Sos (Safeguard Our Survival): Understanding And Alleviating The Lethal Legacy Of Survival Threatening Child Abuse, Nancy A. Wright, Eric Wright
Sos (Safeguard Our Survival): Understanding And Alleviating The Lethal Legacy Of Survival Threatening Child Abuse, Nancy A. Wright, Eric Wright
Faculty Publications
To try to achieve the goal of fully protecting a child the first time the child is subjected to potentially survival-threatening abuse, this Article suggests the creation of a model program, called the SOS ("Save Our Survival") Program, with the hope that this model program might ultimately be adopted by child protective agencies throughout the United States. Specially trained teams, known as SOS ("Safeguard Our Survival") Teams, comprised of child protection workers, police officers, medical personnel, attorneys and social workers would staff the program. SOS Team members, who would be on call 24/7, would be notified as soon as a …
Teaching Race/Teaching Whiteness: Transforming Colorblindness To Color Insight, Margalynne J. Armstrong, Stephanie Wildman
Teaching Race/Teaching Whiteness: Transforming Colorblindness To Color Insight, Margalynne J. Armstrong, Stephanie Wildman
Faculty Publications
This Article argues that whiteness operates as the normative foundation of most discussions of race. Legal educators often overlook the role of whiteness in the law school setting and in law more generally. Identifying and understanding whiteness should be an essential component of legal education. This Article considers reasons why legal education rarely addresses this normative role played by whiteness. An incomplete understanding of the nature of white privilege and the modern move toward "colorblindness" conceal the raced nature of much law. To draw the harmful operation of colorblindness into relief, this Article proposes adopting "color insight, " which would …

The Only Americans Legally Prohibited From Knowing Who Their Birth Parents Are: A Rejection Of Privacy Rights As A Bar To Adult Adoptees' Access To Original Birth And Adoption Records, Susan Whittaker Hughes
Cleveland State Law Review
Sadly, adult adoptees in America must confront the reality that, in most states, their right to access their original birth and adoption records is a very narrow right statutorily granted only to those who can show good cause. Part II of this paper will explore the reasons why adult adoptees search for information regarding their biological origins and the history of adult adoptees' access to original birth and adoption records. Part III will give a brief overview of the concept of constitutional privacy and discuss the several categories of privacy currently recognized in American law and the relationship between privacy …
The Sudbury School And Influences Of Psychoanalytic Theory On Student-Controlled Education, Mary Peramas
The Sudbury School And Influences Of Psychoanalytic Theory On Student-Controlled Education, Mary Peramas
Essays in Education
We have come to expect high degrees of authority from administrators, teachers, parents, school boards, even government, yet only a few schools have embraced the notion of total and absolute freedom of choice for the students themselves. The history of educational reforms suggests that there are three factors within the course of traditional forms of education that have served to create a model for a school on the fringe of society which has quietly endured for nearly a century. Founded upon the same principles as A.S. Neill’s Summerhill School of England, over 80 Sudbury Schools worldwide operate upon three fundamental …
Art Education In An Age Of Teletechnology: On The Impossibility Of Portraiture, Jan Jagodzinski
Art Education In An Age Of Teletechnology: On The Impossibility Of Portraiture, Jan Jagodzinski
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Art since the Renaissance has been obsessed with the portrait and defined by it as the form of representation made even more iconic through the invention of photography where the notion of the profile became established as a sign of prosperity, prestige and power (Sekula, 1986). This enlightenment tradition of portraiture is not likely to perish at any given future date; the digitalization of the image continues to make the banal snap-shot proliferate at such an incredible rate identifying the thirst for personal representation in contemporary society. The explosion of celebrity magazines, the spread of the paparazzi, and the easy …

