Terrorizing Bodies, Chris Gutierrez
Terrorizing Bodies, Chris Gutierrez
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
Beginning with one single body painted by Gustave Courbet in 1866 and one temple destroyed on September 11th, this paper moves to consider the far reaching impact that the War on Terror has on the entire social body. By paying attention to the unknowable status of both the events and the perpetrators of terrorism, it will be argued that the overwhelming ambiguity of terrorism and counter-terrorist activity has allowed the War on Terror to return to prior discourses of racism and homophobia to mark the corporeal otherness it hopes to confront. Here, images from Abu Ghraib prison, joke pictures forwarded …

Gender Differences In Perceived Value Of A Program To Promote Academic And Career Success For Students With Disabilities, Sheryl Burgstahler, Chuan Chang
Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities
This article reports the results of a retrospective survey of participants in an exemplary transition program for college-bound youth with disabilities. The study compared how male and female participants perceived changes in themselves in the areas of academic skills, social skills, Internet skills, levels of preparation for college and employment, levels of awareness of career options, and personal characteristics during the course of their participation; values of program components; and impact of program participation on their lives. In accordance with conventional gender stereotypes, significantly more boys indicated initial interests and/or career goals in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and …

How to best meet the needs of these learners through the study of the African American family will be the focus of this project. This project will consider, specifically, the father's momentous role in the literacy learning of the African American child. Trends in research will be identified in this paper, an overview of significant literature published on the subject of African American family literacy will be discussed, and findings that support the father's significant impact on learning in the African American family will be presented. …
Use Of Learning Styles In The Selection Of Instructional Strategies : Does Pedagogy Lead To Practice?, Roger E. Baker
Use Of Learning Styles In The Selection Of Instructional Strategies : Does Pedagogy Lead To Practice?, Roger E. Baker
Graduate Research Papers
Much has been written about the importance of learning styles in instructional design. Learning styles can be measured by the use of personality profiles such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Learning styles can also be measured by Learning Style Inventories and defined by cognitive theory such as Gardner's multiple intelligences. This literature review explores the different approaches to the study of learning styles and the practical use of learning style indicators as a tool for selecting instructional strategies.
Many challenges exist in designing instruction to the personal level including costs, time, and instructor limits. Philosophical questions on the benefits …

Marginalizing The "Other" In The Discourse Of The Bush Administration's War On Terror, Sherri H Christensen
Marginalizing The "Other" In The Discourse Of The Bush Administration's War On Terror, Sherri H Christensen
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, al Qaeda-led terrorist attacks, President George W. Bush and his administration launched a campaign against Iraq in an effort to oust its leader, Saddam Hussein, and "liberate" the Iraqi people. Despite no credible evidence of Iraqi involvement in the 9/11 attacks and the disdain of most of the global community, a majority of Americans supported the administration's desire to attack Iraq; In an effort to understand the impact of the Bush Administration's framing of the war on terror on the American public, the "Other," and the global community as a whole, this …

Evolutionary Systems Theory, Universities, And Endogenous Regional Economic Development, William M. Bowen
Evolutionary Systems Theory, Universities, And Endogenous Regional Economic Development, William M. Bowen
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Universities today are increasingly being viewed in terms of serving the purpose of economic development. This paper postulates that their chief purpose is to advance knowledge and that in doing so they effectuate regional economic growth and development through processes specified in the endogenous economic growth model. To achieve this purpose and to contribute optimally to regional economic growth and development arguably requires coherent educational policies. The central proposition is that to formulate coherent educational policies for endogenous regional economic development requires placement of a theory of the advancement of knowledge at the center of related policy deliberations. An evolutionary …
The Clep Program: An Evaluation And Assessment At A Small Private University, William Beaver, Stephen T. Paul
The Clep Program: An Evaluation And Assessment At A Small Private University, William Beaver, Stephen T. Paul
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
The Educational Testing Service (ETS) created the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) in 1965 and over the years it has become a staple of American higher education. In order to better understand the ramifications of the CLEP program, this article provides a brief history of CLEP and reexamines some of the findings of earlier research. The present study investigates new areas by addressing several research questions. For instance, what are the impacts of a student’s age, academic ability, gender, and previous learning experiences in regard to passing a CLEP exam? How much time do students spend in preparing for CLEP, …
Mixed Method Designs: A Review Of Strategies For Blending Quantitative And Qualitative Methodologies, Kathryn Pole
Mixed Method Designs: A Review Of Strategies For Blending Quantitative And Qualitative Methodologies, Kathryn Pole
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
The historical debate surrounding quantitative and qualitative research paradigms has been at times rather passionate. Arguments for and against methodologies often have centered on the philosophical differences regarding issues such as generalizability, epistemology, and authentic representation of the phenomena under research. More recently, however, considerable focus has shifted to discussion on how mixed methods research can be performed and used effectively. Generally speaking, mixed methods can be conceptualized as the use or blending of research methods from both quantitative and qualitative traditions. There exists considerable complexity in how these methods may be used together. Nevertheless, increasing numbers of researchers are …

