Cracking Silent Codes: Critical Race Theory And Education Organizing, Celina Su Oct 2007

Cracking Silent Codes: Critical Race Theory And Education Organizing, Celina Su

Publications and Research

Critical race theory (CRT) has moved beyond legal scholarship to critique the ways in which “colorblind” laws and policies perpetuate existing racial inequalities in education policy. While criticisms of CRT have focused on the pessimism and lack of remedies presented, CRT scholars have begun to address issues of praxis. Specifically, communities of color must challenge the dominant narratives of mainstream institutions with alternative visions of pedagogy and school reform, and community organizing plays an important role in helping communities of color to articulate these alternative counter-narratives. Yet, many in education organizing disagree with CRT's critique of colorblindness. Drawing on five …

Making The Case For Global Engineering: Building Foreign Language Collaborations For Designing, Implementing, And Assessing Programs , Beate I. Allert, Dianne L. Atkinson, Eckhard A. Groll, E. Dan Hirleman Oct 2007

Making The Case For Global Engineering: Building Foreign Language Collaborations For Designing, Implementing, And Assessing Programs , Beate I. Allert, Dianne L. Atkinson, Eckhard A. Groll, E. Dan Hirleman

Online Journal for Global Engineering Education

Engineering programs must prepare students for a global engineering profession. In global markets, processes as well as products can be outsourced. Highly technical engineering work may be completed by large and diverse collaborations. Engineering students need to have foundational work in languages, cultural differences, and strategies for working with diverse colleagues. Historically only about 3% to 4% of engineering students pursue study abroad opportunities. Clearly, new and innovative programs must be devised to build "global competency" in undergraduate engineers. In working toward that end, the authors suggest that interdisciplinary collaborations between departments of foreign language and schools of engineering can …

Paying Executives To Not Work -- While Most Work Til They Drop, Gil Villagran

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

It’s a great job,  if you can get it.  Colleen Wilcox,  Superintendent of the County Office of Education,  turned in her resignation after allegations of racial harassment of a Latina employee,  sexual  inappropriateness with a male employee,  and other behavior that created a hostile work environment.   However,  she will continue to collect  her half-million dollar salary for another year and a half.

Class, Gender And Generation: Mediating Factors In Dalit Identities In Kathmandu, Nepal, Sambriddhi Kharel Oct 2007

Class, Gender And Generation: Mediating Factors In Dalit Identities In Kathmandu, Nepal, Sambriddhi Kharel

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

There is a growing resistance from Dalits against the ongoing caste discrimination in the Nepali society (Dahal et al 2002; Jha 2004). In this process Dalits are both assertively deploying and redefining their “traditional” identities. Despite the constitutional ban on caste discrimination, there persists an upper caste monopoly on education, jobs, and political power. This research studies the complex and changing dynamics of Dalit identity in Nepal, within a context of growing resistance and organized social movement against caste discrimination and exclusion. More specifically, this paper examines differentiation and variation in the reproduction of Dalit identities during a period of …
