Molecular And Functional Characterization Of Bacterial Communities In Organic Farm And Pasture Soils, Sherie L. Edenborn

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Culture-dependent denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (CD DGGE) fingerprinting of the 16S rRNA gene was developed to characterize mixed soil bacterial communities recovered on agar plates. CD DGGE analyses resulted in clear banding patterns of sufficient complexity (16--32 major bands) and reproducibility to investigate differences in bacterial communities in silt loam soils. Replicate CD DGGE profiles from plates inoculated with less-dilute samples (10 -3) had a higher band count and were more similar (72--77%) than profiles from more-dilute samples (51--61%). When CD DGGE fingerprints were compared to profiles constructed from 16S rRNA genes obtained from culture-independent clone libraries (CB DGGE profiles) …

Truth, Justice, And The American Dilemma, Robert Batey Aug 2007

Truth, Justice, And The American Dilemma, Robert Batey

San Diego Law Review

McCleskey v. Kemp is without doubt a memorable case. Professor David C. Baldus and his colleagues, Charles A. Pulaski and George Woodworth, had produced a detailed statistical study of the operation of the death penalty in Georgia showing, in the words of the Supreme Court, that "black defendants, such as McCleskey, who kill white victims have the greatest likelihood of receiving the death penalty." McCleskey used this study to challenge his capital sentence under both the Equal Protection and Cruel and Unusual Punishment Clauses. Like any statistical proof, the Baldus study had been challenged on methodological grounds. The Supreme Court …

Selection For Rapid Embryo Development Correlates With Embryo Exposure To Maternal Androgens Among Passerine Birds, Hubert Schwabl, Maria G. Palacios, Thomas E. Martin Aug 2007

Selection For Rapid Embryo Development Correlates With Embryo Exposure To Maternal Androgens Among Passerine Birds, Hubert Schwabl, Maria G. Palacios, Thomas E. Martin

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Greater offspring predation favors evolution of faster development among species. We hypothesized that greater offspring predation exerts selection on mothers to increase levels of anabolic androgens in egg yolks to achieve faster development. Here, we tested whether (1) concentrations of yolk androgens in passerine species were associated with offspring predation and (2) embryo and nestling development rates were associated with yolk androgen concentrations. We examined three androgens that increase in potency along the synthesis pathway: androstenedione (A(4)) to testosterone (T) to 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone (5 alpha-DHT). Concentrations of none of these steroids were related to clutch size; only A, was allometrically …

The purpose of this study was to examine and explain causes of body weight changes in first-semester freshmen. A mixed method design was used to conduct an experimental component, search for statistical relationships among variables, and explore and further explain the findings related to body weight changes.

The quantitative results revealed that there was no significant difference in change in body weight between the experimental and control group. Major findings in the quantitative analysis were that freshman males are gaining more weight than freshman females during their first semester in college. Drinking contributes to this weight gain. In addition, feeling …

Structural Basis Of Allosteric And Intrasteric Regulation In Human Cystathionine Β-Synthase And Its Regulation By A Cxxc Motif, Suvajit Sen Aug 2007

Structural Basis Of Allosteric And Intrasteric Regulation In Human Cystathionine Β-Synthase And Its Regulation By A Cxxc Motif, Suvajit Sen

Department of Biochemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The human cystathionine β-synthase (CBS) is a 5’ pyridoxal phosphate (PLP) dependent protein that catalyzes the condensation reaction between serine and homocysteine to yield cystathionine. This is the first step in the transsulfuration pathway which connects the methionine cycle to cysteine production. Mutations in CBS are the single most common cause of severe hereditary hyperhomocystenemia and over one hundred pathogenic mutations have been described so far. These mutations represent residues which are important for the structural and functional integrity of the enzyme. The biochemical characterization of these mutants thus leads to further insights into structure-function correlations in CBS.

CBS has …

Identification Of Psychological Stressors For Long Duration Space Missions: Psychological Stressors Among Five Astronauts And Cosmonauts, Melinda S. Marsh Aug 2007

Identification Of Psychological Stressors For Long Duration Space Missions: Psychological Stressors Among Five Astronauts And Cosmonauts, Melinda S. Marsh

Theses and Dissertations

As humans continue to experience space missions of longer and longer duration, more and more high intensity stressors are going to be experienced. Although physiological stressors have been studied, there have been few studies on the psychological stressors. Those that are present primarily focused on the polar environment as a space analogue. In order to answer the question of how stressors may affect future astronauts and cosmonauts, the evolutoinary reasons behind stress must be considered not only the type and intensity of the stressors.

Five astronauts and cosmonauts representing three space agencies were surveyed regarding their experiences with ten types …

The Relationship Of Epidural Labor Analgesia And Apgar Scores, Nikki J. Eckman Aug 2007

The Relationship Of Epidural Labor Analgesia And Apgar Scores, Nikki J. Eckman

Theses and Dissertations

Childbirth can be a very painful process. Pain that accompanies labor induces the stress response which is a very dynamic process and can cause maternal and fetal complications. Maternal responses to the stress of labor and delivery include hyperventilation, increased heart rate and increased blood pressure. These effects can adversely impact the fetus by inducing abnormal fetal heart rates and rhythms, fetal acidosis, and low placental blood flow. Epidural labor analgesia is a pain relieving modality that reduces the stress response in the laboring woman.