Open-Ended Interviews, Power, And Emotional Labor, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann
Open-Ended Interviews, Power, And Emotional Labor, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann
Department of Sociology Faculty Publications
This article investigates the power dynamics of the interview process and the connected emotional labor, drawing on examples from a recent study on workplace grievances in which most data collection was through open-ended interviews. By exploring the shifts of power and the emotional labor demands in the qualitative, open-ended interview, this article emphasizes that power shifts and emotions within the interview are, themselves, important data. A greater awareness of shifts in interviewer/interviewee power and emotional labor in the interview context helps the researcher better understand the nuances of the data, provides the researcher with more information about the interviewee and …
Cross-Linguistic Analysis Of Vietnamese And English With Implications For Vietnamese Language Acquisition And Maintenance In The United States, Giang Tang
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
Two overall goals of this paper are a) to provide a linguistic basis for promoting first language maintenance of Vietnamese in a larger United States context and b) to stimulate future research in language acquisition of Vietnamese-English speakers. This paper is divided into three sections. Section 1 discusses previous studies on first language (L1) maintenance among Vietnamese Americans. Section 2 presents a cross-linguistic comparison of Vietnamese and English across speech-sound, word, and grammatical language levels. A cross-linguistic analysis may help educators better understand speaking patterns of Vietnamese American students. Based on this cross-linguistic comparison, Section 3 presents potential bi-directional interactions …
Distanciation And The Recontextualization Of Space: Finding One’S Way In A Small Western Community, Lisa Gabbert
Distanciation And The Recontextualization Of Space: Finding One’S Way In A Small Western Community, Lisa Gabbert
English Faculty Publications
In the 1990s, the city of McCall, Idaho, and the surrounding region implemented the Rural Addressing System. The system assigned a name to every street and a number to every house and erected visible signage for both. Although a seemingly minor bureaucratic operation, the Rural Addressing System is a concrete example of Anthony Giddens's concept of space distanciation, and as such, it is a significant component of modernity and globalization. By investigating the impact of the Rural Addressing System on this region—particularly on the ways in which people give directions and think about space there—this article sheds light on how …

Working Towards Restorative Justice In Ethiopia: Integrating Traditional Conflict Resolution Systems With The Formal Legal System, Julie Macfarlane
Working Towards Restorative Justice In Ethiopia: Integrating Traditional Conflict Resolution Systems With The Formal Legal System, Julie Macfarlane
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
This paper considers how the multiple realities of dispute resolution in any environment affect the work of conflict resolution practitioners. Conflict resolution practitioners are almost always invited in by representatives of the formal legal system, and their work generally focuses on managing - and perhaps reforming - this system. In practice, they cannot ignore the existence of parallel informal systems of conflict resolution that may undermine or distract from the formal state system. These may include structured alternatives to law, such as religious tribunals or community mediation programs. There may be other, more informal but equally significant family or community-based …
News Media As Mediators, Carol Pauli
News Media As Mediators, Carol Pauli
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
This paper explores journalism as a potential method of conflict resolution. Part I compares the norms and practices of journalism to those of facilitative mediation. Part II draws additional parallels between some aspects of journalism and two other forms of dispute resolution: transformative mediation and adjudication. Part III suggests some areas for encouragement and some areas for caution as peace journalists import conflict resolution techniques into news reporting and writing.
Strike Three - You're Out! Revamping The New York State Taylor Law In Response To Three Transport Workers' Strikes, Erin Audra Russ
Strike Three - You're Out! Revamping The New York State Taylor Law In Response To Three Transport Workers' Strikes, Erin Audra Russ
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
For almost three days in late December 2005, millions of New York City commuters braved frigid temperatures as they trekked to work. Armed with their iPods and winter coats appropriate for an arctic expedition, the public walked, rode their bikes, and scooted on Segways to get where they needed to go. Some New Yorkers even did the unthinkable-they shared cabs and cars with complete strangers. These commuters did not abandon their usual overcrowded, rickety bus or subway to enjoy a very blistery winter wonderland just days before Christmas. They changed their routine because they had no choice: The Transit Workers …

