romantic interpersonal relationships. The purpose was also to examine the relationship between people’s particular ways of responding and their levels of masculinity and femininity, as measured by a modified version of the Bem Sex Role Inventory. Eighty-two participants between the ages of 18 and 55 were recruited for this study. They were all asked to fill out a personality inventory and two questionnaires, both of which consisted of a hypothetical conflict scenario and questions for the participant to answer. The data were …

Clouded Leopard Phylogeny Revisited: Support For Species Recognition And Population Division Between Borneo And Sumatra, Andreas Wilting, Valerie A. Buckley-Beason, Heike Feldhaar, Jurgen Gadau, Stephen J. O'Brien, K. Eduard Linsenmair May 2007

Clouded Leopard Phylogeny Revisited: Support For Species Recognition And Population Division Between Borneo And Sumatra, Andreas Wilting, Valerie A. Buckley-Beason, Heike Feldhaar, Jurgen Gadau, Stephen J. O'Brien, K. Eduard Linsenmair

Biology Faculty Articles

Background

The clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa) is one of the least known cat species and depletion of their forested habitats puts it under heavy pressure. Recently reclassification of Bornean clouded leopards (N. nebulosa diardi) to species level (N.diardi) was suggested based on molecular and morphological evidence. Since the genetic results were based solely on three Bornean samples we re-evaluated this partition using additional samples of Bornean clouded leopards (N = 7) and we were also able to include specimens from Sumatra (N = 3), which were lacking in previous analysis.

Results

We found strong …

Biochemical Characteristics Of Inconsistent Free T₄ Assays, Kristofer S. Fritz May 2007

Biochemical Characteristics Of Inconsistent Free T₄ Assays, Kristofer S. Fritz

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Serum levels of free thyroxine (T4) are helpful in the clinical evaluation of patients who are suspected of having thyroid disease, since free T4 (unbound) is known to closely relate to hyper, eu and hypothyroidism. There are documented inconsistencies among commercially available direct free thyroxine immunoassays. The biochemical basis for these inconsistencies is not understood and has not been characterized. Direct free T4 measurements have been linked to both T4-binding serum protein concentrations and protein-bound T4 concentrations. A free T4 reference method using direct equilibrium dialysis radioimmunoassay has been well characterized. New …

The Effect Of Radiation And Repeated Sub-Culturing On Tgf-Β1 Signaling In Frtl-5 Cells, Cheryl G. Burrell May 2007

The Effect Of Radiation And Repeated Sub-Culturing On Tgf-Β1 Signaling In Frtl-5 Cells, Cheryl G. Burrell

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

From our ongoing in vitro studies using the Fisher Rat Thyroid cell line-5 (FRTL-5) we recorded accelerated growth, reduced follicularization and reduction in thyroxin release that occurred as the cells were repeatedly sub-cultured. We also recorded that these changes occurred earlier and more rapidly following radiation exposure. We determined that TGF-β1 production increased under both conditions. We hypothesized that alteration in the TGF-β1 signaling pathway contributed to the changes observed in the cellular properties of FRTL-5 cells. Our objective was to examine some of the players in the TGF-β1 signaling pathway to determine whether radiation and/or repeated subculturing promoted changes …

Radiation-Induced Increases In Pkc Modulate Integrin Expression And Contribute To Fibrotic Changes, Pinal Rushikesh Pandya May 2007

Radiation-Induced Increases In Pkc Modulate Integrin Expression And Contribute To Fibrotic Changes, Pinal Rushikesh Pandya

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The sequences of events in fibrosis are similar to those in wound healing; however, the normal termination and resolution stages do not take place. The initial cellular response following ionizing radiation involves accumulation of the ECM (extracellular matrix) including collagen, fibronectin and the interaction of many growth factors (cytokines) with their receptors. There are a number of unanswered questions regarding many aspects of radiation-induced fibrosis, including the initial triggers and physical changes that initiate the process. We have confirmed that elevated pKC and other cellular changes following radiation are similar to those found at sites of inflammation. This information leads …

Detoxification Of Lipopolysaccharide By Endodontic Sealers, Dominic Côté May 2007

Detoxification Of Lipopolysaccharide By Endodontic Sealers, Dominic Côté

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of pulpal and periapical diseases. Several studies have evaluated the ability of various medicaments and irrigants used during root canal therapy to chemically detoxify LPS. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of some endodontic sealers to detoxify LPS. This investigation compared the quantities of TNF-α released by human monocytes exposed to LPS or LPS pre-treated with sealers. The sealers tested were: Pulp Canal Sealer EWT (PCS), AH Plus (AH), and Sealapex (SA). Ca(OH)2 and water (H2O) were respectively used as the positive and negative control materials. …

Maturational Changes In Cerebrovascular Thick- And Thin-Filament Regulation, Renan Joel Sandoval May 2007

Maturational Changes In Cerebrovascular Thick- And Thin-Filament Regulation, Renan Joel Sandoval

