We believe that the time is ripe to present an integrated view of cetacean brains, behavior, and evolution based on the wealth of accumulated and recent data on these topics. Our conclusions support the more generally accepted view that the large brain of cetaceans evolved to support complex cognitive abilities.

Trumpeter Swan Survey Of The Rocky Mountain Population Winter 2007, James A. Dubovsky May 2007

Trumpeter Swan Survey Of The Rocky Mountain Population Winter 2007, James A. Dubovsky

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Observers counted 4,701 swans (white birds and cygnets) in the Rocky Mountain Population of trumpeter swans during January and February 2007, a decrease of 14% from the 5,484 counted during winter 2006. However, in Montana, aerial surveys were conducted only in a portion of the survey area; ground counts were conducted on remaining areas. The numbers of white birds (3,660) and cygnets (919) decreased 14% and 25%, respectively, from counts last year, although these declines are biased high due to a number of birds in Idaho not being classified as either white birds or cygnets. In the tri-state area, decreases …

Addressing The Low Returns To Education Of African Born Immigrants In The United States, Jongsung Kim, Francis Kemegue May 2007

Addressing The Low Returns To Education Of African Born Immigrants In The United States, Jongsung Kim, Francis Kemegue

Economics Faculty Working Papers

This paper uses 2000 Census 5 percent Public Use Microdata Sample to investigate the relative earning pattern of immigrants from African countries, and explores the relevance of existing explanations of the low returns to education. The study uses the Extreme Bound Analysis to check the robustness of the variables of interests. The empirical findings from the conventional earnings regression conform to the theoretical expectations. However, not all the variables of interests are robust in Extreme Bound Analysis. This suggests that conventional specifications may not encompass all necessary information. Future study may explicitly controls for more detailed country-specific characteristics of the …

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short 19- to 24-nt RNA molecules that have been shown to regulate the expression of other genes in a variety of eukaryotic systems. Abnormal expression of miRNAs has been observed in several human cancers, and furthermore, germ-line and somatic mutations in human miRNAs were recently identified in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Thus, human miRNAs can act as tumor suppressor genes or oncogenes, where mutations, deletions, or amplifications can underlie the development of certain types of leukemia. In addition, previous studies have shown that miRNA expression profiles can distinguish among human solid tumors from different organs. Because …

Pharmacokinetics Of Ultrasonically-Released, Micelle-Encapsulated Doxorubicin In The Rat Model And Its Effect On Tumor Growth, Bryant J. Staples May 2007

Pharmacokinetics Of Ultrasonically-Released, Micelle-Encapsulated Doxorubicin In The Rat Model And Its Effect On Tumor Growth, Bryant J. Staples

Theses and Dissertations

Chemotherapy is one of the most successful cancer treatments used today. Unfortunately, the amount of chemotherapy a patient can receive is limited by the associated negative side effects, such as cardiotoxicity, immune system suppression, and nephrotoxicity. Encapsulation of these drugs, Doxorubicin (DOX) in particular, in stabilized Pluronic micelles (Plurogel TM) shows success in limiting these harmful side effects. In previous studies, low-frequency ultrasound (US) has been shown, in vitro, to locally release DOX from these micelles. In this study, a novel drug delivery system involving the encapsulation of DOX in Plurogel and the release of the drug at the tumor …

Mountain Beaver: A Primitive Fossorial Rodent, Wendy M. Arjo May 2007

Mountain Beaver: A Primitive Fossorial Rodent, Wendy M. Arjo

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

As the largest mammalian order, rodents are nearly cosmopolitan in distribution, can exploit a broad spectrum of foods, and can often reach high population densities. One sole representative of the most primitive family of rodents, Aplodontidae, does not share some of these common rodent characteristics. The aplodontoid rodents in the family Aplodontidae and Mylagsulidae radiated during the Miocene from the Allomyinae family (Carraway and Verts 1993). The extinct Mylagaulidae represents the earlier radiation of these rodents who exhibited great specialization (Carraway and Verts 1993). Unlike the other members of the rodent order, mountain beavers are not prolific breeders; nor are …

Characteristics Of Manure Harvested From Beef Cattle Feedlots, William F. Kissinger, Richard K. Koelsch, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein May 2007