Essential Understandings: Exploring My Personal Relationship With The Multiple Intelligences Through Art, Jeffrey Wardlaw Brown
Essential Understandings: Exploring My Personal Relationship With The Multiple Intelligences Through Art, Jeffrey Wardlaw Brown
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The theory of Multiple Intelligences holds that there are an array of different kinds of intelligences in human beings. Howard Gardner has identified 8 multiple intelligences: Verbal/Linguistic, Logical/Mathematical, Spatial, Bodily/Kinesthetic, Musical, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, and Naturalist. This project was designed to explore the practical applications of the theory through personal experience. A series of five artworks were produced using the artistic mediums of oil and acrylic paints, clay, natural found objects, songwriting and musical performance. The artworks served as external documentation of the inner processes through which the eight intelligences were manifested. A public lecture was held describing the artworks and …
Cause Specific Mortality Of Desert Bighorn Sheep Lambs In The Fra Cristobal Mountains, New Mexico, Usa, Zachary David Parsons
Cause Specific Mortality Of Desert Bighorn Sheep Lambs In The Fra Cristobal Mountains, New Mexico, Usa, Zachary David Parsons
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Desert bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis mexicana) are an endangered species in New Mexico. Many of the small, isolated populations of desert bighorn are declining, and factors affecting their growth rates include low lamb recruitment and high mortality of adults due to cougar predation. No one has previously reported cause-specific mortality rates for desert bighorn lambs. My objectives were to determine the causes, extent, and timing of lamb mortality in the Fra Cristobal Mountains, New Mexico, USA. I tested 3 capture techniques during 2001 and 2002: approaching lambs on foot and restraining them by hand; jumping from a helicopter and restraining …

The Missing Monitor In Corporate Governance:The Directors’& Officers’ Liability Insurer, Tom Baker, Sean J. Griffith
The Missing Monitor In Corporate Governance:The Directors’& Officers’ Liability Insurer, Tom Baker, Sean J. Griffith
Faculty Scholarship
This article reports the results of empirical research on the monitoring role of directors’ and officers’ liability insurance (D&O insurance) companies in American corporate governance. Economic theory provides three reasons to expect D&O insurers to serve as corporate governance monitors: first, monitoring provides insurers with a way to manage moral hazard; second, monitoring provides benefits to shareholders who might not otherwise need the risk distribution that D&O insurance provides; and third, the “bonding” provided by risk distribution gives insurers a comparative advantage in monitoring. Nevertheless, we find that D&O insurers neither monitor corporate governance during the life of the insurance …
Predicting Corporate Governance Risk: Evidence From The Directors' & Officers' Liability Insurance Market, Tom Baker, Sean J. Griffith
Predicting Corporate Governance Risk: Evidence From The Directors' & Officers' Liability Insurance Market, Tom Baker, Sean J. Griffith
Faculty Scholarship
This Article examines how liability insurers transmit and transform the content of corporate and securities law. Directors' & Officers' (D&O) liability insurers are the financiers of shareholder litigation in the American legal system, paying on behalf of the corporation and its directors and officers when shareholders sue. The ability of the law to deter corporate actors thus depends upon the insurance intermediary. How, then, do insurers transmit and transform the content of corporate and securities law in underwriting D& 0 coverage? In this Article, we report the results of an empirical study of the D&O underwriting process. Drawing upon in-depth interviews …