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The present study focused on the main hypothesis that age-related changes in myofilament Ca2+ sensitivity involve simultaneous changes in the relations between cytosolic Ca2+ transients, myosin phosphorylation, and force development. To define the effects of late fetal and early postnatal maturation, parallel experiments were carried out using cerebral arteries from both term lamb fetuses (140-141 days of gestation) and nonpregnant adult sheep. Fetal and adult cerebral arteries were stimulated by either mechanically, electromechanically, and/or pharmacomechanically-induced contractions, and the relations of cytosolic Ca2+, MLC phosphorylation, and contractile tensions were measured. These measurements allowed for stimulus and age-dependent …

Iron Dysregulation And Inflammation In Alzheimer’S Disease, Shino D. Magaki May 2007

Iron Dysregulation And Inflammation In Alzheimer’S Disease, Shino D. Magaki

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of senile dementia in the US and worldwide but the causes of its pathogenesis are currently unknown. In this study, we examined two processes that have been implicated in the early stages of AD and other forms of neurodegeneration, iron dysregulation and inflammation, both of which can promote the increased production of amyloid precursor protein (APP). We have measured different pools of brain iron in transgenic iron regulatory protein 2 knockout (IRP2-/-) mice in the early stages of neurodegeneration and in affected brain regions from AD patients at different stages of the …

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers

Inactivation of the APC gene is considered the initiating event in human colorectal cancer. Modifier genes that influence the penetrance of mutations in tumor-suppressor genes hold great potential for preventing the development of cancer. The mechanism by which modifier genes alter adenoma incidence can be readily studied in mice that inherit mutations in the Apc gene. We identified a new modifier locus of ApcMin-induced intestinal tumorigenesis called Modifier of Min 2 (Mom2). The polyp-resistant Mom2R phenotype resulted from a spontaneous mutation and linkage analysis localized Mom2 to distal chromosome 18. To obtain recombinant chromosomes for use in refining the Mom2 …

Distribution, Abundance, And Habitat Associations Of The Long-Billed Curlew In Southwestern North Dakota, Daniel S. Ackerman May 2007

Distribution, Abundance, And Habitat Associations Of The Long-Billed Curlew In Southwestern North Dakota, Daniel S. Ackerman

Theses and Dissertations

Gathering information on North American bird populations calls for long-term monitoring programs covering extensive geographic region to provide basic information on distribution, habitat use and availability, abundance, and changes in abundance. Information regarding population size, distributions and trends is of critical importance to conservation planners, managers, and biologists concerned with widespread degradation of ecosystems, alteration and loss of habitats, and understanding the effective conservation of a species. In accordance with the recommended monitoring of bird populations, especially species of high conservation concern, I undertook a study of the long-billed curlew (Numenius americanus parvus; hereafter LBCU or curlew). The LBCU were …

Indian Warfare, Household Competency, And The Settlement Of The Western Virginia Frontier, 1749 To 1794, John M. Boback May 2007

Indian Warfare, Household Competency, And The Settlement Of The Western Virginia Frontier, 1749 To 1794, John M. Boback

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The thesis of this dissertation is that Indian-related violence and warfare had a profound influence on the duration and nature of the frontier experience of those men and women who settled in the western Virginia backcountry between 1749 and 1794. Recurrent attacks by Shawnees, Delawares, Mingos, and Indians from the Great Lakes region caused such widespread death, destruction, and depopulation that it effectively prolonged the period of austere and difficult living conditions for over forty years. This conclusion contradicts the assertions of some recent scholars who have argued that crude living conditions lasted for only a year or two on …

Evaluating Windbreaks As A Conservation Strategy For Pollinator Communities In Altered And Fragmented Landscapes, May 2007, Anna Gouznova May 2007

Evaluating Windbreaks As A Conservation Strategy For Pollinator Communities In Altered And Fragmented Landscapes, May 2007, Anna Gouznova

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

In Costa Rica, sustaining human population growth has required fragmentation and conversion of its Tropical landscape to an agricultural one. Such large scale land use changes decrease local abundance of species and disrupt important ecological relationships, including species richness and productivity within pollinator communities (Kearns et al. 1997). Pollinators are essential in maintaining stability of plant communities and their dependent consumers. Moreover, in specialized pollinator-host plant mutualisms, the loss of either will reduce or eradicate population of the other. To counter effects of habitat fragmentation, agricultural communities incorporated windbreaks into crop fields and pastures as a restorative effort. I evaluate …

Habitat And Diversity Of Cloud Forest Invertebrates, May 2007, Matthew S. Mcclure

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

This study addresses the effects of abiotic conditions on canopy soil macro-invertebrate diversity by examining five Pacific and five Atlantic slope trees near the Biological Station in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Trees were sampled using single rope climbing technique, and macro-invertebrate were separated from soil samples in Berlese funnels the same day of collection. The meta-community, both slopes as one community showed that Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, and Hemiptera:Homoptera are the major taxa present. The two communities failed to show significant differences in their diversity (modified t-test = 1.03, p > 0.05), richness, and evenness from abiotic conditions. Biotic conditions must be the dominating …
