A Study On The Impact Of Parental Structure On High School Students' Academic Performance, Erica Rell

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in the cumulative GPAs and highest combined SAT scores of students from varying backgrounds and parental structures. A total of 83 participants (36 males and 47 females) from a southern New Jersey Catholic high school were surveyed concerning their individual type of parental structure, their cumulative GPA, as well as their highest combined SAT score and individual SAT test scores. Results showed that the interaction between gender and type of parental structure did not have a significant impact on cumulative GPA, on SAT verbal scores, on SAT math scores, on …

Early Stage Detection Of Marine Oil Oxidation, Loren Lapointe May 2007

Early Stage Detection Of Marine Oil Oxidation, Loren Lapointe

Honors Theses

A method involving overnight stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) headspace gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) in negative ion chemical ionization (NICI) mode was developed to determine the presence of aldehydes (cis-4-heptenal, trans,trans-2,4-heptadienal, trans-2-octenal, cis-6-nonenal, trans-2-cis-6-nonadienal, trans-2-nonenal, and trans,trans-2,4-decadienal) in fresh and aged commercial fish oil (untreated and treated with antioxidant blends). Aldehyde standards were quantifiable to >100ppb levels using this method. Only trans,trans-2,4-heptadienal was shown to be present in the commercial fish oil and its presence was used to compare the performance of the two different antioxidant treatments in the fish oil. Includes Powerpoint.

Myosin Ii Isoforms In Smooth Muscle: Heterogeneity And Function, Thomas J. Eddinger, Daniel P. Meer May 2007

Myosin Ii Isoforms In Smooth Muscle: Heterogeneity And Function, Thomas J. Eddinger, Daniel P. Meer

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Both smooth muscle (SM) and nonmuscle class II myosin molecules are expressed in SM tissues comprising hollow organ systems. Individual SM cells may express one or more of multiple myosin II isoforms that differ in myosin heavy chain (MHC) and myosin light chain (MLC) subunits. Although much has been learned, the expression profiles, organization within contractile filaments, localization within cells, and precise roles in various contractile functions of these different myosin molecules are still not well understood. However, data supporting unique physiological roles for certain isoforms continues to build. Isoform differences located in the S1 head region of the MHC …

High-Resolution Stratigraphy At A Coastal Drillhole, Beth Wrege May 2007

High-Resolution Stratigraphy At A Coastal Drillhole, Beth Wrege

All Theses

Lithologic descriptions of continuous core interpreted in conjunction with borehole geophysical logs were used to determine thicknesses of hydrologic and geologic units at CR-622 in the coastal plain of North Carolina. Borehole geophysics was used to adjust the position of core loss within each cored interval and to supplement lithology to determine the stratigraphy of missing segments of core. Although some geophysical logs produce non-unique lithologic solutions, a complete normal stratigraphic profile may be obtained with the addition of continuous core. Curve characteristics within geophysical logs provide precise identification of transitional sequences and can be used to calibrate lithostratigraphy. The …

The Estuarine Killifish, Fundulus Heteroclitus, As A Model System For Developmental Immunotoxicology , Laura Hunt

All Dissertations

Little is known about the development of the immune system in estuarine teleosts. The aim of this study was to describe the disappearance of maternally-derived immune components of immunity and the development of the immune system in the estuarine killifish, Fundulus heteroclitus, also known as the mummichog. Maternal-derived IgM was measured by ELISA and whole body lysozyme levels were determined by both enzymatic and immunological methods. Recombination activation gene-1 (Rag-1) expression was quantified using real time quantitative PCR and organ development was monitored using histological techniques. Rag-1 was cloned from F.heteroclitus and a recombinant Rag-1 protein was expressed for the …

The Effect Of The Protein Matrix On Fluorescence And An Analysis Of The Effect Of Fusing Residues 62 And 63 In Kindling Proteins, Scott L. Maddalo

Chemistry Honors Papers

In the ground state of the highly conjugated green fluorescent protein (GFP), the chromophore should be planar. However, numerous crystal structures of GFP and GFP-like proteins have been reported with slightly twisted chromophores. We have previously shown that the protein cavity surrounding the chromophore in wild-type GFP is not complementary with a planar chromophore. This study shows that the crystal structure of wild-type GFP is not an anomaly: most of the GFP and GFP-like proteins in the protein databank have a protein matrix that is not complementary with a planar chromophore. When the π-conjugation across the ethylenic bridge of the …

Trabecular Calcium Phosphate Scaffolds For Bone Regeneration, Mark Ryan Appleford May 2007

Trabecular Calcium Phosphate Scaffolds For Bone Regeneration, Mark Ryan Appleford

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Bone tissue engineering represents a strategy for the repair or regeneration of damaged bone in the body. The science underlying this clinical therapy bridges the traditional fields of cell biology, materials science and mechanical engineering with the aim to identify how cells behave on physiologically relevant materials with natural mechanical stimuli. The objectives of this research were to develop and characterize calcium phosphate ceramic scaffolds matched to the local architecture of natural trabecular bone and to apply tissue engineering strategies for the study of cell behavior in both in vitro and in vivo models. The specific role of environment on cell …

