Deafness Mutation Mining Using Regular Expression Based Pattern Matching, Christopher M. Frenz

Publications and Research

Background: While keyword based queries of databases such as Pubmed are frequently of great utility, the ability to use regular expressions in place of a keyword can often improve the results output by such databases. Regular expressions can allow for the identification of element types that cannot be readily specified by a single keyword and can allow for different words with similar character sequences to be distinguished.

Results: A Perl based utility was developed to allow the use of regular expressions in Pubmed searches, thereby improving the accuracy of the searches.

A High Repetition Rate Time-Of-Flight Electron Energy Analyzer, Shawn A. Hilbert, Brett E. Barwick, M. Fabrikant, Cornelis J. Uiterwaal, Herman Batelaan

We demonstrate a time-of-flight electron energy analyzer that operates at an 80 MHz repetition rate. The analyzer yields an energy resolution of 40 meV for 3 eV electrons. The energy resolution limit is dominated by the detector time (or temporal) resolution. With a currently available detector with a temporal resolution of 100 ps, we predict an energy resolution of less than 1 meV for 200 meV electrons. This makes high repetition rate time-of-flight energy analyzers a promising low-technology alternative to current state-of-the-art techniques.

Proteins play a vital role in various tissue and organ activities and play a key role in cell structure and function. Humans can produce thousands of proteins, each consisting of tens or hundreds of interconnected amino acids. The sequence of amino acids determines the protein's 3D structure and conformational dynamics, which in turn affects its biological function. Understanding protein function is very important, especially for biological processes at the molecular level. Root hair tip growth provides a unique model system for the study of plant cell polarity. Transgenic plants expressing constitutively active (CA) forms of ROP (Rho-of-plants) GTPases have been shown to cause the disruption of root hair polarity likely as a result of the alteration of actin filaments (AF) and microtubules (MT) organization. Towards understanding the mechanism by which ROP controls the cytoskeletal organization during root hair tip growth, we have screened for CA-rop2 suppressors or enhancers using CA1-1, a transgenic line that expresses CA-rop2 and shows only mild disruption of tip growth. This report provides a review of Durham’s Zoning Ordinance, Subdivision Regulations, Site Plan Review Regulations, Road Construction Regulations, and proposed Stormwater Ordinance regarding 1) compliance with state and federal stormwater regulations, and 2) how well these ordinances and regulations may be expected to perform in managing stormwater. Covalent modifications of histones play crucial roles in chromatin structure and genomic stability. Recently, we reported a novel modification of histones: biotinylation of lysine residues. Here we provide evidence that K12-biotinylated histone H4 (K12Bio H4) maps specifically to both heterochromatin (alpha satellite repeats in pericentromeric regions) and transcriptionally repressed chromatin (γ-G globin and interleukin-2) in human lymphoblastoma cells. The abundance of K12Bio H4 in these regions was similar to that of K9-dimethylated histone H3, a known marker for heterochromatin. Likewise, K8-biotinylated histone H4 (K8Bio H4) mapped to heterochromatin, but the relative enrichment was smaller compared with K12Bio H4. Stimulation of …

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Five species of bats are known in the literature from Anguilla—Monophyllus plethodon, Brachyphylla cavernarum, Artibeus jamaicensis, Natalus stramineus, and Molossus molossus. These records are scattered in the literature as parts of simple reports of the species from the island or included in revisions of taxonomic groups that occur on the island, but the first comprehensive study of bats of Anguilla is presented herein.