The purpose of this study was to discover if relationships between epidural labor analgesia and …

The Systematic Literature Review Of The Relationship Between Preoperative Anxiety And Postoperative Pain, Timothy R. Schmiedeberg Aug 2007

The Systematic Literature Review Of The Relationship Between Preoperative Anxiety And Postoperative Pain, Timothy R. Schmiedeberg

Theses and Dissertations

With all of the advancements in the medical field, patients are still having anxiety in the preoperative and pain in the postoperative setting. Anxiety and pain are known to cause a stress response that impedes the healing process of the body. However, does a relationship between preoperative anxiety and postoperative pain exist? This independent project investigated in-depth, the physiologic stress response caused by anxiety, whether or not this stress response could be linked as one of the many causes of postoperative pain, and if decreasing anxiety preoperatively could theoretically decrease the analgesic requirements of the patient postoperatively. Although it is …

In Vitro Plant Regeneration From Petiole-Derived Callus And Characterization Of Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (Issr) Markers Of Amorphophallus Hewittii Alder W. (Araceae), Douglas Charles Bertelsen Aug 2007

In Vitro Plant Regeneration From Petiole-Derived Callus And Characterization Of Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (Issr) Markers Of Amorphophallus Hewittii Alder W. (Araceae), Douglas Charles Bertelsen

Student Work

The genus Amorphophallus contains many species that are sought after by collectors. A large proportion of these species do not reproduce quickly enough to satisfy the demand. Consequently, the establishment of micropropagation methods to increase the supply is desirable. Though several protocols for tissue culture do exist, these focus on species of agricultural importance that naturally reproduce vegetatively. This research demonstrated the successful in vitro reproduction of Amorphophallus hewittii Alderw., a species that is not known to reproduce vegetatively. The protocol avoided destroying the parent plant through use of petiole material. It concluded with direct transfer of shoots to soil, …

Going Batty: Response Of Foraging Glossophagine Bats To Auditorily Perceived Predator Presence, August 2007, Hannah Kim Frank Aug 2007

Going Batty: Response Of Foraging Glossophagine Bats To Auditorily Perceived Predator Presence, August 2007, Hannah Kim Frank

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Predator presence is known to alter the foraging behavior of many species leading to decreased resource acquisition and lowered reproductive rate (Werner 1994). Previous studies have examined the effect of predator presence on the emergence of roosting bats and the effect of predator models on foraging bats (Baxter et al. 2006). Only one study, however, has examined the importance of auditory cues in alerting foraging bats to the presence of predators (in this case, owls; Baxter et al. 2006). The study concluded that bats not only avoid perceived owls but also the call of a diurnal woodpecker, leading the authors …

Effect Of Minima On The Velocity Of The Workers In Atta Cephalotes, August 2007, Nicholas J. Fabeck Aug 2007

Effect Of Minima On The Velocity Of The Workers In Atta Cephalotes, August 2007, Nicholas J. Fabeck

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The leaf-cutting ant, Atta cephalotes, creates trails of foragers which carry leaf fragments to the nest. A division of labor is created based on ant body size (Stevens 1983). The smallest members of the caste system, the minima, “hitchhike” on the leaves of workers returning to the nest. My study was performed on a large colony in Monteverde, Costa Rica to research the cost of efficiency to the colony in relation to velocity with minima travelers. I hypothesized that load size affects velocity of the worker and predicted that an increased load size will negatively influence velocity. I collected Atta …

The Effect Of Chloramphenicol On Bb88 Murine Erythroleukemia Cells, Peter K. W. Harris Aug 2007

The Effect Of Chloramphenicol On Bb88 Murine Erythroleukemia Cells, Peter K. W. Harris

Dissertations

DNA microarrays can be used to measure genome-wide transcript levels. These measurements may be useful in understanding cellular changes induced by a chemical agent. In this study, Affymetrix microarray technology has been used to study the effects of chloramphenicol, an antibiotic that inhibits bacterial and mitochondrial protein synthesis, on the transcription profile in mammalian cells. Transcript levels in BB88 murine erythroleukemia cells treated with 50 micromolar ( mu M) chloramphenicol, a concentration shown to inhibit BB88 proliferation, are measured. Using total RNA from treated cells, biotin-labeled cRNA was prepared and hybridized to Affymetrix U74Av2 microarrays. From these hybridizations, expression levels …

Public Administration Theory And Views Of The Human Person, Gerald L. Zandstra Aug 2007

Public Administration Theory And Views Of The Human Person, Gerald L. Zandstra

Dissertations

Public administrative theory, despite its reach into American life, lacks broad agreement about its field of inquiry, its underlying presuppositions, and its purpose. Theorists such as Herbert Storing, Stephen Bailey, Richard Stillman, David Hart, Vincent Ostrom, William Dunn, Bahman Fozouni, Mark Rutgers, Michael Harmon and others have observed and lamented these shortcomings. Without well-developed theory, the objectives of public administration are a moving target.

This project does not attempt to resolve this deficiency. Instead, it is intended to address a primary question pertaining to public administration's core principles: what is the nature of the human person? The line of argumentation …

Murky Waters: Courts Should Hold That The "Any-Progress-Is-Sufficient-Progress" Approach To Tmdl Development Under Section 303(D) Of The Clean Water Act Is Arbitrary And Capricious, Kelly Seaburg Aug 2007

Murky Waters: Courts Should Hold That The "Any-Progress-Is-Sufficient-Progress" Approach To Tmdl Development Under Section 303(D) Of The Clean Water Act Is Arbitrary And Capricious, Kelly Seaburg

Washington Law Review

Congress enacted the 1972 Amendments to the Clean Water Act (CWA) to combat water pollution stemming from both discrete and diffuse sources. Section 303(d) of the CWA reduces both types of pollution by requiring each state to promulgate "total maximum daily loads" (TMDLs) of pollutants for all waters that are unable to meet water quality standards. A TMDL is the maximum amount of a pollutant that can be discharged from all combined sources into a given body of water if that water is going to comply with water quality standards. Although section 303(d) required states to promulgate TMDLs by 1979, …
