Growth And Survival Of The Pacific White Shrimp, Litopenaeus Vannamei, In Sea Salt And Other Ionic Environments, Bisesi Hopkin Joseph
Growth And Survival Of The Pacific White Shrimp, Litopenaeus Vannamei, In Sea Salt And Other Ionic Environments, Bisesi Hopkin Joseph
All Theses
he Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, is a euryhaline and eurythermal shrimp species. The robust nature of this species makes it a popular selection among shrimp aquaculturists. The high cost of coastal property as well as strict environmental regulations in developed countries has caused many shrimp farmers to move their operations further inland. Therefore, many inland farmers must bring in seawater, use brackish well water, or create their own environments using artificial sea salts. The purpose of this research was to determine if a sea salt mixture, ACS, composed of less expensive salts (NaCl, MgSO4, MgCl2, KCl, CaCl2 and NaHCO3), …
Analysis Of Nutraceuticals For Toxic Metals: Development And Validation Of Sample Preparation Method, Julia Cooper
Analysis Of Nutraceuticals For Toxic Metals: Development And Validation Of Sample Preparation Method, Julia Cooper
All Theses
With increasing numbers of health-conscious consumers purchasing nutraceutical supplements, total sales in the nutrition industry have soared to over $200 billion in 2006. It is important to assess the safety of these nutraceutical products, with specific regards to toxic metals, including arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury. Because species of these metals may be more toxic than others, they can have hazardous health effects if ingested in excess quantities. The work described in this thesis focuses on the development of a sample preparation method for nutraceutical products, specifically ethanolic tinctures and glycerin-based matrices, and analysis of these products by inductively coupled …
The Effects Of Group Initiatives In Collegiate Leisure Skills Courses, Ryan Hegreness
The Effects Of Group Initiatives In Collegiate Leisure Skills Courses, Ryan Hegreness
All Theses
Leisure skills classes are offered to students at Clemson University with the intent of helping students to develop new skills in various leisure-time activities. If a leisure skills class is successful, a student's sense of efficacy in that skill should be greater at the conclusion of the semester. This study attempted to determine whether leisure skills classes at Clemson University can become more effective in increasing self-efficacy through the addition of group initiatives as a part of the course curriculum. This study utilized a quasi-experimental design to examine whether there is a significant difference in general self-efficacy and leisure skills …
Nighttime Pedestrian Conspicuity: The Effects Of Pedestrian Movement, Orientation And The Configuration Of Retroreflective Material, Stacy Balk
All Theses
Most fatal collisions between vehicles and pedestrians occur at night; inadequate visibility is a key factor. Previous research has shown that positioning reflective markers on pedestrians in a manner that depicts biological motion greatly enhances conspicuity. This on-road experiment examined the conspicuity advantages of a full biological motion configuration relative to that provided by an ANSI class II safety vest. 120 healthy young participants were driven along a 3.5 mile route and pressed a button when they were confident they saw a pedestrian. A test pedestrian on the left shoulder of the roadway wore black clothing with either an ANSI …
Effects Of Ionizing Radiaton On Diaphyseal Cortical Bone, Neil Travis
Effects Of Ionizing Radiaton On Diaphyseal Cortical Bone, Neil Travis
All Theses
Radiation exposure is experienced in both radiotherapy and exploratory space missions. As cancer treatments improve and astronauts aim to explore beyond low earth, radiation's effects on bone must be clearly understood. Nine-week old female C57BL/6 mice were evaluated for cortical bone changes by mechanical testing, micro-computed tomography, quantitative histomorphometry, percent mineralization and micro-hardness indentation. Study one, Multi-Type study, mice received a 2 Gray (Gy) gamma, proton, iron and carbon whole body radiation dose and sacrificed 110 days post-exposure. Study two, High-Dose study, mice received a 7 Gy gamma radiation whole body dose and sacrificed 14 days post-exposure. Neither study revealed …
Transcription And Rna Interference In The Formation Of Heterochromatin, Shiv Grewal, Sarah C.R. Elgin
Transcription And Rna Interference In The Formation Of Heterochromatin, Shiv Grewal, Sarah C.R. Elgin
Biology Faculty Research
Transcription in heterochromatin seems to be an oxymoron--surely the 'silenced' form of chromatin should not be transcribed. But there have been frequent reports of low-level transcription in heterochromatic regions, and several hundred genes are found in these regions in Drosophila. Most strikingly, recent investigations implicate RNA interference mechanisms in targeting and maintaining heterochromatin, and these mechanisms are inherently dependent on transcription. Silencing of chromatin might involve trans-acting sources of the crucial small RNAs that carry out RNA interference, but in some cases, transcription of the region to be silenced seems to be required--an apparent contradiction.
Oxa1 Directly Interacts With Atp9 And Mediates Its Assembly Into The Mitochondrial F1FO-Atp Synthase Complex, Lixia Jia, Mary Kathryn Dienhart, Rosemary A. Stuart
Oxa1 Directly Interacts With Atp9 And Mediates Its Assembly Into The Mitochondrial F1FO-Atp Synthase Complex, Lixia Jia, Mary Kathryn Dienhart, Rosemary A. Stuart
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
The yeast Oxa1 protein is involved in the biogenesis of the mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) machinery. The involvement of Oxa1 in the assembly of the cytochrome oxidase (COX) complex, where it facilitates the cotranslational membrane insertion of mitochondrially encoded COX subunits, is well documented. In this study we have addressed the role of Oxa1, and its sequence-related protein Cox18/Oxa2, in the biogenesis of the F1Fo-ATP synthase complex. We demonstrate that Oxa1, but not Cox18/Oxa2, directly supports the assembly of the membrane embedded Fo-sector of the ATP synthase. Oxa1 was found to physically interact with …

