Gene Transcription During Exposure To, And Recovery From, Cold And Desiccation Stress In Drosophila Melanogaster, B. J. Sinclair, A. G. Gibbs, S. (Stephen) P. Roberts

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

We Exposed Adult Male Drosophila Melanogaster to Cold, Desiccation or Starvation, and Examined Expression of Several Genes during Exposure and Recovery. Frost Was Expressed during Recovery from Cold and Was Up Regulated during Desiccation. Desiccation and Starvation (But Not Cold) Elicited Increased Expression of the Senescence-Related Gene Smp-30. Desat2 Decreased during Recovery from Desiccation, But Not in Response to Starvation or Cold. Hsp70 Expression Increased after 1 H of Recovery from Cold Exposure but Was Unchanged in Response to Desiccation or Starvation Stress, and Hsp23 Levels Did Not Respond to Any of the Stressors. We Conclude that D. Melanogaster's Responses …

Heritability Of Latent Period Estimated From Wild-Type And Selected Populations Of Puccinia Triticina, Jeffery S. Lehman, Gregory Shaner Aug 2007

Heritability Of Latent Period Estimated From Wild-Type And Selected Populations Of Puccinia Triticina, Jeffery S. Lehman, Gregory Shaner

Biology and Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

Durability of partially resistant wheat cultivars to wheat leaf rust depends on the amount of genetic variation in parasitic fitness within populations of the pathogen Puccinia triticina. To assess the durability of partial resistance, selection experiments were used to explore quantitative variation in parasitic fitness of P. triticina. Fungal populations 881-WT and 882-WT were selected for shortened latent period on partially resistant cvs. CI 13277 and Sw 72469-6 for multiple generations. Fitness components were measured for wild-type and selected fungal populations. Responses to selection and selection differentials were calculated, and broad-sense, realized heritabilities for latent period were estimated for wild-type …

The Use Of 18f-Fluoride And 18f-Fdg Pet Scans To Assess Fracture Healing In A Rat Femur Model, Jay R. Lieberman Aug 2007

The Use Of 18f-Fluoride And 18f-Fdg Pet Scans To Assess Fracture Healing In A Rat Femur Model, Jay R. Lieberman

UCHC Articles - Research

Currently available diagnostic techniques can be unreliable in the diagnosis of
delayed fracture healing in certain clinical situations, which can lead to increased complication rates and costs to the health care system. This study sought to determine the utility of positron emission tomography (PET) scanning with 18F-fluoride ion, which localizes in regions of high osteoblastic activity, and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG), an indicator of cellular glucose metabolism, in assessing bone healing in a rat femur fracture model.

Molecular Determinants Of Mg2+ And Ca2+ Permeability And Ph Sensitivity In Trpm6 And Trpm7*S, Mingjiang Li, Jianyang Du, Jianmin Jiang, William J. Ratzan, Li-Ting Su, Loren W. Runnels, Lixia Yue Aug 2007

Molecular Determinants Of Mg2+ And Ca2+ Permeability And Ph Sensitivity In Trpm6 And Trpm7*S, Mingjiang Li, Jianyang Du, Jianmin Jiang, William J. Ratzan, Li-Ting Su, Loren W. Runnels, Lixia Yue

UCHC Articles - Research

The channel kinases TRPM6 and TRPM7 have recently been discovered to play important roles in Mg2+ and Ca2+ homeostasis, which is critical to both human health and cell viability. However, the molecular basis underlying these channels’ unique Mg2+ and Ca2+ permeability and pH sensitivity remains unknown. Here we have created a series of amino acid substitutions in the putative pore of TRPM7 to evaluate the origin of the permeability of the channel and its regulation by pH. Two mutants of TRPM7, E1047Q and E1052Q, produced dramatic changes in channel properties. The I–V relations of E1052Q and …

The Effect Of Dispersal Ability In Winter And Summer Stoneflies On Their Genetic Differentiation, Alison L. Yasick, Robert A. Krebs, Julie A. Wolin Aug 2007

The Effect Of Dispersal Ability In Winter And Summer Stoneflies On Their Genetic Differentiation, Alison L. Yasick, Robert A. Krebs, Julie A. Wolin

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

1. Plecopteran species disperse less than most other aquatic insects. Within stoneflies, members of different families vary in the degree of wing morphology and season of adult emergence.

