Formation Of Peptide Nanospheres And Nanofibrils By Metal Coordination, Mikhail V. Tsurkan, Michael Y. Ogawa

Two amphipathic polypeptides were coordinated to the cis positions of a square planar Pt(II) complex in order to provide the metal center with two noncovalent oligomerization domains. This resulted in the formation of new metal-peptide nanoassemblies which are shown to exist as nanometer-sized spheres and fibrils. Construction of these assemblies was based on the 30-residue polypeptide AQ-Pal14 which was designed for its ability to self-assemble into the common protein oligomerization motif of a noncovalent coiled-coil, and modified to contain a metal-binding 4-pyridylalanine residue at its surface. [Excerpt] “On November 29, 2005, in a Department of Defense press conference with Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Gen. Peter Pace, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Pace stated that white phosphorus “is a legitimate tool of the military,” and can be used for illumination, smoke, and incendiary purposes. Incredibly, the Department of Defense released an addendum to the press conference clarifying that white phosphorus was not used as an incendiary weapon. The development of micromachining technologies has provided wide applications in micro sensing and actuation. However, most of the demonstrated devices are selectively constructed by fabrication processes that are limited to complexity, configuration, dimension, and material variation. The monolithic fabrication has limitations and does not allow the inclusion of multiple components of incompatible processes. Therefore, the construction of 3D microstructures by heterogeneous microassembly is an alternate manufacturing route. In deterministic, monitored or controlled microassembly there has been considerable research in developing, analyzing and applying distributed algorithms for sensor and sensorless based assembly processes. African American (AA) grandmothers who parent their grandchildren may experience burden related to these responsibilities. Little is known about perceived caregiver burden and its influence on AA grandmother health and service needs. The purpose of this descriptive, correlational research study was to investigate relationships among personal characteristics, information need, perceived burden, perceived health, service need, and service use in AA grandmothers who are the primary caregivers for one or more of their biological grandchildren. Recruited through churches and community centers, 93 AA grandmothers, ages 36 to 78, participated in this study. These grandmothers were primary caregivers for 211 grandchildren. The …

Preharvest rainfall that occurs when fruit are fully ripe or approaching full ripeness can result in detrimental fruit splitting in rabbiteye and southern highbush blueberries. This study was initiated to develop a laboratory method to model rain-related incidence of splitting in cultivated blueberries with the goal of predicting the incidence of splitting in blueberry cultivars and selections. Multiyear field surveys of rabbiteye and southern highbush cultivars show that the incidence of rain-related splitting is strongly cultivar-dependent. Laboratory values for forced splitting and naturally occurring rain-related field splitting data show a strong correlation indicating that the incidence of fruit splitting can …

This project explored the development of serious play as a personal competency of creative leadership and as a dimension of a creative organizational climate. Skill development was undertaken through acquiring certification as a LEGO® Serious Play™ facilitator and three workshops were subsequently delivered to a range of clients. The principles of play and Papert’s theory of constructionism were used to develop a serious of creative products as prototypes tried out with clients in the form of team based games. Covariance models are a powerful description of non-coding RNA (ncRNA) families that can be used to search nucleotide databases for new members of these ncRNA families. Currently, estimation of the parameters of a covariance model (state transition and emission scores) is based only on the observed frequencies of mutations, insertions, and deletions in known ncRNA sequences. For families with very few known members, this can result in rather uninformative models where the consensus sequence has a good score and most deviations from consensus have a fairly uniform poor score. The 458 amino acid sequence of a mature JHE protein from the cricket Gryllus assimilis was identified after isolating the partial cDNA sequence encoding this protein from a fat body and midgut cDNA library. This hemimetabolan JHE sequence shows over 40% amino acid similarity to the known JHE sequences of several holometabolous insects. It also includes previously determined peptide sequences for G. assimilis JHE as well as two other motifs associated with JHE enzymes in holometabolous insects. The multi-scale biological system model is a new research direction to capture the dynamic measurements of complex biological systems. The current statistical thermodynamic models can not scale to this challenge due to the explosion of state-spaces of the system, where a biological organ may have billions of cells, each with millions of molecule types and each type may have a few million molecules. We seek to propose a phenomenological theory that will require a smaller number of state variables to address this multi-scaling problem. Metastasis is a common cause of cancer death. Tumor cells metastasized in the peritoneal organs are associated with formation of ascites in patients with advanced stages of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). Previous studies show cellular clusters in ascites of EOC patients are enriched with disseminated ovarian tumor cells that exhibit invasive capability in vitro, and that cell lines derived from these cells are tumorigenic. However, little is known about the tumorigenic and metastatic capabilities of these ovarian tumor cells.