Ras Transformation Of Rie-1 Cells Activates Cap-Independent Translation Of Ornithine Decarboxylase: Regulation By The Raf/Mek/Erk And Phosphatidylinositol 3-Kinase Pathways, Sofia Origanti, Lisa M. Shantz
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) is the first and generally rate-limiting enzyme in polyamine biosynthesis. Deregulation of ODC is critical for oncogenic growth, and ODC is a target of Ras. These experiments examine translational regulation of ODC in RIE-1 cells, comparing untransformed cells with those transformed by an activated Ras12V mutant. Analysis of the ODC 5′ untranslated region (5′UTR) revealed four splice variants with the presence or absence of two intronic sequences. All four 5′UTR species were found in both cell lines; however, variants containing intronic sequences were more abundant in Ras-transformed cells. All splice variants support internal ribosome entry site …

Hope Measurement In Mexican American Youth, Lisa M. Edwards, Anthony D. Ong, Shane J. Lopez
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
Hope is a motivational construct that has been associated with many positive outcomes in children, adolescents, and adults. Although research with the Children’s Hope Scale (CHS) has demonstrated support for the reliability and validity of the CHS with various samples of youth, there is little empirical evidence for its use with Latino youth. The current study examined the psychometric properties of the six-item CHS in a sample of 135 Mexican American youth. Confirmatory factor analyses provided support for a hierarchical representation of the CHS with two underlying factors (pathways and agency). CHS scores were found to be positively correlated with …

The Sensitivity Of The Southwest Monsoon Phytoplankton Bloom To Variations In Aeolian Iron Deposition Over The Arabian Sea, Jerry D. Wiggert, Raghu G. Murtugudde
CCPO Publications
[1] A coupled, 3-D biophysical ocean general circulation model is used to investigate how aeolian iron deposition affects the Arabian Sea ecosystem. Two separate aeolian iron deposition fields, derived from the GISS and GOCART atmospheric transport models, have been applied as surface boundary conditions. The model results exhibit widespread biogeochemical sensitivity to the choice of deposition field. With GOCART deposition, SW Monsoon phytoplankton blooms in the western and central Arabian Sea are enhanced and exhibit greater realism. The central Arabian Sea bloom is supported by supplemental input of horizontally advected iron from a pool that undergoes a yearlong progression that …

Few-photon multiple ionization of Ne and Ar atoms by strong vacuum ultraviolet laser pulses from the free-electron laser at Hamburg was investigated differentially with the Heidelberg reaction microscope. The light-intensity dependence of Ne2+ production reveals the dominance of nonsequential two-photon double ionization at intensities of I< 6 x 1012W/cm2 and significant contributions of three-photon ionization as I increases. Ne2+ recoil-ion-momentum distributions suggest that two electrons absorbing "instantaneously" two photons are ejected most likely into opposite hemispheres with similar energies.

