A Cost Effectiveness Analysis Of Preventative Mitigation Options For Wildland Urban Interface Homes Threatened By Wildfire, Keith Douglas Stockmann

Fire seasons in the western United States (US) during the years 2000-2006 have put issues surrounding structure protection from wildfires squarely in the public land management limelight with large amounts of money and firefighter exposure needed to protect residences from wildfire. No single modeling tool is currently capable of predicting wildfire ignition risk to WUI residences. This dissertation demonstrates the construction of an existing thirty-year wildfire hazard estimate at each house by pioneering a modeling system that combines results from a structure ignition assessment model (SIAM) with wildfire probability results from an ecological disturbance model (SIMPPLLE). Human apolipoprotein B mRNA editing enzyme, catalytic polypeptide-like 3 (Apobec3) antiretroviral factors cause hypermutation of proviral DNA leading to degradation or replication-incompetent HIV-1. However, HIV-1 viral infectivity factor (Vif) suppresses Apobec3 activity through the Cullin 5-Elongin B-Elongin C E3 ubiquitin ligase complex. We examined the effect of genetic polymorphisms in the CUL5 gene (encoding Cullin 5 protein) on AIDS disease progression in five HIV-1 longitudinal cohorts. A total of 12 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) spanning 93 kb in the CUL5 locus were genotyped and their haplotypes inferred. Two plasmids that were previously used with yeast, pRS41N and pRS41H, were found to confer clonNAT and hygromycin B resistance, respectively, in the filamentous fungi Neurospora crassa and Cryphonectria parasitica. These plasmids are suitable for routine cloning and for use in forcing heterokaryons and are available through the FGSC.

Phytoplankton Productivity In The Tidal Regions Of Four Chesapeake Bay (U.S.A.) Tributaries, Kneeland K. Nesius, Harold G. Marshall, Todd A. Egerton

Monthly and annual phytoplankton productivity rates of four Virginia tidal rivers were determined based on a 12-year monitoring study that included sampling stations from tidal freshwater, oligohaline, and mesohaline regions in these rivers. The mean monthly rates and range at these locations were 5.52 (Dec.) to 175.12 (Aug.) mg C m-3 h-1 for tidal freshwater, 12.21 (Jan.) to 149.90 (May) mg C m-3 h-1 in oligohaline regions, and 16.20 (Jan.) to 151.33 (May) mg C m-3 h-1 for the mesohaline. Child sexual abuse is an escalating problem involving both young males and young females. Stories of child sexual abuse and adult-child sexual relationships are on the news almost nightly. One of these most recent cases involved a young girl taken from her own bed, molested, bound, and buried alive - not by a stranger but by her next door neighbor. Perhaps attitudes about this sexual abuse case were based on individuals’ use of stereotypes. Before we can asses how individuals use stereotypes, we must get a basis for how researchers define child sexual abuse.

This project investigated the relationship between environmental sustainability and cultural beliefs in two very different American societies. In particular, we compared how citizens of contemporary Jacksonville, FL view and exploit the environment in comparison with environmental utilization of the Native Americans in Navajo Nation, which spans across the states of AZ, NM, and UT. This evaluation entailed conducting surveys of individuals in both populations, as well as an aspect of cultural immersion in which we lived amongst the Navajo for approximately three to four weeks during the summer of 2005. Diet is the only environmental variable that has been shown to slow aging. Late-onset caloric restriction results in increased longevity in female grasshoppers. To better
understand the physiological processes involved, and how rapid the responses can occur, we studied the effect of diet on total fat body protein. We tested the effects of short-term treatments on the amount of fat body protein for day 20 and day 50 of adulthood: ad libitum feeding (free access to food), starvation (only water), caloric restriction (1.5g of lettuce) and heat shocking (60 min at 48°C). Why might traumatic events during childhood, such as child abuse, be related to strong identification with more radical feminist beliefs? One explanation may lie in the changes in morphology and physiology of the brain in individuals with a history of child abuse. These changes in the limbic system specifically may influence cognition, affect, and behaviors that are consistent with radical feminist ideology.

The processes of recruitment in marine bivalves and their larvae can be caused by process that occur before, during, or after these organisms settle. The mussel species Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis form a hybrid zone located in southwest England. Individuals with hybrid genotypes settle in the M. galloprovincialis parental populations, but the hybrid zone does not appear to be expanding. Comparisons of allele and genotype frequencies of recently settled mussels from different age classes in the M. galloprovincialis population show a marked decrease in M. edulis-specific alleles and hybrid genotypes. Male mosquitoes lack the ability to transfer arboviruses to vertebrates by bite, but they may be able to amplify such virus by alternative mechanisms. One possible scheme for male-involved amplification is male infection with virus by feeding on infected Florida nectars followed by inoculation of female mosquitoes via venereal transmission. In order to determine the ability of orallyinfected male mosquitoes to transmit Sindbis virus, virus viability was measured in various nectar solutions. Virus survived under insectary conditions in nectar solutions that varied from pH 5.2 - 7.4 and osmolarity that ranged from 285 - 647 mmol/kg. Virus survived in these …

Researchers in the past have found that personal experience and formal training lead to better accuracy when predicting research outcomes in areas of psychology. Personal experience and formal training were compared in this study on the ability of students to predict research outcomes in social psychology. Students completed questionnaires that measured their social engagement (a proxy to personal experience), their academic history and status, and their knowledge of social psychological findings. Students with more psychology classes taken in college were better able to predict research outcomes (r = .24). Psychology majors knew more findings in social psychology than nonpsychology majors …

John Couey, Jessica’s neighbor, had entered their home at 1:00 AM the previous night and abducted the little girl. After sexually assaulting her, he dug a hole and buried her alive. A forty-nine-year-old homeless man, Brian Mitchell, abducted fifteen-year-old Elizabeth Smart at knifepoint from her bedroom in an affluent district of Salt Lake City. Consuming fewer calories while maintaining adequate nutrition (i.e. calorie restriction), even if that diet is started late in life, rapidly increases longevity by slowing the aging process (Mair et al. 2003). The mechanisms underlying rapidly reduced mortality rate in response to late-onset calorie restriction are largely unknown. Calorie restriction is associated with lower insulin-like peptides (ILP) levels in many organisms (Tater et al. 2003). We have shown that calorie restriction throughout adulthood, and late-onset calorie restriction, increases longevity in female grasshoppers (Wells et al. 2005; Hatle et al. 2006). Microbial enzyme activities (MEA’s) are measurements of microbial metabolism. These activities are dependent on the need for nutrients and respiration. This extended study evaluated four streams in the same watershed that had an approved fecal coliform Total Maximum Daily Load. Sediment and water samples were collected monthly for the first year of each specific stream study, and then quarterly to the end of 2006. Dehydrogenase, a measure of microbial respiration, along with acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, galactosidase and glucosidase activities were measured using colorimetric assays. Climate change is already having adverse effects on animal life, and those effects are likely to prove devastating in the future. Nonetheless, the relevant harms to animals have yet to become a serious part of the analysis of climate change policy. Even if animals and species are valued solely by reference to human preferences, inclusion of their welfare dramatically increases the argument for aggressive responses to climate change. We estimate that, even under conservative assumptions about valuation, losses to nonhuman life might run into the hundreds of billions of dollars annually. Discussions regarding the topics of attachment and loss are ubiquitous and cannot be avoided. Losing a loved one---especially a parent---to death or divorce is difficult at any age, perhaps most difficult during the age of adolescence. Depression is a common product of such loss. A study was conducted that attempted to look at the quality of attachment between the child and primary caregiver, along with the any possible parent loss, and their implications for the prevalence of depression.