Teacher Motivation In Arkansas Schools, Tamekia Love Brown
Teacher Motivation In Arkansas Schools, Tamekia Love Brown
Theses and Dissertations
This study compared perceptions of teacher intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, dependent variables, among the independent variables of job type (teachers and administrators), years of experience (novice, experienced, and veteran), and gender. Teachers, N = 793, indicated their level of agreement with the motivation statements and 90 administrators indicated what they believe motivates teachers. Due to a low correlation between the dependent variables and small cell sizes for the novice administrators; researcher conducted univariate, rather than multivariate analyses, using a Bonferroni adjusted alpha of .017. Two independent t -tests compared teacher and administrator responses to the scales. Results indicated that teacher …
Off-The-Record Secure Chat Room Via Public Im Services, Jiang Bian
Off-The-Record Secure Chat Room Via Public Im Services, Jiang Bian
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis proposes a solution into the implementation of on-line chat-room environments that ensures the privacy protection of such services and provides an off-the-record feature. Instant Messaging (IM) is becoming an integral part of social as well as business life. The main concern with IM systems is that the information being transmitted is easily accessible. Some protection could be achieved with the use of a secure tunneling (i.e. VPN etc.). Nevertheless, even the use of VPN-like technologies does not provide end-to-end secrecy. Off-the-record (OTR), designed by Borisov. N et al. is a protocol which enables IM users to have private …
Sociocultural Strain Theory, Amy L. Proctor
Sociocultural Strain Theory, Amy L. Proctor
Theses and Dissertations
In reaction to criticisms of existing strain theories, Agnew (1992) developed General Strain Theory, and in doing so moved toward micro-level conceptions of strain. A return to the cultural concepts found in traditional strain theories may provide a more complete examination of delinquency/criminality, as it would incorporate the influence that culture has on rates of delinquency/criminality among certain groups in American society. This thesis adds to the knowledge base of criminological thought through the creation of a new strain theory. Sociocultural Strain Theory (SST) may provide a better explanation of delinquency/criminality, particularly among racial/ethnic minorities, by taking into consideration cultural …
Techniques For Reclaiming Mined Lands With Native Plants, Maria Elena Melnechuk
Techniques For Reclaiming Mined Lands With Native Plants, Maria Elena Melnechuk
Theses and Dissertations
In this experiment I examined the role of mycorrhizae, seeding rate, and fertilizer in promoting growth of native plants at a reclaimed mine site in central Arkansas. Permanent field plots were established to examine effects of treatments on native plant cover, nonnative plant cover, and bare ground. By the final year of data collection, 18 native species had been newly established at the experimental site. Compared to plots without mycorrhizae, plots with mycorrhizae had significantly higher native plant cover in the first sampling year only. The addition of native seed was important—plots without added seed had significantly lower native plant …

Electronic Media And The Novice-Level Esl Textbook, Jacob Selz Brown
Theses and Dissertations
The past decade had seen a re-evaluation in both foreign language, and English as a Second/Foreign Language, instruction methods due to the new technology available to aide in this instruction. While different institutions have access to different levels of technology, the adoption of basic technology for the classroom will eventually happen in the entire developed world. The purpose of this thesis is to wed the new technology available to a traditional textbook. It offers guided instruction to help a facilitator who may have never taught English as a Second/Foreign Language before, along with the actual electronic media needed to supplement …
Electrochemical Studies Of Some Furyl, Indol, Pyrrol, Hydroxynapthyl And Thienyl Derived Sulfonamides And Their Antibacterial Activities, Raja S. Machana
Electrochemical Studies Of Some Furyl, Indol, Pyrrol, Hydroxynapthyl And Thienyl Derived Sulfonamides And Their Antibacterial Activities, Raja S. Machana
Theses and Dissertations
Sulfonamides are synthetic, wide-spectrum, antibiotics that find current therapeutic applications in the treatment of urinary tract infections, nocardiosis, and toxoplasmosis. Rapid development of bacterial resistance to this class of antimicrobial agents has obligated the need for synthesis of new sulfonamide derivatives. N 1 substitution with heterocyclic moieties produced variable antibacterial efficacies and their structure activity relationships were fairly established. However, para-amino (the N of which is designated as N 4 ) sulfonamide derivatives are less commonly studied. In this research we have selected a series of para-amino sulfonamide derivatives. Since redox potentials are important in determining the physiological activity of …
Constitutional Law—First Amendment And Congress's Spending Clause Power—The Supreme Court's Supports Military Recruiters And The United States Military's Discrimination Against Homosexuals Despite Law Schools' Protests. Rumsfeld V. Forum For Academic & Institutional Rights, Inc., 126 S. Ct. 1297 (2006)., Matthew K. Brown
University of Arkansas at Little Rock Law Review
p> This note examines the forces in play leading up to the United States Supreme Court's decision in Rumsfeld v. Forum for Academic & Institutional Rights, Inc., a case in which the Court upheld a federal law conditioning the receipt of federal funding by law schools (and other institutions of higher learning) on those schools granting United States Military recruiters equal access to students, despite First Amendment claims brought by those schools. This note first explores the facts leading to the controversy that culminated in an appeal to the Supreme Court. Next, this note explores the background of the issues …

