Crime In The African-American Neighborhood, Alix Cantave Ph.D.

William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications

On March 28, 2007, the William Monroe Trotter Institute held a roundtable on crime in predominantly black neighborhoods. More than fifty individuals who represented a broad array of perspectives and experiences took part in the roundtable. Participants included religious leaders, elected officials, educators, academics, law enforcement officials, social services providers, youth workers and youths, and community activists. Justifying An Analysis Of The Ecclesiological Development Of Subsidiarity Via Civil And Common Law Jurisprudential Epistemology, William Pieratt Demond Oct 2007

Justifying An Analysis Of The Ecclesiological Development Of Subsidiarity Via Civil And Common Law Jurisprudential Epistemology, William Pieratt Demond

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This article seeks to justify an examination of subsidiarity's development within Catholicism. Due to the fact that the European Union ["EU"] codified subsidiarity via the Treaty of Maastricht, subsidiarity is now a part of EU law. Although seemingly intended to resolve questions concerning the proper allocation of powers, its codification has generated substantial debate concerning the proper meaning(s) (if any) and/or application(s) of subsidiarity within the EU. Due to the facts that 1) the EU's legal traditions are heavily influenced by both the civil and common law traditions, 2) both of these traditions advocate the use of established jurisprudential methodologies …

Prora near Sassnitz, is part of a small holiday resort, Ostseebad Binz on the Prora Wiek, one of the bays on the Island of Ruegen, north Germany. Only a few kilometres of sandy beach separate them. The one, practically uninhabited, is a ghost town that is nevertheless visited by 250,000 sightseers each year because of its historical importance; the other is a tourist paradise, swarming with people, mainly in summer.

State-Corporate Crime And The Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, Alan S. Bruce, Paul J. Becker Oct 2007

State-Corporate Crime And The Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, Alan S. Bruce, Paul J. Becker

Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications

While criminologists have for some time examined state and corporate crime as separate entities, the concept of state-corporate crime highlighting joint government and private corporate action causing criminal harm is a recent area of study with relatively few published case studies (Matthews and Kauzlarich, 2000). This paper focuses on state-corporate crime at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP) in Paducah, Kentucky, and contributes to the study of state-corporate crime in three ways: (1) it adds a new case study to a field in which there are few published accounts, (2) it assesses the utility of Kauzlarich and Kramer’s (1998) integrated …

Can The Iraqi Special Tribunal Further Reconciliation In Iraq?, Anna Triponel Oct 2007

Can The Iraqi Special Tribunal Further Reconciliation In Iraq?, Anna Triponel

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

This article aims to answer the question of whether the Iraqi Special Tribunal has the potential to reconcile the Iraqi community with its past, and if so, whether this potential has been fulfilled.

The first section looks at lessons learned from previous international criminal tribunals to assess their potential to reconcile a community with its past. In theory, international criminal law has the opportunity to impact diverse goals crucial for the reconciliation process, namely installing a sense of justice in victims, playing a deterrent effect on wrongdoers, providing a statement of the facts, acknowledging officially what happened, and providing an …

The Functions Of The Social Bond, James J. Chriss Oct 2007

The Functions Of The Social Bond, James J. Chriss

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

Travis Hirschi's control or social bonding theory argues that those persons who have strong and abiding attachments to conventional society (in the form of attachments, involvement, investment, and belief) are less likely to deviate than persons who have weak or shallow bonds. Later, Gottfredson and Hirschi moved away from the social bond as the primary factor in deviance, and toward an emphasis on self-control. In short, low self-control is associated with higher levels of deviance and criminality irrespective of the strength or weakness of one's social bonds. In this article I argue that Talcott Parsons' AGIL schema easily incorporates Hirschi's …

Reforming, Reclaiming Or Reframing Womanhood: Reflections On Advocacy For Women In Custody, Brenda V. Smith Oct 2007

Reforming, Reclaiming Or Reframing Womanhood: Reflections On Advocacy For Women In Custody, Brenda V. Smith

Project on Addressing Prison Rape - Articles

Brenda V. Smith was asked to present one of the keynote addresses for the symposium, Behind Bars: The Impact of Incarceration on Women and Their Families, sponsored by the Women's Rights Law Reporter at Rutgers University School of Law in Newark. She then wrote the introductory essay for the publication which arose from that symposium. This essay addresses why it is imperative to reclaim the discourse about women in prison and discusses how the other papers that appear in this issue aid in that project.
