Forty years ago the kindling of segregation, racism, and poverty burst into the flame of urban rioting in Detroit, Los Angeles, Newark, and other U.S. cities. The following essay is excerpted from a report by Professor Emeritus Yale Kamisar filed with the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders (the Kerner Commission) regarding the disorders that took place in Detroit July 23-28, 1967. The report provided significant material and was the subject of one article in the series of pieces on the anniversary of the disturbances that appeared las summer in The Michigan Citizen of Detroit. Elected Texas District And County Attorneys’ Perceptions Of Crime Victim Involvement In Criminal Prosecutions, John W. Stickels, Bradley Joseph Michelsen, Alex Delcarmen

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This study tested the utility of the Victim Satisfaction Model of the criminal justice system by surveying elected District and County Attorneys' perceptions of victims' involvement in the charging and plea bargaining stages of the criminal justice process. This study used a cross-section research design. Every elected District and County Attorney in Texas received self-administered questionnaires. The results of this study support the utility of the Victim Satisfaction Model of the criminal justice system, further our understanding of prosecutorial decision-making, and have important implications for the American criminal justice system.

Do Children's Advocacy Centers Improve Families’ Experiences Of Child Sexual Abuse Investigations?, Lisa M. Jones, Theodore P. Cross, Wendy A. Walsh, Monique Simone

Psychology

Abstract

Objective

The Children's Advocacy Center (CAC) model of child abuse investigation is designed to be more child and family-friendly than traditional methods, but there have been no rigorous studies of their effect on children's and caregivers’ experience. Data collected as part of the Multi-Site Evaluation of Children's Advocacy Centers were used to examine whether CACs improve caregivers’ and children's satisfaction with investigations.

Methods

Nonoffending caregiver and child satisfaction were assessed during research interviews, including the administration of a 14-item Investigation Satisfaction Scale (ISS) for caregivers. Two hundred and twenty-nine sexual abuse cases investigated through a CAC were compared to …

The Texas-Size Struggle To Implement Atkins V. Virginia, Sarah Gail Tuthill Oct 2007

The Texas-Size Struggle To Implement Atkins V. Virginia, Sarah Gail Tuthill

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This Comment will analyze the persisting area of divide that is responsible for delaying the Texas Legislature's implementation of Atkins. First, it will look at how the differing procedural approaches represent the larger political issues in the pro- and anti-death penalty debate surrounding the Texas Legislature's original pre-Atkins attempts to implement a ban on the execution of mentally retarded offenders. Additionally, it will provide a high-level overview of bills introduced since Atkins was decided, focusing on the most contentious issues that persisted from those attempts. It will also review how the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals has answered some of …