Proline accumulation has been shown to correlate with tolerance to drought and salt stresses in plants. We attempt to introduce the wild-type, mutant, and fusion proBA genes derived from Bacillus subtilis into Arabidopsis thaliana under the control of a strong promoter cauliflower mosaic virus 35S (CaMV35S). The transgenic plants produced higher level of free proline than control and the overproduction of proline resulted in the increased tolerance to osmotic stress in transgenic plants. Besides, the mutation in proBA genes, which were proved to lead γ-glutamyl kinase (γ-GK) reduces sensitivity to the end-product inhibition and the fusion of proB and proA …
Metallothionein Receptor Expression In Leukocytes, Kirsten Frostad
Metallothionein Receptor Expression In Leukocytes, Kirsten Frostad
Honors Scholar Theses
Metallothionein (MT) represents a family of low molecular weight, cysteine-rich proteins that play a number of roles in cellular homeostasis. MT is synthesized as a consequence of a variety of cellular stressors, including exposure to toxic metals, increased temperature, tissue wounding, as well as inflammatory and tumorigenic agents. This protein has been found in both intracellular compartments and extracellular spaces, and its function may depend in part on its location. Extracellular MT is able to redistribute heavy metals between tissues, act as a powerful antioxidant, affect cell proliferation, and cause the suppression of T-dependent humoral immunity. The nature of the …

The breeding ecology of south temperate bird species is less widely known than that of north temperate species, yet because they comprise a large portion of the world's avian diversity, knowledge of their breeding ecology can contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the geographic diversity of avian reproductive traits and life history strategies. We provide the first detailed examination of the reproductive strategies of 18 forest passerines of subtropical, northwestern Argentina. Mean clutch sizes were smaller and egg mass was greater than for north temperate birds, but differed among species and nest types, with cavity-nesters having larger clutches than …

Corn stover has been identified as a potential feedstock for the production of fermentable sugars and thermochemical processes. The availability and efficiency of typical hay equipment for collecting corn stover has not been well quantified. Corn stover was collected for two years on a central Kentucky farm near Louisville. Six different harvesting treatments, using traditional hay equipment, were used to harvest corn stover. A rotary mower, rotary scythe (flail-type mower with windrow-forming shields), parallel bar rake, and a round baler were utilized. The average stover moisture content prior to grain harvest was above 40%, and field drying was required before …
Long-Term Unemployed Men: A Social Constructionist Exploration Of Identity Construction, Elizabeth A. Scott
Long-Term Unemployed Men: A Social Constructionist Exploration Of Identity Construction, Elizabeth A. Scott
Theses
Identity construction in long-term unemployed men over the age of thirty-five was explored using discursive psychological analysis (Wetherell, 2001). Forty participants in County Kerry, who had not engaged with statutory agencies providing employment rehabilitation services, were accessed over a three year period in order to identify the reasons for nonengagement. A grounded theory approach (Bryman, 2004) to data collection was utilised. This yielded six broad codes and eighteen categories of discursive resource drawn upon by the men in constructing identities. In explaining their continued absence from the workforce and lack of engagement with services, discourses identified by Levitas (2004) classifying …

Cephalometric Evaluation Of One-Phase And Two-Phase Treatment Alternatives In Matched Class Ii Subjects, Fredrick Jerome Burr
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
“Early” or two-phase orthodontic treatment of Class II malocclusions is a highly debated topic in the orthodontic literature. We report here on a retrospective cephalometric study of patients with Class II, division 1 malocclusions. One group consisted of 32 consecutively treated patients who received “early” treatment with a Fränkel II appliance followed by treatment with full fixed appliance. These subjects were “matched” by sex and cephalometric value, to a subject treated with standard edgewise appliances in a single phase. Matching criteria focused on the bony facial characteristics, notably ANB, NAP, Y Axis, AOBO, FMA, overjet, and overbite. The question was …