2.  Dispersal limitations were tested to determine if there were increased differences among the nearby, Chagrin and Grand River populations in north-eastern Ohio, by comparing genetic variation within the 16s rRNA region of mitochondrial DNA in two stoneflies. Allocapnia recta emerges in winter and often has rudimentary wings, and Leuctra tenuis emerges in summer with fully developed wings.

3. There was significant genetic variability between the samples of A. recta from two …

Changes In Major Element Hydrochemistry Of The Pecos River In The American Southwest Since 1935, Fasong Yuan, Seiichi Miyamoto, Shilpa Anand Aug 2007

Changes In Major Element Hydrochemistry Of The Pecos River In The American Southwest Since 1935, Fasong Yuan, Seiichi Miyamoto, Shilpa Anand

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

The Pecos River, situated in eastern New Mexico and western Texas, receives water from a drainage area of 91 000 km2. There are primarily two major water inputs, namely snowmelt from winter storms in the headwater region of the southern Rocky Mountains and runoff from warm-season monsoonal rainfall in the lower valley. The Pecos River suffers from high levels of total dissolved solids (TDS >5000 mg L−1) under normal flow conditions. This not only poses serious problems for agricultural irrigation and safe drinking water supply, but also results in a permanent loss of biodiversity. This study …

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: Stressors, Social Support, And Health Outcomes, Sharon Leder, Linda Nicholson Grinstead, Elisa Torres

Peer Reviewed Articles

The major purpose of this study was to identify predictors of grandparent caregiver health status. Additional purposes were to describe the physical and emotional health of grandparent caregivers and the perceived benefits of support group attendance. A convenience sample of 42 grandparents was recruited from support groups. Data were collected through telephone interviews. Grandparents who had higher parenting stress reported lower levels of physical, social, and mental health. Inverse correlations were present between life stress and mental health. Positive correlations were found between social support and physical health. No pattern emerged in a comparison of the health of care-giving grandparents …

Impacts Of Parents’ Divorce On Chinese Children: A Model With Academic Performance As A Mediator, Anqi Xu, Jiehai Zhang, Yan Ruth Xia Aug 2007

Impacts Of Parents’ Divorce On Chinese Children: A Model With Academic Performance As A Mediator, Anqi Xu, Jiehai Zhang, Yan Ruth Xia

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

The study examined the impact of parents’ divorce on Chinese children’s well-being. A Chinese theoretical model was tested using Structural Equation Modeling. The sample consisted of 940 Chinese children aged 6-16. The well-being of children from divorced families was compared with that of two-parent and widowed families. The results showed that children’s academic performance mediated the negative impact of divorce on children’s well-being. The societal discriminating attitude towards divorce and single-parent families had a strong negative effect on the children’s well-being. Parenting skills of the custodial parent had more influence on the children’s well-being than the marital conflicts prior to …

Common Waterhemp Growth And Fecundity As Influenced By Emergence Date And Competing Crop, E. Uscanga-Mortera, S. Clay, F. Forcella, J. Gunsolus Aug 2007

Common Waterhemp Growth And Fecundity As Influenced By Emergence Date And Competing Crop, E. Uscanga-Mortera, S. Clay, F. Forcella, J. Gunsolus

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Common waterhemp (Amarathus rudis Sauer) is a frequent weed in glyphosate-resistant (GR) crops in the midwestern USA due, in part, to the delayed emergence of its seedlings. Variable waterhemp emergence was simulated by transplanting seedlings into both corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] and bare plot areas at differing crop growth stages during two growing seasons in western Minnesota. Growth and fecundity were measured. As expected, late planted weeds produced little dry matter and few seeds, and competition from corn or soybean reduced waterhemp dry weight and fecundity by 90% compared with isolated plants. Interestingly, common …

An Ethical Analysis Of The 3 Rs, Lisa Houde, Claude Dumas Aug 2007

An Ethical Analysis Of The 3 Rs, Lisa Houde, Claude Dumas

Between the Species

Even though the 3Rs (i.e., Replacement, Reduction, Refinement) are widely accepted as ethical standards when evaluating research projects using animals as experimental subjects, the ethical status of the 3Rs still remains to be clarified. The 3Rs were not derived from any ethical theory, but they represented an attempt to increase humanity to animal experimentation and at the same time to improve validity of scientific data (Russell & Burch, 1959). The aim of the present article was to provide an ethical analysis of the 3Rs through Engelhardt's bioethics theory (1998). The analysis revealed the 3Rs fitted to some extent Engelhardt ethical …
