The Jacksonville Islamic Center is uncommon; its unique qualities are illustrative of the social and cultural issues that accompany a minority status in terms of both religion and nationality or ethnicity. Over the course of the past year (2005-2006), I have conducted ethnographic research within the Muslim community of Jacksonville. My research focuses primarily around the Islamic Center of Northeast Florida (ICNEF) which serves as both mosque and community center, yet my research extended into wider circles of the American Muslim experience, including a conference in Washington D.C. that dealt with issues surrounding Islamophobia and Anti-Americanism in the media hosted …

The topic under investigation is women in math-related careers and the motivating factors. Two careers, college professors and actuaries, were selected from the many math-related careers because both require advanced studies in mathematics. They also provide a contrast: one is in the business world while the other is in the world of academia. The purpose of this research is to determine if the numbers of women in upper level mathematics and these two careers are increasing. In 2005, an article in the highly influential journal Science reported that roughly 20% of human genes are patented. This figure has been widely cited and at times over-interpreted. For example, a popular science fiction author warns the public that their bodies are "owned" by someone else. A bill was introduced in Congress in 2007 that would essentially seek to ban the patenting of DNA. The bill appears motivated in part by a perception that one-fifth of our genes are owned by somebody else, that these owners can do whatever they want with these genes, and that there is "nothing …

The early 1920s found social patterns in chaos. Traditionalists, the older Victorians, worried that everything valuable was ending. Younger modernists no longer asked whether society would approve of their behavior, only whether their behavior met the approval of their intellect. Intellectual experimentation flourished. Americans danced to the sound of the Jazz Age, showed their contempt for alcoholic prohibition, debated abstract art and Freudian theories. In a response to the new social patterns set in motion by modernism, a wave of revivalism developed, becoming especially strong in the American South. For President Abraham Lincoln, things looked brighter on Friday, April 14, 1865 than they had for a long time. Five days earlier, General Robert E. Lee effectively ended the long nightmare of the Civil War by surrendering the Army of Northern Virginia, and just the previous day, the city of Washington celebrated the war's end by illuminating every one of its public building with candles. Runoff from roadways and urban areas is often contaminated with heavy metals such as zinc and copper. The use of aspen wood (Populus tremula) was investigated as a potential sorbentfor these metal contaminated runoff waters. The objective was to design an alternative runoff treatment technology based on a renewable resource, i.e. wood. Laboratory isotherms and column experiments were conducted in order to investigate the sorption and desorption of dissolved copper and zinc to and from aspen wood fibers. Sorption ofCu(II) and Zn(II) followed non-linear Freundlich isotherms. The aspen wood-water partition coefficient values revealed that Cu(II) had a greater tendency to …

Effects Of General Incidence And Polymer Joining On Nucleated Polymerization In A Model Of Prion Proliferation, Meredith L. Greer, P Van Den Driessche, Lin Wang, G. F. Webb

Two processes are incorporated into a new model for transmissible prion diseases. These are general incidence for the lengthening process of infectious polymers attaching to and converting noninfectious monomers, and the joining of two polymers to form one longer polymer. The model gives rise to a system of three ordinary differential equations, which is shown to exhibit threshold behavior dependent on the value of the parameter combination giving the basic reproduction number R0. For R00 >1, the system is locally asymptotic to a positive disease equilibrium. The effect of both general incidence and joining is to …

Probiotics are a community of nutraceuticals. Their potential in functional foods serves to promote health or to prevent diseases. Ramping up of flavor profile is an ongoing trend in modern dairy, so designer products are at the forefront towards desired health, wellness and sensorial enjoyment of everyday life. In the present work, volatile compounds of a potentially beneficial culture, Leuconostoc paramesenteroides, isolated from cheddar cheese were studied for 21 days. This study aimed to assess the protective potential of glimepiride and Nerium oleander extract on lipid profile, body growth rate, and renal function in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. The animals were divided into control and experimental groups. The experimental group was rendered diabetic by intraperitoneal injection of a single dose of 50 mg/kg body weight streptozotocin. Rats with glucose levels >200 mg/dl were subdivided into 3 sub-groups. Rats in the first sub-group remained without treatment and were considered diabetic. Planktonic Diatom (Bacillariophyta) Composition Of Lake Kaz (Pazar, Tokat), Esra Zai̇m

The composition, density, and seasonal variations of the planktonic diatoms of Lake Kaz were studied using samples taken from the surface and 1.0 m depths between May 2005 and April 2006. Some physical and chemical properties of the lake water were also determined. Planktonic algae communities were identified, with 143 belonging to Bacillariophyta. Aulocoseira granulata, Aulocoseira italica, Cocconeis placentula, Cocconeis placentula var. euglypta, Cyclotella meneghiniana, Navicula radiosa, and Synedra ulna from the Bacillariophtya were dominant. Seasonal variations in the planktonic flora were observed during that period. According to the chemical and physical analyses performed, the lake has low alkali soft …

