Status Of Automation Of Electronic Prepress Workflow, Milos Krsmanovic Aug 2007

Status Of Automation Of Electronic Prepress Workflow, Milos Krsmanovic

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Production systems in the printing industry are not yet fully automated. Unlike other industries, such as various manufacturing industries that use assembly line production systems and Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) concepts, the printing industry is still heavily based on manual input, human judgment and creativity, especially in the area of electronic prepress production. This study analyzes the workflow practices of companies of various levels of automation and suggests best practices in automating electronic prepress workflow. The researcher disseminated the research instrument consisting of a PDF file and an online questionnaire to electronic prepress supervisors at various offset lithographic printing companies. …

Perceptions Of Value: An Analysis Of New Jersey's Public And Private Four-Year Colleges And Universities To Determine If Adherence To Recognized Design Principles Increases The Perceived Value Of Their Institution, Kathryn Marie Ponzi

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine how closely four-year New Jersey colleges and universities, both public and private, adhere to general standards for home page layout and design. This study also looked to determine if adherence to proper design standards increase the perceived quality of the institution. Field experiment participants rated the home pages of six institutions chosen by the researcher in her content analysis. Using Likert-type questions, 23 students rated the home pages of the colleges and universities, yielding results supporting the initial claim: the more closely an institution adheres to certain home page design standards, the …

Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone And Receptor Distributions In The Visual Processing Regions Of Four Coral Reef Fishes, Karen P. Maruska, Timothy C. Tricas Jun 2007

Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone And Receptor Distributions In The Visual Processing Regions Of Four Coral Reef Fishes, Karen P. Maruska, Timothy C. Tricas

Faculty Publications

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) is widely distributed in the brain of fishes where it may function as a neuromodulator of sensory processing and behavior. Immunocytochemical and neuronal label experiments were conducted on species from four families of coral reef fishes (Chaetodontidae, butterflyfish; Pomacentridae, damselfish; Gobiidae, goby; and Labridae, wrasse) to assess conservation of GnRH targets in the visual processing retina and brain. In all species, GnRH-immunoreactive (-ir) axons from the terminal nerve project principally to the boundary between the inner plexiform (IPL) and inner nuclear (INL) layers of the retina, and are less prominent in the optic nerve, ganglion cell, IPL …

Effective Use Of Negative Space In Graphic Design, Dong Hyun Lee Jun 2007

Effective Use Of Negative Space In Graphic Design, Dong Hyun Lee

Theses

This thesis will investigate the potential use of effective negative space to improve the readability of text typography in graphic design. Negative space in two-dimensional design is also referred to as "white space" -- which is void of text or graphics. Negative space is more than just the background of a design. This thesis will demonstrate negative space as an element of design itself and develop a systematic approach to address negative space as it occurs in the following: margins, background, space for the eye to rest, signal that there is a break or end in the communication, variation in …

The Impact Of Variable Data Print On Usability In Design, William Wells Jun 2007

The Impact Of Variable Data Print On Usability In Design, William Wells

Theses

In a world where people see, process and remember information differently, the question arises: Is technology being used in a manner that acknowledges and addresses user differences to the fullest extent? Currently, new print technologies like Variable Data Printing (VDP) are only being used to create customized direct mailing pieces and personalized products for the purpose of marketing, sales and promotion. However, VDP introduces the ability to change data and design elements in printed documents on an individual basis, making it possible to address differences in visual and cognitive abilities, language and culture, and situational considerations. Applying this concept of …

Automated Extraction Of Fire Line Parameters From Multispectral Infrared Images, Ambrose Ononye, Anthony Vodacek, Eli Saber May 2007

Automated Extraction Of Fire Line Parameters From Multispectral Infrared Images, Ambrose Ononye, Anthony Vodacek, Eli Saber

Articles

Remotely sensed infrared images are often used to assess wildland ¯re conditions. Separately, ¯re propagation models are in use to forecast future conditions. In the Dynamic Data Driven Application System (DDDAS) concept, the ¯re propagation model will react to the image data, which should produce more accurate predictions of ¯re propagation. In this study we describe a series of image processing tools that can be used to extract ¯re propagation parameters from multispectral infrared images so that the parameters can be used to drive a ¯re propagation model built upon the DDDAS concept. The method is capable of automatically determining …

Design Education: Student And Market Expectations, Eva Brandt May 2007

Design Education: Student And Market Expectations, Eva Brandt

Nordes Conference Series

In resent years the two main design schools in Denmark (Danmarks Designskole1 and Designskolen Kolding2) undergo many changes. The overall goal for both is to obtain status as a university, and they will be evaluated in this regard in 2010. Transforming a vocational school with long handicraft traditions into a research based institution for higher education is demanding. Danmarks Designskole is in the middle of this process, many activities are initiated, both employees and students are involved, and from outside representatives from various design professions. The design process has many stakeholders with various interests and opinions. The aim it is …

Waterfront Development With Web Mediation, Andrew Morrison, Synne Skjulstad, Birger Sevaldson

Nordes Conference Series

The term ‘unreal estate’ is coined to refer to online mediations of projected and planned urban developments, especially luxury domestic residency. A related website is studied as a mediation of co-ordinated artifacts and assembled persuasion. The site is also examined as a mediating artifact through which multiple representations are co-articulated. Taking the form of a visual essay, we argue that at tention is needed to mediation in design research.

Rockwood: Joseph Shipley’S English Estate In Brandywine Hundred, Delaware, Timothy J. Mullin

SCL Faculty and Staff Publications

In the 1850s, merchant banker Joseph Shipley retired from a successful career in Liverpool, England, and returned to his birthplace, Wilmington, Delaware. Buying up nearly 400 acres of farmland in the hills and cliff surrounding Wilmington, Shipley created an English estate following all rules of the English Naturalistic style of landscape design. Designing the landscape himself, Shipley used an English architect, English gardener, and English servants to create a small piece of Victorian England in Brandywine Hundred, Delaware.

Tolerance: Challenge, Perception, And Social Stigmas Defined Through Visual Communications., Ursula Moore Bryant

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My explorations and journey through life have led me to discover a connection in my work and responsibility as a visual communicator. My objective of communicating challenge, perception, and social stigmas through informed stories of individual lives is to provoke questions and spark moments of awareness in viewers. With this supporting manuscript, I hope to inform about my motivations through time including my personal, artistic, and historical influences. I will define graphic design as a fine art through the evaluation of artistic movements. I also intend to discuss design as a language and build a case for social awareness. Evaluating …