Velocity Half-Sphere Model For Multiple Scattering In A Semi-Infinite Medium, S Menon, Q Su, Rainer Grobe
Velocity Half-Sphere Model For Multiple Scattering In A Semi-Infinite Medium, S Menon, Q Su, Rainer Grobe
Faculty publications – Physics
We show how the velocity half-sphere model [S. Menon, Q. Su, and R. Grobe, Phys. Rev. E 72, 041910 (2005)] recently introduced to predict the propagation of light for an infinite turbid medium can be extended to account for the emission of multiply scattered light for a geometry with a planar boundary. A comparison with exact solutions obtained from Monte Carlo simulations suggests that this approach can improve the predictions of the usual diffusion theory for both isotropic and highly forward scattering media with reflecting interfaces.

Disturbance may cause community composition across sites to become more or less homogenous, depending on the importance of different processes involved in community assembly. In north-eastern North America and Europe local (alpha) diversity of forest plants is lower in forests growing on former agricultural fields (recent forests) than in older (ancient) forests, but little is known about the influence of land-use history on the degree of compositional differentiation among sites (beta diversity). Here we analyse data from 1446 sites in ancient and recent forests across 11 different landscapes in north-eastern North America and Europe to demonstrate decreases in beta diversity …

Changes In Student Wellness Behaviors After Enrollment In Health Advocacy Courses At Und, Shelby J. Kary
Theses and Dissertations
Peer/health advocacy programs are used in the college and university setting to promote health education for students. Carns, Carns, and Wright (1993) found 83% of colleges and universities used undergraduate students in peer education programs. According to Mellanby, Rees, and Tripp (2000), "Peer-led education may be more effective, resulting in greater positive changes in health behaviour, than adult-led interventions" (p. 543). In the spring of 2005, Dr. Alan Allery, Director of Student Health Services at the University of North Dakota (UND), envisioned implementing a peer advocacy program at UND. A review of peer/health advocacy programs at other universities revealed that …

There is a great n eed f or cu 1t urally competent nurse practitioners within the health care system H . . · owever, the literature 1s lacking regarding the utilization of services or the health-seeking behaviors of Native Americans with mental illness. There is increased morbidity and mortality afflicting racial and ethnic populations. Poor health of these populations may be attributed to poverty, lack of health care access, and cultural competence of health care providers (Geiger, 2001 ). As diversity increases within the general population, health care providers have a greater responsibility to become culturally competent to provide better …

Inevitable Forces: Deciphering The Environment, Jennifer Stoneking-Stewart
All Theses
My work is a response to my surroundings, the relationship between man and nature, and my perception of human impact on the environment. I compare the sprawl of cities that overtake the surrounding countryside to the spreading of microscopic bacteria and disease. My observation of the destruction of the environment and other uncontrollable events that perpetuate fear, such as passage of time, death, and growth, is visualized through the combination of two opposing forces: structure (controlled) and organic (uncontrolled). My use of printmaking processes parallels these concepts of control or lack of control. Lithography, intaglio, silkscreen and relief are closely …
Emotions And Crime Over The Life Course: A Neo-Meadian Perspective On Criminal Continuity And Change, Peggy C. Giordano, Ryan D. Schroeder, Stephen A. Cernkovich
Emotions And Crime Over The Life Course: A Neo-Meadian Perspective On Criminal Continuity And Change, Peggy C. Giordano, Ryan D. Schroeder, Stephen A. Cernkovich
Sociology Faculty Publications
A symbolic interactionist perspective on the emotions is presented that highlights their social character, forges links to cognitive processes, and suggests ways in which emotions influence long-term patterns of criminal involvement. This neo-Meadian perspective contrasts with theories of desistance that focus on the role of informal social controls and develops the view of an emotional self that flourishes somewhat independent of the major role transitions typically emphasized in sociological studies of the life course. The authors also explore ways in which attention to the emotional realms of experience adds to traditional treatments of the impact of adult transition events ( …