Characteristics Of Manure Harvested From Beef Cattle Feedlots, William F. Kissinger, Richard K. Koelsch, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Open lot cattle production systems present unique challenges for nutrient planning processes. Previous estimates of quantities and characteristics of harvested manure from this type of facility are based upon data from the early 1970s. In addition, harvested manure is impacted by weather, feeding program, season, and pen management decisions. The objectives of this study are to characterize under commercial conditions for open lot beef systems: 1) harvested manure quantities and characteristics; 2) impact of factors such as feeding program, season, and management on harvested manure; and 3) mass balance for nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). Data from six commercial feedlots …

Subterranean Rodents As Pests: The Case Of The Pocket Gopher, Gary W. Witmer, Richard M. Engeman May 2007

Subterranean Rodents As Pests: The Case Of The Pocket Gopher, Gary W. Witmer, Richard M. Engeman

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

With over 2000 species, the order Rodentia has more members than any other order of mammals (Nowak 1999). The distribution of rodents is nearly worldwide; their use of habitats is extensive and varied. Most rodent species are relatively small, secretive, prolific, and all have continuously growing incisors. Many rodent species have ecological, scientific, cultural, and/or economic importance.

A variety of economic and health problems result from rodent interactions with humans. These include damage to growing crops, trees, seeds, pastures; damage and contamination of stored foods; damage to structures and property; and disease transmission (Witmer et al. 1995a). Singleton et al. …

Dynamics Of A Minimal Model Of Interlocked Positive And Negative Feedback Loops Of Transcriptional Regulation By Camp-Response Element Binding Proteins, Hao Song, Paul Smolen, Evyatar Av-Ron, Douglas A Baxter, John H Byrne May 2007

Dynamics Of A Minimal Model Of Interlocked Positive And Negative Feedback Loops Of Transcriptional Regulation By Camp-Response Element Binding Proteins, Hao Song, Paul Smolen, Evyatar Av-Ron, Douglas A Baxter, John H Byrne

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

cAMP-response element binding (CREB) proteins are involved in transcriptional regulation in a number of cellular processes (e.g., neural plasticity and circadian rhythms). The CREB family contains activators and repressors that may interact through positive and negative feedback loops. These loops can be generated by auto- and cross-regulation of expression of CREB proteins, via CRE elements in or near their genes. Experiments suggest that such feedback loops may operate in several systems (e.g., Aplysia and rat). To understand the functional implications of such feedback loops, which are interlocked via cross-regulation of transcription, a minimal model with a positive and negative loop …

Ecological Art: Ruth Wallen And Cultural Activism, Susan Birchler May 2007

Ecological Art: Ruth Wallen And Cultural Activism, Susan Birchler

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Twentieth century modernity has provoked multiple problems ranging from environmental degradation to human rights violations. Globally, diverse communities of people have organized to promote, not just reactive reforms, but a fundamental alteration of the foundational worldview underlying these issues. Radical activists committed their work to promoting an alternative ethos based on egalitarian, democratic, and ecologically-wise concepts. An array of methodologies emerged from these endeavors. More radical political groups focused on cultural tools to engage people in the construction of an alternative worldview. Radical activists utilized two forms of cultural politics: prefigurative politics, the physical presentation of an envisioned future and …

U.S. Patent Literature Survey Of Agrobacterium-Mediated Transformation Of Sweet Potato (Ipomoea Batatas), Jon R. Cavicchi, Stanley P. Kowalski, J. Jaya Murthy, Rahul R. Vartak

Law Faculty Scholarship

A team of researchers and patent information scientists at Franklin Pierce Law Center were asked to evaluate the patent and literature landscape related to the Agrobacterium-mediated transformation in sweet potato with respect to the U.S. patents and patent applications. This report provides a patent landscape of the Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of sweet potato. The report includes the applicable methods of transformation and has also included certain patents and patent applications which claim a transformed plant by virtue of these methods. In certain cases, the claim structure covers Agrobacterium-mediated transformation technology via system and composition of matter claims and not the more …

Out Of Control – On Purpose: Doe’S Dispersal Of Radioactive Waste Into Landfills And Consumer Products, Nuclear Information And Resource Center (Nirs), Diane D'Arrigo, Mary Olson

Nuclear Information and Resource Center (NIRS)

The purpose of this project was to understand how much nuclear weapons-generated radioactive waste, material and property the Department of Energy (DOE) releases into the marketplace. We sought to identify how the radioactivity gets out, legally and practically, and to the extent possible, where it goes. Since the production of atomic power and weapons involves many of the same radioactive-waste generating facilities throughout the nuclear fuel chain, we also sought to understand the larger context in which this man-made radioactivity is managed and released into general commerce.

We reviewed DOE’s national and site-specific policies, guidance, rules and procedures which allow …