In this study, gestures performed in the greeting and reassurance context were investigated in four groups of chimpanzees living in American and African sanctuaries. Over 85 hr of video recording at three African sanctuaries and 798 hr of video recording at an American sanctuary were analyzed for greeting and reassurance gestures. The four chimpanzee groups demonstrated various differences in both greeting and reassurance gestures. Groups differed in the proportion of time spent in each context, the gesture frequency per minute, and the gesture types used. A new series of receptors were designed and synthesized, and their interactions with anions, such as F^-, Cl^-, Br^-, I^-, CH_3COO^-, HSO_4^-, and NO_3^-, in DMSO solvent were investigated using UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. The results showed that hydrogen-bonding complexes were formed between the receptors and the tested anions, such as CH_3COO^- and F^-. It was also found that the selectivity of the receptors for anions could be efficiently tuned by changing the place of the substituent group at the N-phenyl moiety. New Diterpenoids From The Aerial Parts Of Salvia Pilifera, Ufuk Kolak

Three new diterpenoids, piliferol (2\alpha, 20-dihydroxy-12-oxo- abieta-9(11),13-dien-8,20-ether) (1), salvipiliferol (2\alpha, 10\beta -dihydroxy-12-oxo-norabieta-9(11),13-dien) (2), and piliferalactone (2\alpha ,8-dihydroxy-12-oxo-abieta-9(11),13-dien-20-oic acid-8,20-lactone) (3), together with 7 known compounds, ursolic acid, oleanolic acid, betulinic acid, \alpha -amyrin, lupeol, \beta -sitosterol, and pectolinarigenin, have been isolated from the aerial parts of an endemic Salvia species, S. pilifera. Their structures were elucidated by spectral (UV, IR, 1D-, and 2D-NMR, and HRMS) methods.

The Montana Critical Infrastructure GIS Committee, on behalf of the Montana Department of Administration, has been involved for several years in concentrated efforts to make various types of map products available to those involved in emergency management throughout the state. As a component of this process, the Committee authorized funding for a project devoted to the development of standardized map products for pre-disaster mitigation (PDM) plans during the spring of 2006, and the research was completed later that year. Recreational reading is declining. The decline starts early in elementary school and rapidly accelerates during adolescence. Adolescent literacy is impacted on many fronts, including various factors in psychological, emotional, intellectual, academic, and social development. Because social factors and emotional factors are especially relevant in the study of adolescents and their recreational reading, these elements were integrated in this quasi-experimental research.

The HIV/AIDS pandemic permeates all aspects of southern African civil society including the ability of organizations to practice conservation. The purpose of this research is to understand how management perceives HIV/AIDS influencing southern African conservation agencies workforce capacity to meet their missions. Research goals include: (1) identifying perceptions of the impacts of HIV/AIDS on workforce capacity; (2) elucidating barriers to addressing these impacts; and (3) exploring mitigation strategies. The effects of two herbivorous insects, Galerucella calmariensis Duftschmid and Myzus lythri L. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), feeding on purple loosestrife, Lythrum salicaria L. (Myrtiflorae: Lythraceae), were measured in the presence of two insect predators, Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) and Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae). A greenhouse cage experiment examined the direct effects of these predators on these herbivores, and indirect effects of predation on aboveground biomass, defoliation, number of leaves, and internode length. Eight treatment combinations with G. calmariensis, M. lythri, H. axyridis and C. carnea were applied to caged L. salicaria. The experiment ended …

This paper examines the role of protected land on population and employment growth in the eleven Western States, which is an important issue in many counties that have high levels of federally owned land. A Carlino and Mills regional adjustment model is used to examine how these land management policies affect the local population and employment opportunities. This model assumes simultaneity in population and employment, so a two-stage least squares regression is used. The empirical evidence suggests that population is attracted to land with a conservation mandate, and that this population increases employment. There is also additional evidence that employment …

Fire seasons in the western United States (US) during the years 2000-2006 have put issues surrounding structure protection from wildfires squarely in the public land management limelight with large amounts of money and firefighter exposure needed to protect residences from wildfire. No single modeling tool is currently capable of predicting wildfire ignition risk to WUI residences. This dissertation demonstrates the construction of an existing thirty-year wildfire hazard estimate at each house by pioneering a modeling system that combines results from a structure ignition assessment model (SIAM) with wildfire probability results from an ecological disturbance model (SIMPPLLE).
