College Of Engineering Senior Design Competition Spring 2007, University Of Nevada, Las Vegas May 2007

College Of Engineering Senior Design Competition Spring 2007, University Of Nevada, Las Vegas

Fred and Harriet Cox Senior Design Competition Projects

Part of every UNLV engineering student’s academic experience, the senior design project stimulates engineering innovation and entrepreneurship. Each student in their senior year chooses, plans, designs, and prototypes a product in this required element of the curriculum. A capstone to the student’s educational career, the senior design project encourages the student to use everything learned in the engineering program to create a practical, real world solution to an engineering challenge.

The senior design competition helps to focus the senior students in increasing the quality and potential for commercial application for their design projects. Judges from local industry evaluate the projects …

Wing Color And Mating Preferences Of Heliconius Sara, May 2007, Emily Loew May 2007

Wing Color And Mating Preferences Of Heliconius Sara, May 2007, Emily Loew

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Convergence in aposematic coloration of chemically-protected butterflies, or Müllerian Mimicry, improves advertisement of unpalatability to predators. Heliconius sara (Heliconiinae) has two races in Costa Rica, each matching a different Müllerian model, one with and the other without a yellow stripe on the bottom edge of the hindwing. Color switching in Heliconius spp. is common but may involve a conflict between natural selection for convergence to models and sexual selection for maintenance of the original color pattern. Here, I manipulate the color pattern of H. sara to determine the degree to which sexual selection constrains color pattern switching. This study was …

The Power Of Color: A Study About The Influences Of Color On The Design Of Software User Interfaces, Jana Kruckenberg May 2007

The Power Of Color: A Study About The Influences Of Color On The Design Of Software User Interfaces, Jana Kruckenberg

Theses and Dissertations

This is a study about the relationship between color choice and operating system user interface (OSUI) design. The research was used to study the role color had in the understandability, usability, and student perceptions of the OSUI. Qualitative research was performed in a classroom of an entry-level Web Page Design course. Data collection occurred through the use of surveys, interviews, and classroom observations. Literature on research strategies, color preference, color perception, graphic design, and OSUI design provided the literature review background and validity for the study.

An OSUI is defined as the characteristics of a computer operating system which can …

Body Size And Sexual Selection In Heliconius Charitonius And Heliconius Melpomene (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), May 2007, Megan Petrie May 2007

Body Size And Sexual Selection In Heliconius Charitonius And Heliconius Melpomene (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), May 2007, Megan Petrie

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The role played by body size in sexual selection was investigated in captive populations of Heliconius charitonius and Heliconius melpomene butterflies. Mean fore-wing lengths of the entire population were compared to those of individuals participating in mating and pre-mating behaviors. It was predicted that because fitness in butterflies often increases with size (Klingenberg and Spence 1997), Heliconius spp. should choose larger mates. Sexes did not differ in size for either species (H. charitonius: Males = 41.14 mm ± 2.41, n = 57; Females = 41.28 mm ± 3.40, n = 48. H. melpomene: Males = 36.29 mm ± 2.54, n …

Interactions Between Physical And Virtual Space, Carolyn Hsu May 2007

Interactions Between Physical And Virtual Space, Carolyn Hsu

Theses

Taking an in-depth look into how graphic design is used to successfully open doors to and encourage the journey through conceptual environments can provide an enhanced understanding of visual communication and visual perception in virtual spaces. This may lead to the creation of improved strategies for navigating through virtual environments, helping to create a system that will more closely reflect wayfinding and navigation in the physical world. Aspects of the study will include the visual translation of time, space, motion, and emotion through conceptual, spatial, and color considerations. Furthermore, understanding visual coding and other navigational aspects will involve the study …

The Visual Story Of Ruby Red Slippers: Costume Design In Children's Theatre, Bethany Chloe Elliott Merkling Apr 2007

The Visual Story Of Ruby Red Slippers: Costume Design In Children's Theatre, Bethany Chloe Elliott Merkling

Student Work

Clothing communities. Even our shoes are continually sending messages. Ruby red slippers conjure visions of Emerald City, Munchkins, and flying monkeys. Blue suede shoes bring to mind Elvis’s rebellious rock and roll, and Cinderella’s glass slipper is instantly equated with classic, fairy tale romance. Countless studies demonstrate that our clothing sends messages to those around us. As we look throughout history of the last 2500 years, we find that theatre is invariably used for the same purpose: to communicate with or send a message to an audience. It comes as no surprise that theatre has employed costume as a medium …

I'M Not Who I Was Then, Now: Performing Identity In Girl Cams And Blogs, Katherine Bzura Apr 2007

I'M Not Who I Was Then, Now: Performing Identity In Girl Cams And Blogs, Katherine Bzura

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The task of documenting the evolution of the self over time has been attempted by women artists throughout history. The practice of this documentation has been greatly enhanced in the last several years by the progression of new technologies for the capture of digital images, the advent of the internet as a common textual and visual communication device, and the availability of free resources to publish and disseminate the resulting constructions. Women artists now have the tools needed to document the life of the self, and to publish it immediately to an audience.

Most of the women documenting their lives …