Depth And Size Limits For The Visibility Of Veins Using The Veinviewer Imaging System, Soujanya Ganesh May 2007

Depth And Size Limits For The Visibility Of Veins Using The Veinviewer Imaging System, Soujanya Ganesh

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Administration of fluids or medication and blood draw procedures require the nurse or the phlebotomist to access the veins in patients at hospitals or phlebotomy centers. It is important to minimize the discomfort associated with sticking needles in the patient more than once and most often, necessary to find an appropriate vein within few minutes. However, problems involved in accessing veins in pediatric and obese patients make it very difficult to perform a successful stick in a short time. The VeinViewer Imaging System is an infrared imaging device that provides the nurses and phlebotomists a means for locating veins in …

Mayer V. Monroe: The Seventh Circuit Sheds Freedom Of Speech At The Classroom Door, Justin Nemunaitis May 2007

Mayer V. Monroe: The Seventh Circuit Sheds Freedom Of Speech At The Classroom Door, Justin Nemunaitis

Seventh Circuit Review

During a curriculum-specified class discussion of the war in Iraq, a sixth grader asked her teacher, Ms. Mayer, if she would ever march to protest the war. The school dismissed the teacher for answering the student. In Mayer v. Monroe County Community School Corp., the Seventh Circuit ruled that no teacher has the First Amendment right to express an opinion in the classroom. The case inappropriately applied the U.S. Supreme Court's recent Garcetti v. Ceballos decision in a way that overruled previous precedent. This Note will argue that the Seventh Circuit should have followed its earlier decisions by asking …

Good Fences And Good Neighbors? Biblical Scholars And Theologians, Jean-Pierre Ruiz May 2007

Good Fences And Good Neighbors? Biblical Scholars And Theologians, Jean-Pierre Ruiz

Journal of Hispanic / Latino Theology

The author takes occasion of the decision by the American Academic of Religion to separate its annual meetings from those of the Society for Biblical Literature, to reflect on the challenging disciplinary frontier arrayed between systematic theology and biblical studies. In particular, he calls for critical theological interpretation of the claims of biblical scholarship, bearing in mind the contextuality of all discourses. For their part, biblical scholars should call systematic theologians to operate within the framework of what Fernando Segovia has called a hermeneutics of otherness and engagement, as a preface to reading with exegetes and other academic, pastoral, professional …

Managing Smooth Bromegrass Pastures In South Dakota, Eric M. Mousel, Alexander J. Smart May 2007

Managing Smooth Bromegrass Pastures In South Dakota, Eric M. Mousel, Alexander J. Smart

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Smooth bromegrass is a cool-season grass introduced into the U.S. in the latter part of the 19th century. Because of its highly developed root system, smooth bromegrass is resistant to wide temperature extremes and extensive drought. This resistance has allowed it to become a dominant species in pastures and on native rangeland in eastern and central South Dakota. It is a leafy and sod-forming perennial that spreads aggressively through seeds and rhizomes and establishes well on deep, well-drained silt, clay loam, or sandy soils (Fig 1).

A Comparison Of Pyronin Y-Methyl Green Stain And Methylene Blue Stain For Somatic Cell Count In Sheep Milk, Emily Mirek, Stacey O’Donnell May 2007

A Comparison Of Pyronin Y-Methyl Green Stain And Methylene Blue Stain For Somatic Cell Count In Sheep Milk, Emily Mirek, Stacey O’Donnell

Senior Honors Projects

Somatic cell count is a key method used to evaluate the quality of milk in today’s growing dairy sheep industry. Somatic cells are body cells, primarily the white blood cells, found in a milk sample. If an infection such as mastitis is present, the number of somatic cells in the milk increases (Gonzalo, et al. 1992). Producers routinely perform somatic cell counts on cow and goat milk. For dairy cattle in the United States, the somatic cell count can not exceed 750,000 cells per milliliter, for commercial milk. For dairy goats the accepted limit is 1,000,000 cells per mL of …

Mechanics Of Suction Generation During Feeding In Little Skates, Danielle Duquette May 2007

Mechanics Of Suction Generation During Feeding In Little Skates, Danielle Duquette

Senior Honors Projects

Feeding mechanisms of aquatic vertebrates has been extensively studied in the past, while that of elasmobranchs remains limited. Skates and rays are believed to have evolved from a shark ancestor, thus they represent the most derived group. All skates are dorsoventrally compressed, have a unique jaw suspension type and head skeleton and live in benthic environments. It is unknown whether these derived features of skates have altered the ancestral shark feeding mechanism. Comparing feeding mechanisms in skates and sharks may shed light on morphological transformations that have arisen after the evolutionary split of these two groups. In this study prey …