Tax And Economic Policy Responses To The Medicaid Long-Term Care Financing Crisis: A Behavioral Economics Approach, Diane Lourdes Dick
Tax And Economic Policy Responses To The Medicaid Long-Term Care Financing Crisis: A Behavioral Economics Approach, Diane Lourdes Dick
Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal
The article examines the escalating strain on Medicaid due to rising long-term care costs and an aging population, emphasizing the ineffectiveness of current policies promoting private insurance. It critiques traditional economic models for neglecting behavioral factors like emotional resistance to planning for aging and underestimating future care needs. The analysis concludes that voluntary measures, such as tax incentives and partnership programs, are insufficient and advocates for a universal compulsory program to ensure adequate preparation for long-term care, thereby reducing Medicaid reliance.

A Computational Approach To Understand Arabidopsis Thaliana And Soybean Resistance To Fusarium Solani (Fsg), Jiazheng Yuan, Mengxia Zhu, M. Javed Iqball, Jack Y. Yang, David A. Lightfoot
Computer Science Publications
In this study, we reported the analysis of Arabidopsis thaliana microarray gene expression profile of root tissues after the plant was challenged with fungal pathogen Fusarium solani f. sp. glycines (Fsg). Our microarray analysis showed that the infection caused 130 transcript abundances (TAs) to increase by more than 2 fold and 32 out of 130 TAs were increased by more than 3 fold in the root tissues. However, only nineteen ESTs were observed with a decrease in TAs by more than 2 fold and 13 of them went down more than 3 fold due to the pathogen infection. In addition, …
Comparative Fatty Acid Composition Of Eggs From White Bass Fed Live Food Or Commercial Feed, Ryan L. Lane, Christopher C. Kohler
Comparative Fatty Acid Composition Of Eggs From White Bass Fed Live Food Or Commercial Feed, Ryan L. Lane, Christopher C. Kohler
Publications
We evaluated the influence of two broodstock feeding practices on fatty acid composition and viability of eggs in white bass Morone chrysops. The two dietary groups tested were (1) white bass females fed a commercially formulated feed (crude protein, 45%; crude fat, 16%) and (2) white bass females maintained on live food (fathead minnow Pimephales promelas and golden shiners Notemigonus crysoleucas). Significant differences existed between the dietary treatments in egg fatty acid levels. Eggs of white bass fed live food contained more 11-octadecenoic acid (18:1[n-7]), α-linolenic acid (18:3[n-3]), arachidonic acid (20:4[n-6]), docosahexaenoic acid (22:6[n-3]), and total n-3 fatty …

A Framework To Assess State Support Of Certified Organic Farming, Shauna M. Bloom, Leslie Duram
Publications
Support for organic farming varies from state to state, and there have been few attempts to document what types of support currently exists. This research assesses regionally specific and relevant support available to organic farmers at the state level. This exploratory study develops a framework of ten key categories of organic agricultural support: leadership, policy, research, technical support, financial support, marketing and promotion, education and information, consumer issues, inter-agency activities, and future developments. Data from state departments of agriculture, land grant universities, extension services, and other state-level agencies provide the basis for a numerical assessment of support in each category. …
