Ceuthophilus spp. (Orthoptera: Rhaphidophoridae) in two subgenera (Ceuthophilus and Geotettix) were examined phylogenetically, morphologically, and biogeographically in order to improve our understanding of these species that carry nutrients into caves and are thus closely tied to rare and endangered troglobites in central Texas. Crickets were collected from 43 caves across central Texas, and outgroup taxa were collected in west Texas, Kentucky, Missouri, New Mexico, and Mexico. We analyzed 1263 base pairs of mitochondrial DNA from the COI and ND5 genes and complemented this data with morphometric analyses of 19 morphological characters. Phylogenetic trees from the molecular analysis allowed us to …

Potentiometric Maps For Low To High Flow Conditions, Barton Springs Segment Of The Edwards Aquifer, Central Texas Bseacd Report Of Investigations 2007-1201, Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District
KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports
ABSTRACT Potentiometric maps for the karstic Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer (Barton Springs aquifer) were constructed using data from high, below average, and low flow conditions. These synoptic potentiometric maps document varying hydrologic conditions and stresses and contain a dense set of data (n= 166 to 231) for this relatively small portion of the Edwards Aquifer (155 sq. mi.), allowing detailed examination of hydrogeologic features and phenomena. Results indicate steep gradients within the extremely dynamic aquifer system, with water-level changes from 20 to 100 feet over large portions of the area. Troughs and ridges in the potentiometric surfaces …

Land Use Policy And Practices In Karst Terrains, E. Spencer Fleury
Land Use Policy And Practices In Karst Terrains, E. Spencer Fleury
KIP Theses and Dissertations
Karst topography is the result of a specific combination of geological conditions, precipitation, biota, and temperature, and is characterized by the gradual solution of the underlying bedrock and the development of underground drainage routes for surficial runoff. Many of these karst landscapes are found in urbanized areas, where the potential for anthropogenic impact is quite high. In many instances, municipalities on karst terrains choose to mitigate these impacts by implementing ordinances that place restrictions on permissible land uses near karst landforms. This dissertation asks the quest: are the impacts of karst-related land use regulation on human/social systems significant enough to …

Conservation Of Grassland Birds In North America: Understanding Ecological Processes In Different Regions, Robert A. Askins, Felipe Chavez-Ramirez, Brenda C. Dale, Carola A. Haas, James R. Herkert, Fritz L. Knopf, Peter D. Vickery
Ornithological Monographs
Many species of birds that depend on grassland or savanna habitats have shown substantial overall population declines in North America. To understand the causes of these declines, we examined the habitat requirements of birds in six types of grassland in different regions of the continent. Open habitats were originally maintained by ecological drivers (continual and pervasive ecological processes) such as drought, grazing, and fire in tallgrass prairie, mixed-grass prairie, shortgrass prairie, desert grassland, and longleaf pine savanna. By contrast, grasslands were created by occasional disturbances (e.g., fires or beaver [Castor canadensis] activity) in much of northeastern North America. The relative …

Background: Rule violations among elite-level sports competitors and tragedies among adolescents have largely defined the issue of non-medical anabolic-androgenic steroid (NMAAS) use for the public and policy makers. However, the predominant and oft-ignored segment of the NMAAS community exists in the general population that is neither participating in competitive sports nor adolescent. A clearer profile of NMAAS users within the general population is an initial step in developing a full understanding of NMAAS use and devising appropriate policy and interventions. This survey sought to provide a more comprehensive profile of NMAAS users by accessing a large sample of user respondents …

The percolation water in the Karst of Trieste have been studied for 20 months in the Trebiciano abyss, in two points at 100 and 250 m depth, in order to detect the main physical-chemical parameters, according to the rainfalls, the outside temperature, the seasons and the hydrodynamic. Parallel to the physical-chemical research, a tracing test has been carried out, which has given the average of percolation rate. The tracing has shown that major flows of the percolating waters of the abyss are connected with the overlying dolines. Open Access See Extended description for more information.

Quantifying Soil Chemical Properties Using Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy, Robert L. Ficklin, Shane M. Foley, Robert E. Kissell Jr.
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Methodologies for determining soil chemical properties have evolved dramatically during the past century. Early geochemical analyses were conducted exclusively through the use of wet chemistry techniques that were relatively reliable but painstaking and subject to errors at various stages of analysis. Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) has emerged as a new approach for rapidly analyzing a variety of materials including soils. In this study soil samples were taken from eight study areas across the Ozark Highlands of Arkansas, and NIRS calibration models were developed to determine the accuracy of using NIRS to analyze soils compared with standard soil chemical analysis …

Although the technological community was once fairly united in its needs from the patent system, the recent debate over patent reform has made it clear that this is no longer the case. Rather, it has become increasingly difficult to believe that a one-size-fits-all approach to patent law can survive. In this brief contribution to a symposium tackling Diversity in Innovation Policy, we consider the ways in which intellectual property obligations, most notably the TRIPS Agreement, circumscribe the ability of national lawmakers to tailor patent protection to reflect the concerns of different industries. In particular, we propose that TRIPS art. 27, …

Harmonization Without Consensus: Critical Reflections On Drafting A Substantive Patent Law Treaty, Jerome H. Reichman, Rochelle C. Dreyfuss
Faculty Articles
In this Article, we contend that the World Intellectual Property Organization's proposed Substantive Patent Law Treaty (SPLT) is premature. Developing countries are struggling to adjust to the heightened standards of intellectual property protection required by the TRIPS Agreement of 1994. With TRIPS, at least, these countries obtained side payments (in the form of trade concessions) to offset the rising costs of knowledge products. A free-standing instrument, such as the SPLT, would shrink the remaining flexibilities in the TRIPS Agreement with no side payments and no concessions to the catch-up strategies of developing countries at different stages of technological advancement. In the preamble to its most recent (effective June 2006) prescription drug labeling rule, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made clear its belief that FDA approval of labeling under the act . . . preempts conflicting or contrary State law. The latest rule (effective July 2007) handed down by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) includes a sweeping preamble statement that the new federal standard preempts inconsistent state standards and requirements, whether in the form of positive enactments or court created requirements. And, if the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has its way, its new safety standard for …

Isabel Veiga, Lisa Wiklund, Christopher Membi, Scott M. Montgomery, Zul Premji, Anna Farnert, Andres Bjorkman, Billy Ngasala
Pathology, East Africa
We assessed the influence that consecutive-day blood sampling, compared with single-day blood sampling, had on polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-adjusted parasitological cure after stepwise genotyping of merozoite surface proteins 2 (msp2) and 1 (msp1) in 106 children in Tanzania who had uncomplicated falciparum malaria treated with either sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine or artemether- lumefantrine; 78 of these children developed recurrent parasitemia during the 42-day follow-up period. Initial msp2 genotyping identified 27 and 33 recrudescences by use of single- and consecutive-day sampling, respectively; in subsequent msp1 genotyping, 17 and 21 of these episodes, respectively, were still classified as recrudescences; these results indicate a similar sensitivity …
